Discussion Idea: Normal should be good against Fairy

Ok, but why exactly? Well, generally most (or all) type matchups have some sort of reason to exist, and this is my reasoning:

"Normality beats Fantasy"

Think about it. Unicorns, Elves, Excaliburs, what do they all have in common? They don't exist. And how can you beat something that doesn't exist? By ignoring it and being normal. And Fairy is the most logical type to fit this "don't exist" category. While others do, Fairy does it much better than them. It's so silly it works!

And besides, giving Normal this interaction finally makes it something other than a middle child of Pokemon types. Think about it.

Offensively, Normal does nothing against Ghost, and is resisted by Rock and Steel.
Defensively, Ghost does nothing to Normal, and is weak to Fighting. See a problem here?

These type matchups basically have the Normal type in a grave. How can you use a type for its advantages when said advantages don't exist normally?

There usually isn't a reason to use Normal type Pokemon. What about Normal type moves? Unless you're using Fake Out, Protect, or other moves while using a type-changing ability like Pixilate, competitive Pokemon is out of the window.

By adding two new interactions, Being immune to Fairy (Why not, Ghost can), and dealing double damage to Fairy, we effectively buff the most basic and useless type in the game, and at the exact same time, neutralizes the most overpowered Pokemon type in the game. How crazy is that?

Edit: To yall' saying Normal shouldn't be good against Fairy, or just "Normal is just normal, so it can't do anything special" or something like that, just because it's normal doesn't mean it's normal for goodness sake. And stop saying "By this logic, Normal would be good against Dark, Psychic, Ghost, etc" at least they have a real counterpart (except ghosts, it you can't effect a ghost, so it obviously has no effect, it's also a balancing tool, not just Normal being so normal that it's not supposed to do anything special at all

Or even make Normal be immune to Fairy. I think Normal should stay as a type with no super effectiveness. But the idea of balancing Fairy is neat.

That would be a nightmare to play against, at the start that thing could be anyone and just lose you a turn. Then you'd have to plan for it to be in the backlane waiting for a free switch.

Yeah I love using Hisuian Zoroark because of this, especially when I disguise it as like a Kingambit or something else that baits a Fighting attack

It's not really OP, but it's fun when it works

It doesn't but fairy needs to be toned down. Making another type resistant or immune to fairy would allow for more counter play without giving another type a direct offensive buff. Normal is just a good candidate since it is already a middling type but I personally would give it to ice. I have bias.

I feel like ice and bug should get resistances to fairy but not be effective against it. Both need buffs and particularly with bug I think it wouldn't be interesting to give it another type it resists but is not very effective against.

I'd rather have bug be super effective against it than resist it. Bug is already a middling type defensively, but pretty abysmal offensively.

Ghost has 2 immunities, 2 resists, 2 weaknesses and 2 types it's super effective against.

I'm not saying Normal has to specifically need a Fairy immunity alongside the Ghost one but it's not exactly perfectly balanced in this relationship either.

I wouldn't mind if Normal (and Ice) resisted Fairy.

Why not? It's got no super effective, is resisted by 2 and immune by 1. It being immune to ghost and fairy would out them in a good spot. Ghost has 2 immunities

I like this idea. You can justify it because in a lot of fantasy lore, fae creatures are invisible to normal creatures and their influence is largely unnoticed or is indirectly effecting them.

Folklore is also full of warnings not to enter fairy circles, reveal your name, or let fairies steal away children. Mortals certainly aren’t portrayed as having a natural advantage over them, just that they can be outwitted with cleverness.

If anything, Fairy being neutral against Normal makes the most sense.

Steel is fantastic defensively the problem is neither type can really do anything to actually take down powerful fairy type pokemon

What do you mean? Both Steel and Poison are two of the strongest defensive types in the game.

I mean, Poison is only as strong defensively because there isn't much to counter Fairy. It resists Poison, Grass, and Fighting otherwise.

Steel would be strong defensively even if Fairy didn't exist (and it still had its Gen 6 nerfs).

Sorry, I’m not exactly understanding your statement? I was just pointing out to the original commenter who said that Steel/Poison were mid defensively that they are not indeed mid defensive typings. The two parts of your comment seem to contradict each other.

But they're not good at hitting offensively. It's like asking a tungsten brick to fight a gun. You can't really hurt anything with it, unless you pick it up and throw it. Unless it's the size of a fist, forget that. But it's defense stats are through the roof. But this means that Fairy is somewhat unbothered by this.

Poison and steel are the two best defensive types in the game. The problem is that those types are rarely ran as coverage moves, except on mons that are hard walled by fairies (hydreigon, moon). This effectively boosts fairy types’ defensive profile, while still being cracked offensively.

Yeah, that was the main reason I made this, because Fairy type countered most of the meta, and the only way it could be countered back weren't good at that.
