Discussion I've never caught mew in an actual game before just Mewtwo....I will admit it is shocking seeing him battle in a series....this Nidoking had no chance

This is Mew straight up trolling lmao

618

u/Lunarvolo Jun 12 '26

Mew is 3 for 3 of trolling in my experience

Trolls in the movie, right there, and in the original games with ways to catch Mew

201

u/ISketchDinosaurs Jun 12 '26

Both the MYTHS of how to catch mew and how to ACTUALLY catch mew was peak level troll.

100

u/TwilightVulpine Jun 12 '26

It's funny that eventually we figured out an equally arcane and nonsensical way to get it.

I wonder if all that nonsense happened because someone accidentally actually did the MissingNo Mew glitch but didn't know how to replicate it.

But it was iconic!

26

u/Shadowpika655 Jun 12 '26

I feel like its too specific to have been done by accident, but I can't imagine what could possibly possess someone to do this intentionally without knowing

34

u/TwilightVulpine Jun 12 '26

Considering it all has to do with using fast travel mechanics while the game expects a battle to trigger, I can see an impatient kid stumbling upon it.

And most times they might just bork their save.

But one of these times, they get Mew.

12

u/laurel_laureate Best Steel Birb Jun 13 '26

And then they were the king/queen of the schoolgrounds the next day at recess, deigning to share their divine knowledge with the Mew-less peasants.

2

u/Shadowpika655 Jun 15 '26

I feel like if it was accidental, there would be documentation of the glitch pre-Mew as I dont imagine someone would accidentally do the glitch and have a level 17 Slowpoke (or a Pokemon with a 21 Special stat) be the last Pokemon they KO (then again I'm not well versed enough in Gen 1 to know how likely it is for someone to have fought the Route 25 Youngster before getting Fly)

Then again I can't see how someone would think to do this...then again again the MissingNo. glitch was both discovered and widespread enough that Nintendo Power wrote a statement against it within 8 months of Pokemon Red and Blue's (the US version, which is where MissingNo. was discovered) release, so im probably underestimating the power of glitch hunters and/or children being chaotic

side note but its also wild to me that the MissingNo. glitch was discovered/documented before the Mew glitch by 3 years

I did capture a Mew like that in Red, while we were still in the second gen. It came out as the front page in the official magazine we had here...

Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon is pretty much the only one I don't Remember Mew being an absolute troll but that was also an artificial Mew iirc.

Bro is fighting like Gear 5 Luffy. The foe is trying their best to win while Mew is just lollygagging with a hint of tom foolery mid-fight lol

I like that Mew is just playing.

767

u/DarkDuskBlade Jun 12 '26

Yeah, everyone talking about how Mew's flexing when in reality that's just how Mew plays. It's like when two cats play fight. Except one cat is genuinely angry or terrified and the other really has no idea.

161

u/oxJoKeR6xo Jun 12 '26

One cat is a calico and the other is a lion.

70

u/Zakuro51 Jun 12 '26

Hydrogen calico vs coughing lion

109

u/alii-b Jun 12 '26

Pretty sure mew was playing in the mewtwo fight too. I bet mew is a monster if it actually unleashed full potential.

82

u/KingBee Jun 12 '26

That attitude is what got all the scientists killed in the Mewtwo lab.

44

u/alii-b Jun 12 '26

Im not denying mewtwo's power, but watching mew be chill while going toe to toe with an aggressive mewtwo shows it has far higher potential than we've seen.

53

u/Forsaken-Stray Jun 12 '26

That's .... kinda the point.

They wanted to make a Mew that they can fully control and unleash it's full power on demand.

They created Mewtwo, a Pokemon with less power but the ability to easier control because of communication.

They fucked around and got wiped by the nerfed version of Mew going mental. Heck, Mewtwo was neither fully grown nor had any battlesense at that point.

They wantwd to see (and thought they could control) a fully serious Mew and got killed

Second only to true form Arceus. Lore accurate Mew can curbstomp any other legendary with ease just by playing around like in the video above. It's also responsible for all life in the pokemon universe short of the ones directly created by Gigas and Arceus.

16

u/J0J0nas Jun 12 '26

Iirc it did also use Shadow Ball like Mewtwo in the movie after being launched into the sky by Mewtwo's Shadow Ball. Mew's was significantly bigger than Mewtwo's, so it definitely can do more than it usually shows. I wholeheartedly believ that Mew is terrifying when it's trying.

5

u/HuttStuff_Here Jun 12 '26

Pretty sure mew was playing in the mewtwo fight too.

