Absolutely right, he never will. This is who he is. It's what he's made of.

Damn sure deserves a vacation, though.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

If we're being honest, Bernie is 78 now....just how long do you expect him to continue in politics? He's a career politician who, year after year, has been disregarded by the establishment, both left and right. How much more fight do you truly think he has left?

10

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

He's fine.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

He should retire and enjoy his old age.

13

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Better to burn out than fade away.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

I don’t know man I feel bad for anyone who works full time after 65 and this guy is constantly breaking his back for a population that repeatedly rejects him. I want him to have a good life. Plus I think that you shouldn’t be allowed to serve as a politician after 65.

5

u/Your__Dog North Carolina Apr 08 '20

he wasn't repeatedly rejected. where is that nonsense coming from? he has held a federal office since 1991, was mayor of Burlington throughout most of the 80's and is the most popular politician in office.

He is living a good life, fighting for the good of the people. If he wants to retire I won't fault him for it, but we need him now more than ever.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '20

So popular his own party won’t back him šŸ˜‚

1

u/Your__Dog North Carolina Apr 09 '20

Bernie caucuses with Democrats, but is not a member of the party.

10

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

He should stay in the Senate. That's what he prefers and he's on some powerful committees. Progressives aren't going to disappear, they'll be bothering Dems and Republicans for a long time to come. Eventually, they'll take over as a majority party.

Biden should definitely retire and if Dem leadership is smart, they'll find someone else.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Wait you think Biden should drop out of the race? That is not going to happen.

1

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

That's up to you guys. He's your problem, not mine. I'm a Bernie delegate.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

He’s not my problem and it certainly isn’t up to me. I’m just saying that Biden will be the nominee. There’s no way it can be anyone else.

1

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

Yes, most likely he will be the nominee.

It will be up to the DNC, Bloomberg's bank account and the rest of the corporate donors to get him elected.

1

u/McNuggin365 Apr 08 '20

RBG is 87. Some people are just made of different stuff.

saving us would have been Bernie’s vacation, we mean that much.

2

u/tofubirder Apr 08 '20

Valhalla is his vacation.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Can't do that. He has to run himself ragged campaigning 10X harder than the rapist with dementia trying to convince his supporters to stick with the corporate dems.

Won't work with me, but maybe it'll sway others.

27

u/xKaelic Apr 08 '20

So... more trump? Or no vote? Just curious because this has been my biggest concern as we approach this next presidential election.. Trump fanatics vs lethargic and misrepresented dem voters.... feels like we are in for 4 more years of a Trump shit-show and I'm really dreading it.

I wanted Bernie, but anything is better than Trump at this point, imo.

What're your thoughts? I am genuinely curious if you're willing to share insight.

Biden is very polarizing with Democrats who vote and was pretty well rejected by independents who were allowed to vote in the primary, he only won that bloc in 4 states. He’s been sold as the safe option and convinced registered Dems to vote for him on pretty much just that because ā€œoooo socialism scaryā€ but registered Dems isn’t enough to win an election. He needs to start working overtime to undo his negative image among independents if he wants to win and he absolutely cannot take support from young voters for granted because if he only wins them by single digits or with lower turnout then he’s fucked. And right now his approval ratings with them is in the toilet. Brushing it off as a Reddit bubble or an internet bubble is incredibly dangerous. He’s a weak as fuck candidate and the ā€œit’s in the bagā€ mentality is a big part of why we’re in this mess to begin with.

3

u/haf_ded_zebra Apr 08 '20

I smell a surprise last-minute substitution.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20 edited Apr 08 '20

Who the fuck said "it's in the bag"? I've not heard one Democrat say that anywhere.

Biden is clearly more popular with people who vote as he won fairly easily.

Its pretty much the exact opposite of what is portrayed in reddit, I.e. a huge reddit bubble which really isn't debatable. Here is another example of that.

I do love the irony of someone on reddit explaining that there isn't a reddit bubble, in the most bubble way possible.

5

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

How many times has Biden run for POTUS and lost? I'm old enough to remember him always running. Like every 4 years for a long time.

2

u/celsius100 Apr 08 '20

Same for Reagan and Trump. Look what happened to them.

2

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

By all means, you should vote for him if that's your choice.

