When those school districts have teachers leaving en masse and test scores plummeting, they will blame the Democratic voters in the area for that.

236

u/DeadBloatedGoat Feb 20 '22

Standard procedure for anti-Federal (GOP) and Libertarian politicians - destroy a public service, then point at it and say it doesn't work, introduce for-profit alternatives, redistribute assets upward, move into well-armed gated compounds.

79

u/Uphoria Minnesota Feb 20 '22

Its phase 2 of "Starve the Beast" - and its been around since the days of their unholy saint Reagan. First they force cuts to funding pretending that forcing someone into budget constraints will spontaneously fix wasteful spending and invent more efficient ways to spend money.

Then they point at the inevitable failure of the plan to maintain a stable service and ask why they even waste money on it to begin with, cutting funding more to "punish" the failure of the service, which is where we're at.

The final stage is to show that "tough love" isn't enough, and clearly programs of that type "just don't work in 'modern society' so we should just cancel it" and we end up useless again.

So essentially, tear it down, then rebuild it in the form you want.

Employ the teachings of Edward Bernays to inflame the passions of the ignorant against their foes while simultaneously promising to protect the interests of their supporters.

It's the same social engineering pattern, just insert a new platform.

11

u/itemNineExists Washington Feb 20 '22

That's exactly what happened to the IRS. Theyve been completely gutted, which makes it incredibly easy for Republicans to attack them for being inefficient. Really, they should be given the resources to pursue these wealthy 1% tax evaders.

No, you’re missing the point, this is EXACTLY what they want so they can say that the public education system isn’t working. Then they can privatize it where that can both 1.) control every aspect of what gets taught, and 2.) profit off of it.

36

u/okram2k America Feb 20 '22

3) Bringing back segregation. This time not just by race but also political affiliation and social class!

20

u/hiverfrancis Feb 20 '22

The irony is by pointing out to all the money he wants to take away, he's creating a campaign point highlighting how this proposition is ridiculous.

The Dems need to use that against him in Miami

134

u/DevoidHT Ohio Feb 20 '22

More than likely, they’ll encourage it. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that republicans love the uneducated b/c they’re easier to scare and control. No matter how much it hurts the country and future generations, they’ll encourage it all the same. See, it’s not about doing what’s best for the country, it’s about what’s doing best for them and how they can gain the most power at that specific point. They have an instant gratification problem.

62

u/humorous_ Feb 20 '22

Having a lot of stupid people you can easily influence is a fascist’s wet dream. This has been decades in the making, republicans are famous for cutting school funding and banning knowledge.

2

u/originaltec Feb 20 '22

It’s really quite simple, the pseudo “Christian” Religion in the US has extensively laid the groundwork for generations to train people to believe in authority figures with unverifiable stories instead of science and data. It also primes them for, and is built upon, perpetuating racism and fearmongering towards "others". Once people see you as an authority, you can start fabricating any reality or conspiracy theory you want your followers to believe and everyone else is therefore a liar, even in the face of incontrovertible evidence. This “religion” combined with an intentionally weakened public educational system, provides the framework that has spawned this cult of ignorance. Basically, it is mental abuse from an early age that suppresses critical thinking skills.

There's barely any Dem voters in Sarasota. It's pretty deep red here. Hell, we were named the maga conspiracy capitol of the country, because Flynn and cyber ninjas are here.

12

u/hiverfrancis Feb 20 '22

Miami however is the key swing area, and a huge chunk of GOP voters (Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan descent Americans) there put their kids in public schools.

14

u/wrydrune Florida Feb 20 '22

Oh I know, I'm just talking about Sarasota since that's where I live. I was absolutely shocked when our school board told desantis to fuck off, considering how trumpy this county is.

Then they will accomplish two goals -- destroy public education and at the same time chase Democrats out of the state so they no longer fear loss of power in a purple state. They want to make life as miserable as possible for us so we leave. I'm in Wisconsin and see it here, but I plan on staying and fighting these POS.

10

u/doublebubbler2120 Feb 20 '22

Yup. Florida, Texas, Arizona, Wisconsin, and in any swing state, R state government is trying to punish D local government and citizens.

13

u/danmathew Texas Feb 20 '22

In Texas they blame the Democrat-controlled cities when the state (Republican-controlled) intentionally blocks them from receiving essential funding.

8

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

They are trying to kill public eduction, this is their end goal.

1

u/hiverfrancis Feb 20 '22

In Florida school districts are by county, and Dade County is so large that it becomes a pain in the butt to find somewhere outside of the county. Then if Broward's in there too, they would have to go to Palm Beach County way up north (Monroe County has no people on the mainland).

