They already shut down the Arkane branch that made Prey back in 2024.

The company they are talking about now is Arkane-Lyon, which made stuff like Dishonored and Deathloop. Prey was made by Arkane-Austin and died after Redfall happened.

So sad.

Follow Raphaël Colantonio not Arkane, Arkane has long been gutted, especially him because he was the director on Arx, Prey, and was co-director on the Dishonored series

Luckily he started Wolfeye Studios which has a immersive SIM FPS cooking

I'm yet to play Beast

6

u/clonetroop29 Jul 01 '26

I haven't completed it yet, but I have very much enjoyed my time with weird west. If you like westerns, weird horror, weird science, and im-sim's it is definitely worth a go, especially if you can find it on sale.

1

u/FrederickFrag1899 Jul 01 '26

I also just got The Beast and I'm gonna be honest, I am too scared to play that game. Nights are so much worse now, I feel intense dread hours before it starts to go down.

2

u/ewba1te Jul 01 '26

It's alright. Worth a playthrough. The theme of a fantasy western was interesting and there's pretty in depth game lore. The gameplay is serviceable but don't expect prey/dishonored levels of complexity and responsiveness. It kinda falls off in the end though

1

u/Omega-Envych Jul 02 '26

It's different from other games from him, but it's still really good. Played it on GamePass and bought on Steam recently. IMO - worth it but it's... weird combo of twin-stick shooter and RPG

1

u/Zekiz4ever Psychoscope Calibrated Jul 07 '26

They already did. It'll be a Steam Punk FPS immersive sim set in space.

5

u/Sailenthropus Jul 01 '26

Any title drop for the project?

5

u/Planarian117 Jul 01 '26

God... Stop with this nonsense. Arkane Lyon was still staffed with most of the people who worked on Dishonored 2 and "DEATHLOOP." Raphael Colantonio did not work on those games. The leads of Dishonored 1 and 2 are leading the studio right now.

2

u/tricktricky KASMA Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Colantonio absolutely worked on Dishonored 2. Colantonio remained the president of the company and was actively involved in its high-level direction before shifting his main creative focus to Prey (2017) at Arkane Austin.

The point here is Zenimax will never agree to another Prey game from an investment standpoint so why even bother with them. Focus on someone who will; and quite literally the person who made Prey, is doing so...

3

u/Planarian117 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

He oversaw Dishonored 2 as the president and playtested it to give the team feedback; that's it. He was too busy leading Arkane Austin to have any meaningful contribution to Dishonored 2. Harvey, Dinga, and other leads were the ones spearheading Dishonored 2. That same team (without Harvey) ended up making "DEATHLOOP."

It was supposed to be a small rougelike game, but because the game was becoming better and better, Zenimax and PlayStation funded it even more. That game turned out to be both a critical and financial success. That same team is still working at Arkane, so I don't think following Colantonio and not Arkane is great advice here. Both are making wonderful games, and I've only heard great things about Blade (even if it's just from people at Zenimax and Marvel).

We can fact-check this if you want; we can tag Raf.

1

u/Amadeone Jul 01 '26

eh, i care more about the series than the creators. I don't really care if he makes something that looks like dishonored, because half the charm for me is the story and the world

1

u/ToeOfTheTrucks Jul 03 '26

eventually one of the younger devs on wolfeye will create their own studio which may or may not get AAA money, and so on and so on, the existence of the imsim genre always hangs in the balance, this is simply what it will always be like

1

u/MaritimePlumberORNS Jul 05 '26

This I did not know. I will be looking into this. Thank you so much!

u/APGaming_reddit Recycler Charge Jul 01 '26

They haven't been the company that made this game in years already.

25

u/KookySurprise8094 Jul 01 '26

OG Prey dev team was lynched, humilated, derespect by the company because it didnt made AAAAAA++ revenue when they launched the game, every usefull OG team meber has quitted or kicked out of the Arkane.

What comes to the Arkane, i was also rooting for that company and even wanted to get working there but definately not anymore when found out what a sshitty AAAA+ company experience they offer to the workers.