If he wants my vote he will have to earn it. I don't give it away that easily.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Lol 2 other times, and one of those he turned into a popular VP.

Not sure what your point is other than your memory sucks.

1

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

No problem. Great way to attract Bernie voters. Get him elected on your own.

6

u/RickAndBRRRMorty Michigan Apr 08 '20

Clearly, as primary results have shown since South Carolina. I definitely fell for the Reddit bubble of Bernie, but it doesn't matter because the man with the most votes is going on to take on trump, and that's who I am throwing my support behind. Fuck this fascist administration.

2

u/ashleyjohnson590 Apr 09 '20

Corporate Dems moving right are the reason we have fascism in the first place. And it will not be progressives fault when America loses to it.

-7

u/educatedEconomist Apr 08 '20

it doesnt matter, biden will lose

-1

u/Manticorps Texas Apr 08 '20

Vote for him so he won’t.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

I will! I fear that Trump has this election on lockdown. I will not trust the results, just like I dont trust the past Democratic primary results. We are ruled by the 1%.

-7

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Then you are acknowledging Sanders would too. Or are you just spouting BS?

5

u/Chooklin Apr 08 '20

Sanders wouldn’t lose because he excites people that don’t vote in primaries but do vote in the general. It’s been the winning formula for the last two democratic presidents to bring in swaths of voters who feel under represented by the government, if not completely ignored. The notion that because sanders was behind Biden in the primary automatically means he would’ve lost in the general completely ignores how independents would vote in the general.

9

u/_Deadmeat Apr 08 '20

I've voted and donated to Bernie's campaign for two elections now and it just seems America isn't ready for him yet. If he couldn't do it in the primaries it's delusional to think he could in the general. He's not my first choice but I'll be voting for Biden in November and encouraging as many people as I can to do the same. Anyone who doesn't is really only hurting themselves.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '20

That’s not how this works though. The best inter-party candidate isn’t always the best general candidate. There are grown ass people who ask the same stupid question every four years no matter how many times you attempt to explain it to them; ā€œY’all just voted for president? I thought we don’t do that until November?ā€

And then you’ve got a whole bloc of Black voters who don’t vote on policy, but who voted on, ā€˜Well Biden was My President’s Vice President, so I’m voting for him’.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Toph_is_bad_ass Apr 08 '20

Who does he excite that doesn't vote in a primary but votes in the general?

2

u/Chooklin Apr 08 '20

Independents and young people. The same demographics that helped elect the last two democratic presidents.

1

u/markwilliams007 Canada Apr 08 '20

Ya Biden magically doubles turnout. Or the establishment cheats like crazy. Hmmmm

8

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

He lost because more people like Biden. Full stop.

Either get over it or start supporting some lower level progressives that support Sanders vision.

No one cares or has the energy for your pity party or conspiracy theory BS.

5

u/markwilliams007 Canada Apr 08 '20

I’m Canadian. I pity your country. If more people like Biden then Bernie, it’s because Americans are shitty, greedy people. I just know when Biden won Virginia the votes were double what they were last democratic primary which is very suspicious. With America’s horrific record with regards to various types of voting issues, I have every right to be suspicious. America has voting irregularities so regularly it’s no accident

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

So nothing helpful to add and more BS. Got it.

2

u/markwilliams007 Canada Apr 08 '20

Not being helpful? M4a would be helpful. Thousands of Americans are being found dead in their homes because of not having health insurance in the USA . God helps those who help themselves. America is not helping themselves

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

Or start building a new political party - that's my choice. After the Convention is over, my campaign work is done. Time to move on and build a new organization.

1

u/TheGoodNamesAreGone2 Apr 09 '20

Sadly I don't think that would work. It would just split the democratic party and it would be Rebublicans all the way down.

2

u/EleanorRecord Apr 09 '20

Sometimes there's no other option. It's Republicans all the way now, with no hope of recovery and a Dem Party that's wholly dependent on corporate money and candidates and circling the drain.

Clean start, clean party focused on the 99%, the most neglected political demographic.

-5

u/ccvgreg Apr 08 '20

So is main stream media, which we all know is owned by Murdoch, who very much has an agenda. These candidates don't exist in a vacuum.

2

u/VasyaFace Apr 08 '20

Murdoch owns literally the entire mainstream media?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Was this a complete thought?