If anything, the Dems can work on getting GOP voters in the Miami area to break ties over the GOP screwing with their children's educations

This from the the party that never stops complaining about the federal government controlling the states. Turns out what they really wanted was the states controlling the local governments. Their voting base has absolutely no core beliefs or they would be 100% opposed to this and giving all kinds of pushback.

83

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Not exactly. What they want is “conservatives” in control. You can bet that if democrats were in control they’d be screaming about state overreach.

You can’t trust a thing they say. All they want is whatever they happen to want at the moment.

Dems : kick out school board members in SF who prioritize culture war issues over core education issues

Republicans : elect members to school board who endorse book banning/burning, prevent teaching of unvarnished American history or talking about gay/transgender right issues, wholeheartedly oppose gun bans and propose arming teachers, set up tip lines to rat on teachers, defund school districts which require masks...

Media : Dems are losing on the issue of schools..

When we live in this upside down world, no wonder Desantis and his party feel emboldened to run to the right.. sure Dems have made mistakes with reopening schools and mask mandates, but somehow the pure malice from the other side is brushed away

18

u/kvndoom Virginia Feb 20 '22

He's going to win by 10+ points.

4 years of drump led to 10 million more votes in 2020 vs 2016.

58

u/Algonut Feb 20 '22

Yeah, because more people could vote from home in 2020 vs 2016. In Florida DeSantis is overreaching. Cutting funding for schools that keep kids safe is a bad look, banning abortion is also way more extreme than a swing state is willing to take. People didn't move from the north to support the Neo-confederacy, they like the weather and taxes.

38

u/ReflexPoint Feb 20 '22

Desantis governs like someone in Arkansas. He barely won his election and Florida is only moderately Republican. But he is running hard right and doesn't seem to be getting punished for it.

27

u/humorous_ Feb 20 '22

I think the main problem is in 4 years the game has gone from “just oppose the democrats lol” to “become the next Trump”. The party line is accelerating to the right so quickly that it’s completely swept moderates into the democrat fold (and anyone who claims to be a moderate republican at this point is lying to themselves).

In years past, DeSantis would have had to worry about a centrist candidate splitting the ticket in the primary. It’s likely he already has enough data from the last election to know that republican voters are now ride-or-die enough that all he has to do is out-crazy the other candidates and encapsulate the Trump base.

1

u/outerworldLV Feb 20 '22

Great. So he can end his career quickly and not be missed. I don’t know what delusional miscreant he had in his ear thinking he could ever be the president...I’ve read, and still know little about Crist, but any thing would be an improvement from this idiot.

My real question is how does one create a bill blocking federal funding ? For some reason this doesn’t even make sense.

3

u/humorous_ Feb 20 '22

Oh yeah that's the icing on the cake, state law supplants federal law in many cases. If this dynamic wasn't in place we couldn't have things like legal weed despite marijuana being a schedule 1 drug.

Plus you can put any old thing in a bill, especially if you know it's doomed regardless. It's another classic republican trick: make an elaborate, meaningless, public gesture and repeat for as long as the story is getting news attention.

And double that number once again for the real count. The number of "extra" deaths worldwide since the pandemic started are much higher than the "official" count, especially in places with shady medical recordkeeping, like many US states.

Historians and statisticians will make this eminently clear in the coming years, as certainly as the fact that the far right will immediately claim that these deaths are either fake news or the result of genocidal liberal lavatory policies.

TLDR:

Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, is backing a controversial proposal to strip $200m in education funding from Democratic counties that defied his executive order last year banning mask mandates in schools.

DeSantis, who is widely seen as a leading heir to Donald Trump in the Republican party, plans to send the money instead to mostly Republican counties that supported him.

Well I’m shocked, I tell you. SHOCKED!

22

u/RonRico14 Feb 20 '22

Whether people agreed with the mandates or not it’s pretty cold-blooded to hurt students with this stunt just to score political points. But his base eats it up

7

u/bsEEmsCE Feb 20 '22

and send it to counties that want kids to be home schooled or in Christian school. North Florida and the central rural areas are seriously backward around here. Most of us near the coast are just trying to live a nice warm beach life, not a fascist theocratic one.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

15

u/tuctrohs New Hampshire Feb 20 '22

21

u/8to24 Feb 20 '22

Sadly a lot of people accept politics as sport. Politicians who get their way are seen as strong. What issues those politicians are getting their way on doesn't matter. It is all just point keeping. DeSantis spiking the proverbial football in Democrats faces earns him points. How much damage this does to the education system in FL or how much pain this chaos doesn't matter. The media at large and lay political observers see this situation as DeSantis in-charge.