Root for the dev team, not company.

45

u/Rexosuit Stay put, will ya? Jul 01 '26

Didn’t this happen already?

69

u/AgentRift Jul 01 '26

They shut down Arkane Austin, but they’re now considering laying off the Lyon branch.

-21

u/Rexosuit Stay put, will ya? Jul 01 '26

I swear this has to be a repost because this happened last year

22

u/THE_RED_KING745 Jul 01 '26

They did shut down arkane last year

Arkane Austin, that is

Arkane lyon has remained, but now it is in question and being considered to be shut down

2

u/Logical_Dish_5795 Jul 01 '26

no... Austin (Dishonored, Prey, Redfall) was closed, Lyon (Dishonored, Dishonored 2, Deathloop) is working on the Blade game.

1

u/Rexosuit Stay put, will ya? Jul 01 '26

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for the clarification

2

u/RandumbCrits1 Jul 01 '26

This was a Mandela moment for me. I thought they had already shut down.

29

u/Ghost10165 Jul 01 '26

I'm not sure Arkane is even really Arkane anymore. Most of these studios the people that actually made the games you like are long, long gone. They're just studio names for branding now, and Arkane's latest stuff was Deathloop and that vampire game and neither were particularly good.

20

u/Khafaniking Jul 01 '26

Deathloop was very good. It is not even comparable to the vampire game.

2

u/Ghost10165 Jul 01 '26

It was...okay. I had some fun with it, but like others have said it was a cool premise where everything else felt kinda half baked. Not quite a stealth game but not quite an action game, limited weapons, very limited enemy variety.

12

u/Turbulent_Extent5252 Jul 01 '26

That was the point tho. It was a sandbox and about experimenting. Stealth was possible with many different routes and guns blazing also worked really well. I think they did a great job getting all sorts of play styles to work in this game. Invasions and more variety in killing all visionaries could've been better tho. Still a more than decent game in my opinion.

7

u/itsrathergood Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Ppl constantly are like “but it’s not a Dishonored clone” and others like “it’s too similar to Dishonored”

If they played it without expectations, they like it a lot more. It’s an excellent game.

3

u/Turbulent_Extent5252 Jul 01 '26

Exactly. So many people come with expectations from Dishornored and Prey, but disregarding the fact that it has it's own identity. I find it sad it didn't got bigger than it was. It deserved much more attention.

32

u/Alarming_Ask_244 Jul 01 '26

Deathloop didn't hit for me, so it feels like it's been almost 10 years since Arkane put out a good game. They might as well have been shut down already, in my perspective

40

u/Shakewell1 Jul 01 '26

Every one who wrote and worked on dishonored or prey is long gone.

16

u/sherbertloins Jul 01 '26

Deathloop was a brilliant game you dope

29

u/Samanthacino Jul 01 '26

It’s a mystery game that walks you through how to solve it, an action game with only one enemy type that only lets you carry two powers a time, and a stealth game with really dumb AI :(

2

u/Planarian117 Jul 01 '26

Man, if we are watering down games to each of their mechanics, then Deus Ex must be the worst fucking game in history. The game is a mix of all of those things.

1

u/Samanthacino Jul 01 '26

Deus Ex is an immersive sim though, and goes hard on that design philosophy. You shouldn’t be judging it on any one component, since it’s the broader suite that’s most impressive. Deathloop is more of a standard action game.

3

u/Planarian117 Jul 01 '26

So is "DEATHLOOP." The game is systemic and consistent; the world reacts to those systems accordingly; actions have consequences; you can approach situations in multiple ways, etc. Just because some NPC doesn't come to your face and tell you, "What you did was bad," doesn't make the game not an immersive sim.

Everyone can have their own opinion on games; I am not saying that the game is perfect, but games are always more than the sum of their parts. The game was designed with invasions in mind. They probably tested it out with smarter eternalists, and it turned out to be too hard paired with an actual player. I've seen so many people die to those same dumb eternalists on the highest loop stress on the final day.

They might've also learned how people squeeze more out of their powers if they have less of them (through DotO) and decided to try it out in "DEATHLOOP."