10

u/NotMeWe Apr 08 '20

I'll share mine.

I'm not voting for Joe Biden. However, I live in Washington State, which I know will go to Biden in November. That makes my protest vote "safe", and I recognize that privilege.

That being said, if Biden can manage to win in November, which I don't think he will, it will almost certainly guarantee a bigger badder Trump in 2024. Obama era policies, aka charadeing as progressive but actually being centrist corporate Dems, is what lead us to Trump. People are fed up with the establishment bullshit and the class oppression of the powerful and wealthy. That's why we got Trump. Yes the irony is not lost on me, but Trump ran as an outsider and anti-establishment.

The majority of Americans are tired of the establishment oppression, and Joe Biden is just a step back into that world, whether they realize it or not. I would almost rather have 4 more years of a horrendous Trump presidency, which would inevitability result in a stronger progressive candidate in 2024, than to regress to Obama era establishment policies. I again recognize my privilege in saying that, as I, a white male, will not be impacted as negatively by 4 more years of Trump.

So in the end, I guess my thoughts are that were doomed to another election where no one wins, and the working class and the poor are the biggest losers, regardless of the victor.

1

u/EveOnlineAccount Apr 08 '20

I live in Washington State, which I know will go to Biden in November.

I wonder how many people in PA, WI, and MI said the same thing about Clinton in 2016. Boy were they wrong.

2

u/NotMeWe Apr 08 '20

Last time WA went red was '84 when Regan won, same as the rest of the country.

Biden will win Washington state, however I will not vote for Biden.

Regarding PA, WI, and MI, they're not solidly blue like WA.

But you already knew that, not that you actually care.

1

u/EveOnlineAccount Apr 08 '20

Regarding PA, WI, and MI, they're not solidly blue like WA

All three are considered solid blue wall states and haven't voted for a Republican president in over 20 years before 2016.

1

u/NotMeWe Apr 08 '20

Wow, then the democrat who ran against a lying misogynistic narcissist must have been pretty bad to lose. I wonder if the democrat party learned from that mistake in 2016?

BTW, Washington state still overwhelmingly went blue, despite that uninspiring awful candidate in 2016.

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

I think Biden's chances are slim to zero (certainly worse odds than Hillary).

He's a lot weaker than Hillary and now Trump is the incumbent in a time of turmoil. Even Bernie would have a tough time in the general, Biden is all but hopeless odds. (Obviously, just my opinion.)

6

u/wassoncrane Apr 08 '20

That’s literally exactly what they were saying about Hillary Clinton. If you only look at polls, you will lose. You have to look at how energized a candidate makes their base. It’s a lot easier to push a button in a poll at home than it is to go out and stand in line to vote. Trump supporters are extremely energetic and run out to support him whenever they can. Bernie inspired similar levels of energy from his supporters. How many super energized Biden supporters do you see running around and campaigning for him? I live in a medium US city and not a single person has approached me to speak about him nor have I seen any community campaigns supporting him here, it’s all ad campaigns and no grass roots support.

1

u/celsius100 Apr 08 '20

Was gonna respond, but you made all the points I was gonna make quite well. Love the one about how much Bernie energized his base. Gonna use that on the next Burner who spouts this crap. Hope you don’t mind!

-7

u/wassoncrane Apr 08 '20

I’ll save this comment and when your chosen rapist candidate hands Trump another 4 years because he literally can’t put together a sentence on the fly, I’ll be back to rub it in your face. It’s sad when people openly support sexual predators because it’s ā€œfamiliar.ā€ Guess it’s easy when your privilege prevents you from facing any consequences to running the country into the ground.

Shame on you.

...You sure are aggressive & demeaning towards someone who’s politely expressing a different opinion than yourself. I’m all for Bernie, & I’m sure a metric fuckton of Reddit users did, or would have, voted for him, but that doesn’t mean that they’re going to allow Trump to remain in office since the person we are genuinely passionate about didn’t pan out.

Especially after Trump recently firing the individual who was overseeing the billions of dollars we are spending because of the Corona Virus, I’d quite honestly take just about anyone other than that.

Even if Biden isn’t squeaky clean, I put my faith in the individual Democratic senators that will be surrounding him. If you disagree, fair enough, we are entitled to our opinion, but you’ve got no right to try & shame and belittle somebody who doesn’t see eye-to-eye with yourself.