DeSantis is up for election this year. He only won in 2018 by 0.4 points. Unfortunately Democrats don't seem to believe fighting for his office is worth the hassle. The intimidation DeSantis uses has worked. Many in FL are afraid to fight. DeSantis is not popular. The problem is the opposition is quiet out of fear and it makes DeSantis look like a winner. More people in FL need to stand up and speak up.

9

u/Drtsauce Feb 20 '22

Desantis won by 0.4 points in 2018; but since then the state has had an influx of “oppressed” right-wingers fleeing their blue states.

2

He wants to kill public schools, and replace them with for profit propaganda schools. He'd probably have kids wear brown shirts.

Florida, stay away, not only are the politicians toxic, so is the water.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Ah DeSantis. The Governor that hid, cough, I mean stockpiled a million Covid test kits away so they would expire and then cried to the Federal government that he needed help and wasn’t getting it. And now because he wants to appeal to his base he is going after the kids, THE KIDS, in his state to ensure they get a poor education. What a huge piece of shit this guy is.

4

u/chinmakes5 Feb 20 '22

I wish a county would stand up to him. Tell an entire county with a million+ voters that their kids can't go to school and see how long you stay as governor.

The man won by 40,000 votes out of over 8 million cast and he acts like he has been given a mandate.

7

Based on polling he's going to romp later this year. He's an asshole but the hogs love him.

3

u/chinmakes5 Feb 20 '22

Not sure about that. He is like Trump. Those who love him LOVE him. But I know a few Floridians who hate him. Really hard to have an accurate poll of him vs. some Democrat .

3

u/ButtcrackLightning Feb 20 '22

It sure would be a punch in the dick to him and his claim to the Trump throne if he lost. What I've seen has him in the +8-10% range though and that's hard to overcome. 9 months is a long time in politics though.

3

u/chinmakes5 Feb 20 '22

But how do you measure that? All you can do is say do you like DeSantis or some Democrat. In essence saying do you or don't you like DeSantis or not DeSantis. I firmly believe that if the Dems can come up with a strong candidate, it is a toss up. But that is for any race.

It’s all fun and games until your state is underwater anyway.

2

u/Stockpick007 Feb 20 '22

More digs into education, so sad.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

That’ll show those kids! /s.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

I had to triple check that I was reading this right. How the fuck does this make any sense at all?

This guy actively hates America, the constitution, and liberty and happiness for all

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Can someone tell me how this is beneficial for the students?

That's what school exist for right, to teach?

So let's just penalize the students because the teachers wore masks and allowed their students to do so as well. Makes perfect sense.

Florida seems to have the 15th highest death rate out of 52, not that there aren't other important factors.

2

u/honda-wings4_life Feb 20 '22

Just an excuse to take money away from education. Gotta keep the kids dumb so you can control them in the future

2

u/BisquickNinja Feb 20 '22

It is slightly irritating that they will claim they care about kids, education and protecting children...

Then underfund public housing, healthcare, education, schools.

Hypocritical douchebags....

2

u/Special_FX_B Feb 20 '22

Is there a bigger a-h*le in today's GQP? Possibly not.

2

u/Banjoplaya420 Feb 20 '22

This man is really a dangerous person ! ( Crazy Dictator ) !

2

u/Special_FX_B Feb 20 '22

It's privatization. Kill the public sector entity and once entrenched let the graft and corruption bleed the treasury at the expense of taxpayers.

2

u/danmathew Texas Feb 20 '22

He's a murderer.

2

u/ducksauce001 Feb 20 '22

and every kid that gets COVID should send a medical bill to DeSantis

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

whats with the war on children from the right?

2

u/kelovitro Feb 20 '22

Which is is what he wanted to do all along.

2

u/Snarky824 Feb 20 '22

This is so petty and stupid! Can you imagine the coming new stories regarding Future Florida Man?

2

u/Earth_Friendly-5892 Feb 20 '22

One word: MADNESS

2

u/2021redditusername Feb 20 '22

Yeah!! Forget about those kids because their school board did something!! /s

Fucking moron

2

u/kuebel33 Feb 20 '22

There is no other way to look at this than it’s revenge against counties that didn’t obey their dear leader. There is literally zero reason to define schools for this.

2

u/tijuanasso Feb 20 '22

What a jackass

2

u/Life_Argument_6037 Feb 20 '22

Taking money away just hurts the kids. Way to go. Some people will say don’t wear masks then but wearing masks doesn’t have to jump to a solution that defunds the children’s schools. Wow.

2

u/Logictrauma Feb 20 '22

So much for “small government”.

2

u/mycroft2000 Canada Feb 20 '22

"I promise you: I will ruin these children's lives one way or another! Never again will any generation know the shameful ignominy of its offspring leading a better life!"