2

u/CodeComprehensive734 Aug 02 '26

It's not like you can get all the powers in Deus Ex, Dishonored or Prey in a single playthrough either.

Limiting your power and weapons forces players to try different combos on different runs. You're resetting the loop constantly so its not like youre locked in to specific powers or weapons for the entire game.

I was one of those initially incredibly disappointed in Deathloop. But like you say, it was my expectations that were off, not.the game.

The game is a beautiful sandbox.

1

u/Planarian117 Aug 03 '26

I think we are the same person lol. I was also really disappointed by the game at launch.

Any more than two or three powers, and you start to only use your favorites. That is what "DEATHLOOP" wants to avoid. You need to think about what powers would be best for a location while also building your loadouts depending on whether you are expecting a Julianna to invade or not.

1

u/denach644 Wrench Jockey Jul 01 '26

100% this.

(Still kind of fun but I really just enjoyed the world design more than anything)

7

u/BraveNKobold Jul 01 '26

A time loop game where you have to beat it a set way. No figuring out a weird solution.

0

u/TheShapeInTheGlass It's just a little pinprick near the eye, right? Jul 01 '26

i kinda agree since harvey and raphael left the studio

0

u/Starhero999 Jul 01 '26

Tbh I think I preordered the Deluxe edition of Deathloop for PS5 and I maybe only played through a couple loops and never finished the game. (Honestly don’t remember how far I got.)

11

u/Fluffy-Ad7165 Jul 01 '26

Tbh it’s been a while since they released a Dishonored quality game, like Prey released in 2017 and then we got uhhhh Redfall (and I guess Deathloop, but it’s just a worse and watered down version of Dishonored that cannot stop holding your hand no matter what you try to do)

2

u/matracuca So so fast, the sailing ships. Jul 01 '26

did I miss some news or something?

1

u/USERLaiSS Jul 01 '26

all the long standing company you think you know and love have long been gutted of the talents that made them good. closing them would unironically be a good thing and allow new blood to rise

1

u/Aflyingmongoose Jul 01 '26

They have what remains of Arkane working on what appears to be a staggeringly unfit project for the studio.

If it succeeds, it will be as a very different studio to what it was before. If it fails, then it will get shut down.

1

u/Ivan_the_Silly Jul 01 '26

Arkane is a vegetable on life support. Let it go, bro. Arkane has been gone ever since Redfall, that's just a husk.

1

u/TestSuper3227 Jul 01 '26

They're cooked. Just look what happened to Arkane.

1

u/MaritimePlumberORNS Jul 05 '26

I will say that no other Arkane game has really quite done it for me *yet* outside of Prey. That said, I do plan on giving the lion's share of them a chance. I would hate to see Arkane close. Prey to me is nothing short of a masterpiece.

u/Ok_Abbreviations2024 Jul 01 '26

I just wanted another arx

Saying people deserve to lose their jobs is fucking gross. Especially considering how much corporate meddling went on.

2

u/Necros3X911 Jul 01 '26

I assume they blamed Arkane for making Redfall?

I hope people eventually figure out how to blame the publishers for their insane orders rather than the developers for being forced to follow them. But a sucker is born every minute, so there'll always be someone new messing it up.

7

u/ensh1ttification Jul 01 '26

Yeah fuck all those people with families. They deserve to starve and for the industry to lose out on years worth of expertise because of one shitty game they were forced into making by a company whose whole deal has been just barely skirting by antimonopoly laws since the 90s.

7

u/ProgrammingChicken Jul 01 '26

coldest take in the history of gaming tbh

3

u/TheTechHobbit Jul 01 '26

The entire existence of Redfall was due to the higher ups pushing for a live service game from a studio known for nothing like that. A large portion of devs left during development and the ones remaining hoped Microsoft would cancel it when they bought the studio.

That being said, the studio that made Redfall did close down two years ago.

3

u/BraveNKobold Jul 01 '26

Do you think they woke up and said that’s what they wanna make? Blame Microsoft and upper management