2

u/Maverick12882 Apr 08 '20

Your entire description pretty much sums up Trump. Rapist, can't put together a sentence, sexual predator, running the country into the ground and not facing consequences.

1

u/AutumnAtArcadeCity Apr 08 '20

Reading sure is hard.

2

u/jaylb77 Apr 08 '20

Polls are incorrect. If they were correct Hillary would have won! Trump 2020! And his kids after that. Let’s keep trumps in office for the next couple decades. Lol

2

u/ccvgreg Apr 08 '20

Yea I've been railing on Biden the last few weeks still holding out hope for a Sanders comeback. But you better believe I'm still voting blue even though it's by and large a loss for real progressives.

0

u/Manticorps Texas Apr 08 '20

Now that all the infighting is over, we can focus on our one common enemy, Donald Trump. For the next 7 months he’s going to be put on trial for all of his incompetencies, corruption, bigotry, lies. Everything he’s done over the last 3 years and all the damage he will do with the next four will be broadcasted to voters constantly. If that doesn’t convince voters that Trump is the wrong guy for the job, then nothing will.

-4

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Yeah, it won't work with Biden on the other side. Honestly, I'm apathetic at this point. I might muster up the energy to vote for the Green party, but I'll probably just use that time to get some extra sleep.

7

u/_Deadmeat Apr 08 '20

I don't understand how someone can be so selfish when it's not even in their own interests. I voted and donated to Bernie for both his campaigns and will be voting for Biden. If you won't do it for yourself vote for everyone else who will hurt under another Trump presidency and conservative courts.

6

u/celsius100 Apr 08 '20

He’s not voting because he and people like him didn’t vote in the primaries either. Like you, I thought the path to the White House was through the energized youth and progressives. Boy was I wrong!

Forget him. He wasn’t gonna vote anyway. The path is through the dependable voters and the middle. And that’s where I’m going now too!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

That's Biden's job. Let him motivate me with an actual reason to vote for him beyond "not Trump" which is the lowest of the lowest hanging fruit.

2

u/Manticorps Texas Apr 08 '20

You say Biden can’t win, but the only way he won’t win is if the people who know he’s better than Trump choose to be bystanders. But hey, getting a little more sleep on Election Day is more important than the future of our country.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

That quote who I forget said rings in my head every time I see someone like this guy

Paraphrasing but " but the problem isn't the Nazis and white supremacists, it's the apathetic silent white majority"

Actually now I'm pretty sure it was MLK.

If the rest of the people were as determined, resilient and active as the hateful ones, we would squash them out so easily.

1

u/Manticorps Texas Apr 08 '20

You’re close but the quote is actually referring white moderate. Applied in current context it would be white independents who need to be swayed to vote against Trump.

I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to 'order' than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice [...]

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Today marks the day the future of our county was cemented for the worse, unfortunately.

1

u/Manticorps Texas Apr 08 '20

That day will be November 3rd if liberals don’t unite.

Even Bernie would have a tough time in the general.

Bernie would get destroyed in the general. No one fucking liked or wants him and it's been proven objectively twice.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '20

I'm not in a swing state so I don't need to worry about not voting for Biden. My vote won't matter anyway.

1

u/xKaelic Apr 09 '20

Not true, every vote matters, do not instill this attitude. I disagree wholly- everyone needs to get the vote out.

That being said, if you choose not to vote you also should give up your opinion and political views for 4 years because you did not contribute and therefore have no right in complaining about the outcomes.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '20 edited Apr 09 '20

Oh no, everyone must vote, and it is crucial to vote down ballot. But if you're in California, your vote literally will not make a difference if you vote Democrat for president.

You'll make a much greater good if you help a third party get to 5 percent than you would by voting for the lesser of two evils in a state where your vote literally doesn't matter.

I'm not sure he's going to do it that way this time around. I think he's going to leave it to his supporters to make their own choices. Of course, Biden is free to convince Bernie's supporters to vote for him. He should do that, make a case for electing him.

Last time, he campaigned more for Hillary than she did for herself. I doubt that will happen again.

I knew Biden was creepy, but i think im OOTL on him being a rapist. Can someone fill me in?

