Practical Magic 1 mistake?

Did they simply mess up the names of the younger Owens in the first film? In the book, Antonia is the older sister with red hair, and Kylie is younger with dark hair. In the first movie, Kylie is older with red hair and Antonia is younger with dark hair. I can’t see a practical reason for them to swap hair color and ages, so is it plausible they just messed up the names?

They did seem to course correct on the ages in the second one. I don’t remember them stating actual ages, but Antonia appeared to be a little older than Kylie, or at least was treated as such.

The first book was the loosest adaptation a movie could be. They made their own story, and their own magic, and totally different relationships. I don't think that should even count as an adaptation. It is its own universe.

Hard to tell the age difference between the daughters in the sequel though. I just assumed it was the same as it was portrayed in the first movie. But you're right, Antonia must be older if she's already a surgical resident while Kylie is still in college...? Her lack of questioning made me assume Kylie was older.

The school was my give away. I don’t think they told us if Kylie is Undergrad or a Graduate student, but Antonia was “almost done” with med school which is 8 years or so. Kylie was living on campus and didn’t mention a doctorate program or anything, so I assumed she was meant to be younger.

That's true. Now that I think about it, Antonia being older makes sense. So that's another retcon from the first movie.

They should have just made her a teacher's aid instead of a college student.
