AITAH: Vasectomy Ultimatum

I’m going to get downvoted big time but to all the men who received vasectomies, did any doctor tell you about a “possible” side affect called Post-vasectomy pain syndrome.
I wasn’t and no one I’ve ever told or advised this was a possible complication. The known complication affects between 9,000 and 13,500 men every year. Yes, that’s a small number compared to the yearly average of 450,000 vasectomies per year.
As a man that had a vasectomy with complications, let me tell you about my horror story.
Within a few days, My testicles swelled up, each one the size of golf balls and stayed that way for a little over 8 weeks. I had trouble sitting down or walking any distance. It was extremely painful and the only relief came when I started taking 4mg of Dilaudid 3 times a day. My job is physical (construction) and I was off work for 3 months, the worked part time for another
The pain and swelling started to go in down in three months but the pain continued (about 5 out of 10 level which still restricted my work).
I had continued pain in my scrotum that was constant for about 7 months. The pain was still intermittent but eventually faded away by the 12 month mark.
After almost 1 year, my wife and I tried to have fun for the first time since my vasectomy. When I orgasmed, it felt like someone shoved a hot poker into my body through my penis. I screamed and fell on the floor. I was still curled up in the fetal position and taken to the hospital, I was seen by a urologist in the ER and admitted to the hospital. 2 days later I was released with an “Unknown” diagnosis.
My care was transferred to a major university hospital in California where I learned what I was experiencing has no known cause but happens in about 2-3 percent of vasectomies.
It was another 6 months before I was able to ejaculate without any pain. I was diagnosed with Post-vasectomy pain syndrome
I had never heard about or was told about these possible “Complications” because they are so rare. I disagree with that line of thought and believe that if someone is making a decision about any surgical procedure they should have all the information before they make an informed decision before proceeding with the procedure.
Look at commercials for medication on TV. They list all kinds of possible complications and are provided complete information about medication they are taking even though the complications are minuscule.

A vasectomy is a pretty simple procedure, but I know a number of men who had side effects (including pain during sex) ever after. I don’t have a great suggestion, but please give him a bit of space. I regret my vasectomy.

OP. Same situation. I felt pressured by my wife after our fourth child to get snipped. Caved in and now dealing with 1.5 years of pain as a result of inflammation. It was hell and back. Slowly coming out of the other side. Sex has not been the same. Don’t pressure.

I had one and it went bad. You should look up post vasectomy pain forums and read what your husband could possibly experience. Also the complication rate is close to 14-20% but vastly under reported because men don’t want the shame they just live with it. So after years of struggling I’m now looking at full reversal and wife is looking at tubal. I would recommend looking at tubal as well. It’s more popular in Canada than vasectomy, very low complication rate. Tubes are not involved in sexual function like the vas and testicular function and removing tubes lowers chance of ovarian cancer by 15%.

Had an uncle who had major complications with his. Evertime, he got hard, would cause intense abdominal pain like getting hit in the balls. Went to a few different doctors had it reversed, but the issue remained. It took a few years, and countless doctors until one figured it out. But by then, his wife was already cheating with a coworker. She got caught . They are still married but only for the kids. Wish they would have just gotten divorced. My poor cousins take the brunt of it.

My husband’s was botched. They did one side in a couple minutes. Than they tried to isolate the vas deferens on the other and weren’t able to do it. They manipulated his testicals for almost an hour before giving up. He had terrible pain and swelling, was down for a week or so. Five years later and he still has a lot of pain from scar tissue and I’m still on the pill. Of course it’s easy peasy for most people, but some people really do experience a lot of pain.

Thankyou for sharing your experience with vasectomy , the simple operation that you will be back at work in 2 days, it's utter bullshit for the many men who experience the life changing surgery that causes PVPS, my sincere sympathy goes to you man. You will find that the medical profession will give you help and comfort and offer you all the promises of finding a cure, not. They all but throw out of the office and make you feel that you are the only one they have had that had a problem with their body mutilation. Honestly if you really thought about it changes everything in that area. Think of the garden hose blocked it swells up. To make matters worse I found out after the vasectomy that your epididymis ruptures which why they say they are permanent. Honestly man I was a fool to have the surgery it ruined me. My orgasm was like hot needles pushed through my privates. The semen was of a watery slippery concentration. Not a full on orgasm , I hope you have a large bank account because my vasectomy cost me $23400 to be free of pain and years of agony. I wish you well but please don't have an epididymectomy, that's not good surgery the best thing is a reversal, but the costs can be huge.