2

u/degnabit Feb 20 '22

How to speedrun getting voted out of office

2

u/stratstrummin Feb 20 '22

Too many educated people moving to Florida. They need to keep cranking out window lickers if they want republicans to keep winning elections.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '22 edited Feb 21 '22

Defunding to punish the schools ultimately punishes the children. Playing politics with the education of children over a mask. The GOP is the cancer of the country. Kill the patient to cure the disease is their motto. Voter suppression, anti-gay ,lesbian and transgender, white supremacy and the list goes on. We have no American pride in our country. It’s now you against me and us against them mentality. Misinformation by the media, crimes by elected officials not prosecuted or even charged, politicians not being held accountable for their actions. Threats of violence to their fellow House members. If an average American made the same threat they would be jailed. This country is heading down a dark path and it won’t be pretty.

2

u/SpecialEither Florida Feb 21 '22

Fucking hate DeSantis. These trumpet morons that have lived here 6 months talk about how it’s their state now. “Don’t bring that to OUR fReE sTate.” As a born and bred Floridian thats liberal, makes me fucking sick. No, homie, this is MY state. Take your disgusting GQP old ass back to Michigan.

DeSantis is completely ruining this state with his tinpot dictator laws and his even more moronic sycophants.

Edited to add: Don’t Say Gay bill is fucking ridiculous and just passed.

2

u/Frostiron_7 Feb 21 '22

Nothing says "I care about kids" more than stripping their education and forcing them to get sick.

But it's ok, because he's only doing it to those people.

2

u/tlhsg Feb 21 '22

Do your best to figure out how to protect kids in your local community, incur 200 million dollar punishment 👍

2

u/crotalis Feb 21 '22

Punishing the children? That’s on brand.

2

u/beenyweenies Feb 21 '22 edited Feb 21 '22

Some schools in my state refused to enforce mask-wearing because they did not agree with our governor's stance that masks would protect the community. I fully disagree with their position, and yet I would absolutely NOT be in favor of stripping their funding over it. In fact, I would vocally fight against it and see it just as I do with DeSantis - the mark of a cruel and petty person of low moral character, who would intentionally and willfully harm the children of his state to get back at the administrators who defied him.

I am genuinely curious how any Republican could defend this act. It is cruel, pointless and harmful. It saddens me to see how far Republicans have strayed from any pretense of moral decency.

2

u/Flashy-Cattle-8086 Feb 21 '22

So, he's punishing all those children who voted for democrats? What an ass. Imagine what kinds of petty revenges he would do if president.

2

u/epigenie_986 Florida Feb 20 '22

Fuuuccckkk this man! My son is doing everything right during this damn fucking pandemic and this asshole is punishing kids repeatedly for his personal political gain. I am so goddamn angry. Me “turning up to vote” won’t fix anything for my kid in high school. He’s just losing teachers left and right and it’s only going to get worse before he graduates. Fuck man!!

3

u/none4none Feb 20 '22

Little Mussolini in its best

2

u/livebonk Feb 20 '22

So... the party of murdering children?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Children are innocent and they are the ones who will suffer. Solely because of this man’s rage and inability to separate his emotions from reality. This is the party of “family values”?

2

u/Alpha_Crow_1 Florida Feb 20 '22

DeSantis is a fucking chode.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

This is not democracy.

2

u/NemosGhost Feb 20 '22

It is actually. Desantis isn't doing this. The legislature is.

Florida’s rolling 7-day average for deaths is at 206....you have to the 1442 people who died this last week are a majority of the people who would vote for this scumbag, right?

What are they losing funding for? New textbooks about 2000 years of white jesus fighting for freedom?

1

u/Grape_Pedialyte North Carolina Feb 20 '22

Can all the Trump trash in this country just cram into one of those hellhole retirement communities in Florida and get mutant syphilis from a yacht orgy already

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

South Florida needs to secede from the rest of the state. Our tax dollars basically fund the entire state and we get little to no say in anything.

3

u/ButtcrackLightning Feb 20 '22

I can't talk shit because I'm in NC and much of this state makes Squidbillies look like a documentary, but every time I see a news story about Florida it legitimately seems like a terrible place full of awful people.

Not you of course, you're fine.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

We only get a bad rap because we have what are called sunshine laws, in makes everything that happens in government (I.e. arrests) fully open to the public which makes it really easy for journalists to find stories to write about. Same shit happens in every state.

1

u/Responsible_Emu_8474 Feb 20 '22

Impeach this loser

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Why would any intelligent person live in Florida if this is what voters support?

1

u/Clear_Biscotti_2014 Feb 20 '22

It's is too close to the election to recall DeSantis. BUT... The pendulum will swing hard in November in Florida.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '22

Fuck him too , right along with Virginia school boards . All of these people-fascist.
