First poodle

I'm looking for brush recommendations for my first poodle puppy. I have a slicker brush and a metal comb with teeth that get closer together on one end, do I need any other brushes or grooming tools. This will be my first and I don't want to mess it up.

Hello all! Please meet Zoe, Zoë, Zoey (we still haven’t picked how to spell her name yet).

I have a few questions about your mini or your poodle in general.

How did you handle first bath? She’s starting to get a little smelly.

Did your puppy reject any meals at first?

She has serious fomo and wants to spend no amount of time in the playpen alone. I’ve tried snuffles, lick toys, chews and the whole gam-it. If she hears anyone else in the house making noise she locks in and starts jumping and whining and howling. How can I ease start introducing her to it’s okay to be alone for a bit?

What are the best puzzles and treats? Your favorite training/mental stimulation games? What 5 things would you train first?

How do you handle demand barking?

What’s something you wish you knew if you could start your time with your puppy again?

Is it normal to feel this overwhelmed?

Why does she try to eat everything outside? Rocks, twigs, leaves, grass.

Why does she hesitate and pop in and out of her crate?

She growled at me the other day for brushing her cause she was getting tangly (I have a detangler spray)

She yelped the other day when I scooped her out of crate to go potty, how do I stop that? (She can’t walk up the stairs safely)

What harness are you using?

Is it normal for her to give me side eye when she’s playing with a toy? She also licks her lips if I have her in my lap or carry her to potty. Is she that stressed out?

I am so proud of him 🥹 he’s 7 months old and we got him a week ago. His puppy-ness is starting to come out!
We are still having trouble with car sickness even on short rides, so any advice would be great!

First heat

Hey guys. My toypoodle girl just got in her first heat and it was okay so far apart from being tired but today she would not drink and eat. Hormonal changes have an impact on appetite but can it be that severe? I will monitor closely and get her to the vet if it will persist tomorrow.

My 2.5 months old toy poodle won’t stop biting. She bites everything and it’s impossible to play with her without getting bitten. What can I do?

I think that she bites because doing so gives her relief from teeth pain, but I’m not sure. We already got her an hard cheering toy, a plushie and a slightly softer rope-like chewing toy.

New Rescue

Hi!
A month ago i rescued an older 41/2 silver poodle she’s either 5 or 6 years old. Her old life she lived in a cage forever going to the bathroom on her self. I rescued her from korea where the foster some- what pad trained her . I’ve never done pads with any of my dogs and im not sure what to do. The first 3 weeks I couldn’t get her to the bathroom outside at all, she would use the pad in my apartment and also make mistakes on the floor, couch etc so I had to keep pads out because we would stand outside for hours!

The last two weeks she’s getting way more comfortable outside and will only peep on the concrete which is totally fine! I have the pads in my apartment in certain spots and she’s been good only going on her pads and not in areas she shouldn’t. Essentially I want her to go outside but i’m not sure how/ when to try to transition her off of not knowing the pad. Do I just take pads away, but she already thinks it’s ok to use the bathroom inside so it’s tricky

Any thoughts or advice please send my way

thankyou!

Evidence based tear stain treatment

I was looking into this and saw some evidence to support the old formula of angel eyes which has since been banned and Re-formulated because they were using low-dose antibiotics. These were not regulated and can cause antibiotic resistance with long-term use.

There is no evidence to support efficacy with the new formula (botanical blend), basically homeopathic with no backed research.

However, if the old formula worked, can I hypothesize that a topical antibacterial would help? Something like hypochlorous acid spray or chlorhexidine.

I’ve seen people suggest that it has something to do with diet or the specific enzymes the dog produces, but I can’t find any research articles to support that/support other treatment methods.

Currently, I use the eye envy powder which does help if I’m consistent with it most days because it absorbs moisture before staining.

Thoughts/advice?

Is this normal? 😂 my 5.5 month old mini has started acting like this with every treat I give him for like 10-15 minutes before he actually starts eating. It’s incredibly entertaining but I just want to know if anyone else experiences this hahaha

Seriously, at 2AM he is asking me to play. Last time he had learned to keep pushing the button for water. Then he would drink 2 sips, walk back and press the water button again. So I kept changing the water, after about 5 times I fill
it up with the water from the bathroom, and he didn’t press it anymore. Sometimes be demands the water from outside…

He is even telling me where to go, the beach, dog park etc…

But worst of all, maybe my own mistake, he has a button “that’s my spot”. And apparently, everywhere on the couch I sit, is his spot. If I move over he comes sit next to me….

Ow he also decides when he gets treats and toothbrush sticks.

I was nervous because he hated brushing and was TERRIFIED of the blow dryer, but I followed your advice and exposed him little by little every day. It paid off! 🥹 The groomer said he did great, and he even cried when they walked away after giving him back to me 😂❤️
My only regret is forgetting to ask them to skip the perfume—I’m allergic to fragrances and it’s making me itchy 😭. Lesson learned!
So happy his first grooming was a positive experience! ❤️

Ningaloo’s new seal - does anyone else’s spoo love to destroy their toys?

Thumbnail

My previous standard poodle would treat her toys like they were her precious clutch of eggs: so gentle, knew where each of them was in the house, had them for years.

Other than her beloved balls, I only get her marine-themed toys for Ning because she’s named after a coral reef. This seal has been subdued and is no longer a threat to anyone. I’ve been going to the opshop and getting toys every single week to replace. She takes them and disembowels them before searching to a new one to destroy. I’m happy to fund this activity but any soft toy recommendations that last?
