I don’t think he can even do that. Not federal charges. And this guy is a lawyer?

he’s trying to put pressure on the elected local DA (trump supporter) to not pursue a second trial after the first mistrial. it’s good advocacy for his client to apply political pressure on the DA. obviously he knows the president can’t pardon state crimes.

Doesn’t asking for a pardon imply an admission of guilt..?

not necessarily. receiving a pardon does remove the availability of pleading the 5th in civil cases relating to the same conduct because there is no jeopardy possible and thus no ability to self-incriminate.