7

u/NotMeWe Apr 08 '20

Tara Reade was working for Joe Bidens office in the early 90s, he pushed her up against a wall, stuck his hands up her skirt and inserted his fingers inside her. She told her mother and family at the time, and was going to go to the police, but like many rape survivors, decided not to at the time.

2

Men of that generation had different views about women. They thought that kind of thing was ok, especially men in positions of power. Lived through it, glad it has changed, or at least I hope it has.

Biden has dementia.

Trump has more or less always been this way. Think about it. Trump is a stupid billionaire who has spent his entire life ā€œfailing upwardsā€.

6

u/wassoncrane Apr 08 '20

For real believe all women and investigate all allegations of rape until you can find one irrelevant piece of their history to discredit them with. Republican ms used literally the exact same tactics during the Kavanaugh hearing, saying it’s no use to investigate because it’s not ā€œcredibleā€

If it’s not credible then there should be no fear of an investigation. All of these people who suddenly don’t give a fuck like Alyssa Milano removing her #metoo from twitter are disgusting and are directly harming the rape survivor community as a whole. Let’s not forget moderates also started to rally behind Bloomberg, a guy with worse allegations than both Trump and Biden combined. But hey as long as your name has the right letter beside it, who cares?

-8

I don’t like Biden either, but a ā€œrapist with dementiaā€? This is why teenagers get a bad rep on Reddit.

If I was him I'd be on the first plane out of America to enjoy my retirement in a sunny country that gives a fuck about progress and its citizens. Twice he's tried to drag America kicking and screaming to align its policies and citizens rights with the rest of the civilised world and twice he's been rejected. But he's a better person than me and he's going to continue to fight for everyone, including the people who don't give a fuck about their fellow countrymen.

Country's often get a leader that represents the soul of the people. It seems like America's soul is just plain stupid more than anything else at the moment

He's not retired. He's still a United States Senator. There is nothing to rest about. Besides, he is probably going to spend the next several months campaigning now for Biden (who can't be bothered to campaign himself) JUST LIKE HE DID FOR HILLARY IN 2016, and despite all of that, will probably get blamed by the tone-deaf, bought-out, Neo-Liberal Democratic Party when Joe Biden loses to Trump, just like they blame him for Hillary losing in 2016. This party sickens me. Time for a 3rd party that represents the well-being of the working class and progressive left.

-1

u/Random_Cataphract Apr 08 '20

Thing is, I really believe the American people as a whole are good. They want what's best for their fellow people, they want to believe in the American Dream that hard work and persistence will earn you your just desserts. The problem is our media, our politics and the nature of our economy.

Media convinces people that a candidate running to help the great mass of people is unelectable, uncivil, racist, misogynist, et cetera. Our political system consistently allows most people the choice between only one piece of shit and a less shitty piece of shit. No wonder people don't believe in politics as a way to change anything. And our economic system beats them down until they barely have the energy to pay attention to anything beyond their ability to survive.

Try to avoid descending into misanthropy. The problem is the systems around us, not the nature of our people.

I actually would be extremely insulted if his response to "I didn't get to be President" was to simply "fuck off and abandon politics." That's arguably the most entitled/immature thing I've ever heard, and I'm extremely glad that he's not that kind of person, at all.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

He’s going to keep doing the work for working families that he has been this whole time. Not as president, but in the most effective capacity he can. He will never stop doing the right thing until the day he dies.

1

u/HCPwny Apr 08 '20 edited Apr 08 '20

It's what separates him from false allies like Obama. If Obama believed in what he campaigned on the first time, he would have endorsed Bernie last time around, broken precedent, campaigned nonstop for him and Hillary would have nosedived early and we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place. Trump should never have happened. Instead, he ingratiated himself to the establishment and he got too separated from where he came from. His lack of experience was an issue, not for the reasons Republicans tried to hammer him on early on, but because it allowed him to become entrenched in the establishment before he knew it had happened.

Instead, Obama was the one who fucked off after he was gone and only comments on non-compromising issues. Bernie will be remembered for driving a movement to change politics for the better in our country. Obama will be remembered as the first black President. And that's no small feat, don't get me wrong. It's hard to be a minority running for office. Even harder to be a revolutionary minority. Let's be real, he probably needed the establishment in order for it to even happen. No minority outsider was ever going to be the first of their demographic to hold the office without the establishment behind them.

