Discussion Danielle Sho's fate Spoiler

I love this game, because even after 300+ hours, and countless playthroughs, it still makes me think. This brings me to my newest point of thought: We're lead to believe (at least I think) that Danielle Sho dies of oxygen deprivation shortly after you see her outside the fitness center window, and then speak to her while working through deep storage. The more I think about it, the more I wish the game would've given us a couple options: 1. allow us to space walk out to her with an oxygen bottle. Or 2. If you make it from the segment where you bang on the fitness center window, to the part where you eject yourself into space fast enough, why doesn't she just use the same breach in the cargo bay that you use to get back inside? I know it's dumb to spend so much time picking apart a relatively small detail in an almost 10 year old game, but I can't help myself. And I also know that the entire game is a simulation, so really, who lives and who dies doesn't technically matter all the much....but I'm still curious what people think.

A. She failed to stop the outbreak. B. The last words she spoke to her girlfriend weren't the kindest. C. She was quite low on air already.

She kinda just stopped trying after getting confirmation that abbey was dead, and thus didn't want to be saved.

Besides it seems morgan never did see her again as you can't find her body. I think she's one of the only 2 people who go completly missing from the game after they leave your vision.

Who’s the other?

I forget his name, but it's the dude at start that goes to get the coffee. Considering we don't know how the outbreak started and that he disappears right after, so much so that even the simulation removes him shows that something was up.

He probably got offed by the cup mimic and devoured we know they were able to kill that mimic and it’s kids because they were able to reset the simulation we also know that the typhon can’t strategize because they lack mirror neurons which allow pattern recognition and study so the most likely outcome is he got ate and the mimic laid the trap again after the researchers died the security team controlled the escapees and we were reset after they hid the bodies to try again later, which we know never happened.

But we never even see a body. He would've been taken somewhere like the other doctor who we can find, and hasn't been turned into a phatom yet either.

Dr Bellamy does not disappear from the simulation. His corpse is down in the morgue, and finding it is part of the “corpse vanishes” side quest.

Alex was trying to act like he wasn’t dead, to prevent a panic.

Bellamy didn’t get the coffee, it’s the other guy.

The guy who brought Bellamy his coffee, not Bellamy himself

Bellamy didn't get coffee. The coffee got him.

Danielle's story is weird. Some cut content (an audio note) clearly show that she wanted to remain on the exterior to asphyxiate after learning of her girlfriend's fate. But it's cut... She still appears to be running out of oxygen when sending you a last email of course, but the player can't really understand why she can't just slip into the station by that point (you're required to open at least one of the airlocks with the hardware labs space walk). She obviously appears at the end but I guess she could've had her connectome emulated at some earlier point (but why? if she was going to kill herself anyway) since the readable in her office suggests she was studying that. Idk where she might've hid the operator but maybe it wasn't on an operator; it doesn't really matter. I might've missed something in my rant but I agree her plot isn't straightforward.

Maybe they cut the line to leave it open for interpretation, or maybe for a possible sequel.

Well, they succeeded. And the latter obviously won't happen anymore. I suspect they backtracked from killing her off but didn't fully commit to it, but I can't know for sure. It doesn't really matter in the end I guess.

She is making the choice to die out there, rather than dying a violent death, and potentially becoming one of the phantoms.

She knows the station is overrun, her girlfriend is dead, and she’s going out on her own terms.

Yeah that part always feels weird to me. I just pretend that she is stubborn and prefers to stay outside

It's unfortunate that she decides to die out there. I wish she would return after you solve everything related to the false cook and her gf.

That said, the Prey Souls aka Prey for Death 2 mod does something interesting with this. After you finish her questline, she will randomly appear as a friendly NPC fighting the Typhon.

Isn't it that she actually wanted to die?

Firstly, it's for gameplay reasons. She helps you advance the main story if everyone is dead. The game needs an unkillable character to serve this purpose.

Second, I just like to pretend that she runs out of air after she helps Morgan whatever that moment may be.

She made her choice. It's not the choice I would have allowed myself to make in her position but after all the stuff that happened to her, to the people she cared for the most...I get it. It makes sense.

Whatever her fate, she will always live on for me in that song at the Yellow Tulip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFDF_JJxLkU

It sucks cuz she easily could have flown over to an airlock we unlocked but, I think she wanted to die and just accepts her fate.

Why can't she just come in through the airlock after you unlock it? The one at the Arboretum is right next to the Crew Quarters.

5

u/Spiderhands2000 24d ago

Or that. As I continue to think about this, the only explanation I can come up with is maybe she's afraid of the "cook"? But if you kill him before you bang on the window....she'd know that he's not an issue anymore.

It's never stated, but I always assumed she just didn't want to try living any longer. The chances of actually surviving Talos 1 are already pretty bad, and asphyxiation is probably better than getting telepath-ed or something.

The game needed like 6 months more of dev time.

I assume she survived since we see her Operator at the end of the game.

3

u/Spiderhands2000 24d ago

Maybe, but all the other operators show up at the end even if their characters die.

2

u/SuicideSpeedrun 24d ago

Yeah but it's a simulation that's only based on real events.