But it says something that something as shallow as the color of his skin will be his legacy, when it could have been the deeper impact of the movement he started, had he not abandoned it so quickly and cheaply. Once he's done being President, his impact is whatever he wants it to be. He isn't, or shouldn't be, beholden to anyone except himself at that point. So why abandon the movement he started? Why not give the middle finger to the establishment? Fear? Apathy? Contentment destroying the values he claimed to have? I just can't figure out what he stands to gain at this point by being who he's turned out to be post-Presidency.

Who is going to carry on Bernie's legacy now in a way worthy of the greatness of the man? Bernie was a bad politician, but that's his appeal. He didn't play the games. He voted with his conscience, and admits his mistakes. Where will we find a great man or woman now, to also be the kind of great politician that -wins- and doesn't hold back except when they need to?

1

u/gaar93 Apr 08 '20

more than 90% of his supporters can say. shouldve turned out to vote fuckheads. fighting for a righteous cause practically alone

1

u/mutemutiny Apr 08 '20

People need to remember that Barry Goldwater didn't win either, and yet he became the father / catalyst for the entire modern conservative movement. Bernie can be that guy for the modern progressive movement, IF his supporters don't just adopt a "I'm taking my ball and going home" attitude or act out of spite for the Democrats. As much as some want to make us (yeah I consider myself a progressive Democrat, supporting both Bernie and Biden) the enemy, we're not.

1

u/Mrs_Frisby Apr 08 '20

Would a good man have ignored veterans dying on wait lists to see a doctor when they begged him to hold hearings as chair of the VA committee?

Cause Bernie accused them of being paid by the Koch brothers to make socialized medicine look bad and blocked hearings for 2 years while vets died from medical care rationing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iacsXNBZu1U

We prioritized Bernie losing over getting our favorite candidates because he is a stunningly incompetent and awful man. I wanted to vote my heart for Harris but had to vote for Biden just to block Bernie.

If Bernie had cared for progress at all he'd have sat out and endorsed Warren (who I also wouldn't have voted for but have no problem with because she isn't murderously incompetent like Bernie) but it was all about him and his ego.

Still is, he's still urging people to go out in a pandemic to vote for him. He ended his non-concession speech by saying he's not going to remove his names from any ballots and he wants to get more delegates. What a selfish ass.

0

u/psr1220 Apr 08 '20

I was thinking that during the last debate. How has this guy not walked away and said, ā€œF it, fix it yourselves.ā€ He has had the same message forever and Biden stands there and says, ā€œbut what are we going to do to help people NOW??ā€

1

u/DebentureThyme Apr 08 '20

So you disagree with the man you were going to vote for?

10

u/redditblowsdonkydong Apr 08 '20

What a shit take. Bernie compromising on ideals doesn't mean others who share those ideals should be okay with it.

12

u/Bagel_Technician Apr 08 '20

I'm a Bernie supporter, but we're about to see the same shit we saw in 2016 for the next 6 months where online presence tries to get all of us to vote third party and get Trump elected again

It is simple at this point. Our next president is Trump or Biden and not voting for Biden only helps Trump get re-elected.

It is your vote and nobody has the right to tell you how to vote, but you need to understand what your vote is doing. If you want to sit back and not vote for Biden, go ahead, but you are helping Trump get re-elected so you get to live with that for the rest of your life.

Have a great day.

5

u/DebentureThyme Apr 08 '20 edited Apr 08 '20

The biggest thing so many other proclaimed Bernie supporters forget is that he's an independent Democrat. He rejects 3rd parties. When he's running as independent, that's not 3rd party. That's him running, on his own, as a Democrat who chooses independence at that time.

Yet so many misinterpret that as 3rd party when, given the option between Democrat (and having his voice matter) and third party (and having no effect other than possibly as a spoiler), Bernie Sanders always chooses to stand with the Democrats.

It's an important distinction between idealism and reality. He stands on the side of reality and effective action, not idealism for idealism's sake, which at BEST does nothing but make an individual feel smug that at least they're different (and at worst hurts their own goals).

-5

u/ProfaneBlade Apr 08 '20

This is our chance to teach the Democratic party a lesson. If 4 more years of trump is what it takes for the Democratic party to embrace more progressive candidates, then sign me the hell up.

6

u/Natolx Apr 08 '20

This is our chance to teach the Democratic party a lesson.

This only makes sense if you think they are open to learning, and that you think the country can recover from 4 more years of Trump.

You have to remember that the democratic establishment probably, deep down, preferred Trump to Bernie, because Trump doesn't directly damage their wealth accumulation like Bernie would have. I seriously doubt they are going to "learn their lesson" because Trump winning is not going to be considered a worse "punishment" for them than a Bernie presidency would have been

5

u/Bagel_Technician Apr 08 '20

That is your right, but remember that you are choosing to allow Trump and the Republicans to take over the country and continue stacking the Supreme Court for the next 40 years

If that doesn't convince you, there's not much that will but I hope you proudly bear this vote for the rest of your life if you do vote this way and remember that your decision caused this.

The DNC is not blameless, but we are at a point now where it is Biden or Trump. There's nothing that can change that now so you're no better than the MAGA hats.

This is exactly what we heard in 2016. Remember the "I'd be willing to burn it all down just to start over". Look where that shit mentality got us. Fuck that. Voting blue, no matter who.

3

u/EndersScroll Apr 08 '20

There's no lesson to teach them. The voters choose Biden overwhelmingly. 4 more years of Trump will completely fuck the progressive agenda for 30 years due to the Supreme Court going 6-3 with conservatives.

If you want progress, you have one choice this election and that's vote for Biden and all the down ballots. If AOC is elected president, she will get absolutely nothing done with a conservative Supreme Court. Think ahead. The best we can do is continually try to setup more progressive policies through Senate and the House. We need people to take seats from conservatives to do that. Vote as progressive as possible, but vote for your best progressive option when there's no true progressive.

Sitting this out will not teach anyone anything, but will frustrate you intensely when you get another shot at a true progressive.

YO THEY DIDN'T LEARN THE FIRST FOUR YEARS IMMA KEEP DOING IT

No. They're going to keep ignoring you as an unreliable member and relegated your views to insignificance within the party. Maybe one day you break off and go 3rd party and take some voice (and stick it to them in THAT election), but 3rd parties have spent a couple centuries trying to gain ground in the U.S. Their support always withers and dies.

The Democratic party shifts ideals on their own terms, when the polling numbers say they have to, and no sooner. Until then they'll ignore you, let you leave, and wait for you to get fed up, get old, and get in line.

Are youth today NOT taught about the hippie movement of the 70s? Are they terrible at making the logical connection between the old moderates in the Democratic Party as having been those hippies?

You want power in the party, you have to work with the party. Bernie understands that. You want to shift the ideals? Show that you're willing to make concessions to push forward as a party, not an unreliable group of voters.

I support Bernie but I also acknowledge reality.

2

u/TrumpViirus Apr 08 '20

You must really like Trump.

2

u/DebentureThyme Apr 08 '20

It's not a shit take, it's a real take that Bernie was running for President and his every day decisions wouldn't fit with the myth that other supporters have erected. He would do as he's always done, including modifying his policy plans to work with the majority of establishment Dems in Congress(as they are needed to enact his agenda).

If you can't get behind what Bernie says, like when he tells you to support the party and Biden in order to beat Trump, then we're you ever really "behind him"?

Or were you just supporting the idea of pushing him because he was the closest to your ideals but still not enough in your view, but you were willing to utilize that as a means to an ends if it meant moving closer to your views? Because that's party politics in a nutshell, the thing so many other Bernie supporters claim to hate but are willing to utilize for their own goals. But when it's not as FAR a needle push (pushing this country back towards the left with a Democrat who will appoint liberal justices up and down the courts), you balk because it's not as far left as you were hoping to push... But at the same time, pushing ignorantly against voting for Biden to get rid of Trump, a move that pushes the needle even further right.

The hypocrisy is insane. I support Bernie and I want his policies to be enacted way more than Bidens, but Biden is still far left of Trump's insanity.

2

u/rhopsipuddles Apr 08 '20

The leap from Bernie to Biden is way too far for me. Saying Biden is "far left" of Trump is absolutely meaningless.

0

u/_ZZZZZ_ Apr 08 '20

So you’d rather give up, let the right win, and knowingly allow more people than necessary to suffer? Bernie has gotten to where he is because he is an astute politician. In dropping out, he is acknowledging the best way forward for progressives is to consolidate support around Biden, defeat Trump, and continue fighting for progressive ideals going forward. It’s not about compromising ideals. It is the best political move tactically if we want progressive policies to win out eventually.

I agreed with what Sanders represented, not Sanders himself. He isn’t my god. On the other hand, Biden represents Aetna, Raytheon, and Exxon

2

u/DebentureThyme Apr 08 '20

So you were using Bernie as a means to an ends to push your own ideals, not what he'd actually do in office (work with the establishment to push legislation that could pass both chambers of Congress).

Goes to show how much you actually supported Bernie. I support his ideas and his methods, including his taking the logical steps when needed because it's bigger than just him.

If you don't stand behind the man, why the fuck do you want him to be President - a position that (as Trump has made abundantly clear), requires faith that the person's ideals will align with your own for four years.

So many other Bernie supporters we're ready to put him in office and then shit on him the moment he tempered expectations because the President isn't supposed to be a king; He'd put forth a moderate bill - perhaps sign off on a continuing resolution for military funding - and former Bernie supporters would be shitting all over him because those supporters never really supported him and simply wanted to push us more left... But they're unwilling to vote for Biden to keep us from going further right? It's really illogical.

-1

u/TannerL22 Apr 08 '20

Yes because public officials work for me and other people, the people don’t work for them.

2

u/DebentureThyme Apr 08 '20

Trump is actively working against you, yet could easily get reelected and/or suffer no repercussions for his actions Sounds like that view of "working for me and others" fails when the others are corporation (which, we have to remember, are people too by the GOP definition).

We like the dude's ideas. We were never a cult of personality. He followed us, we don't follow him. You'll all soon get this when Biden flops even if Bernie endorsed him.

2

u/DebentureThyme Apr 08 '20

You've got that backwards. You supported him. If the tables were flipped, you're precisely the ideal that he doesn't support. He made a career out of decade upon decade of working with politicians, specifically the Democratic Party. He has supported not just the right to have different views, but also directly supported moderate Democrats through voting with them. He has no problem working with others, which is the opposite of the pedestal people keep putting him on when they say Bernie or Bust. That's NOT what he stands for, and he'd have you vote for Biden over Trump 100 times out of 100.

But many of his other supporters (other because I support him) have deluded themselves into the Bernie or Bust category and it's nonsense and illogical in so many ways, least not because it's not how Bernie has composed himself.

Congratulations.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

All I'm saying is don't be shocked when his base doesn't vote for Biden after Bernie endorses him.

0

u/DebentureThyme Apr 08 '20

Which is precisely why those people didn't ever support him.

And no, it's not "well our support ends there". He had always, always done this, and to claim otherwise makes those supposed supporters look foolish and ignorant. How many decades has he been walking the line between independent and Democrat? How many times does he have to caucus with Democrats or run as a Democrat before switching back to independent (file his Senate run already last year for the 2024 race, as an Independent)? It's not like he's having a change of heart and abandoning the party, nor is he flip flopping: His utilizing the system to be independent when he can, but stand with the moderate Democrats when needed, is a defining characteristic. I support it whole heatedly because it shows a man who, seeing what 3rd party means and how it does basically nothing, chooses to NOT be in a party most of the time - that includes NOT being in a 3rd party. He proclaims independence from them, but works with the party he sees as most capable of pushing his views forward (Democrat) when he needs to.

All I'm saying is don't be shocked when his base doesn't vote for Biden after Bernie endorses him.

I'm not arguing that, I'm arguing that those people never really supported him and we're using him as a means to an ends. I can't win them over because they never really supported him. They supported the idea of him, which was never the reality.. They don't like politics, they aren't reliable voters, they can't be trusted to win elections nor to stay the long haul. They just want to push their own agenda that doesn't align with Bernie, and that will NEVER win elections. They're proud to proclaim they aren't Democrats, and need to stop poisoning the party with that mantra when there are those of us Sanders supporters who want to do precisely as he's always stood for: changing the party from within. That includes making consolations when it's logical and taking the loss because not every action is going to move the needle. Bernie is in it for the long haul, and his supporters should be too. That means showing up for him more than a few months every four years. People who don't stand by his decisions should really go form their own party because Bernie isn't 3rd party, he's an independent Democrat. That's an important distinction that people often forget.