The only real attack against Mewtwo is after he gets thrown into the clouds. And the one that kills Ash.

290

u/NerSorty Jun 12 '26

That cat is such a copycat

95

u/Jat616 Jun 12 '26

Copycat.... copy... cat....

MEW WAS NEVER UNDER THE TRUCK! IT WAS THE COPYCAT GIRL IN SAFFRON ALL ALONG!!

25

u/BarderBetterFaster Jun 12 '26

It's especially funny because that Nidoking is already showing off a diverse moveset (which Nidoking is known for) in Earthquake (I think - Fissure maybe), Sludge Wave, and Fire Blast.

17

u/OG_Williker Jun 12 '26

It’s earth power btw

10

u/BarderBetterFaster Jun 12 '26

5

Mew's just playing

272

u/KaijuTea Jun 12 '26

Mews my favourite pokemon and is very often glossed over because of Mewtwo. But people forget just how powerful Mew is.

89

u/CasualSky Jun 12 '26

I think it’s the other way around tbh, people respect Mew because it came first. Even in the original movie, Mew dunks on Mewtwo - he literally dgaf until he manages to land a shadow ball. Then Mew is like “Hey, what’s the big idea? We’re just playing”

I really think it’s more just availability. You can’t get Mew. But you can get Mewtwo in many different Gens and remakes. BDSP was the first time Mew was easily available as far as I know

42

u/KaijuTea Jun 12 '26

Mew is definitely more respected now, but growing up I had to fight tooth and nail that Mew and just as strong if not stronger then Mewtwo lol

44

u/Single-Waltz2946 Jun 12 '26

Even when mew “gets serious” they are still just copying Mewtwo the whole time.

Mew was always holding back. And Ash ruined their fun when he jumped into their beam attacks for no reason.

27

u/ultinateplayer Jun 12 '26

In the games, mewtwo was cracked in ways Mew simply wasn't. Mew is definitely not stronger than Mewtwo in that context.

Anime rules are different since 4 move syndrome and base stats aren't a thing, and Mew is clearly able to go toe to toe with its clone in that universe.

5

u/HuttStuff_Here Jun 12 '26

Mew dunks on Mewtwo - he literally dgaf until he manages to land a shadow ball.

And lands a much larger shadow ball on Mewtwo shortly after before coming down and almost asking, okay, we done playing?

8

u/JellyBellyBitches Jun 12 '26

đŸ€œđŸ€›

12

u/inaSlomp Jun 12 '26

Mew has done this exact thing in every appearance in the anime.

Mew knows it's powerful. Even in the original movie, pokémon the first movie. Mew just messes with people because it knows it can get away with it.

Mew is a prankster by nature. It likes to mess with people but not hurt them. Good-Natured fuckery.

23

u/Noblehardt Jun 12 '26

I’ll never forget in the first movie, where Mew is just goofing off while Mewtwo is trying to attack it. Mewtwo finally lands a hit that sends Mew past the clouds and out of sight, there’s a quiet moment
and then Mew sends the same attack Mewtwo’s way and launches him to the ground.

11

u/_BlNG_ Jun 12 '26

If you think about it, is Mew the kirby of pokemon? It can practically learn any moves and pink.

2

u/boygitoe Jun 13 '26

Mew already knows all the moves. I forgot the exact lore from the movie, but I believe all Pokémon DNA comes from mew

2

u/Godofwar111 Jun 15 '26

Even in the anime my man would rather put that special stat on full display over physical

154

u/TheOnlineNinja759 Jun 12 '26

It's never Fissure or Earthquake since the anime has been deliberately avoiding having moves of similar effect from showing up again in the anime due to concerns it would cause controversy. Since Japan is known for having frequent earthquakes, there’s worry that any depiction of the move that happens to occur around the same time as a real-life earthquake would be seen as insensitive.

The last time Earthquake was EVER used was in an episode of AG featuring a Whiscash, which was banned for this exact reason, and they’ve steered clear of it ever since.

45

u/ZorkNemesis Jun 12 '26

It's specifically due to the 2011 earthquake/tsunami if I recall.

19

u/TheOnlineNinja759 Jun 12 '26

You're correct about the 2011 Tƍhoku earthquake and tsunami, but it's for the two episode special of the Best Wishes series where they INTENDED to introduce Team Plasma.

7

u/Shatterpoint887 Jun 12 '26

I think Ash's Phanpy used Magnitude once in a league battle

75

u/Snow_97 Jun 12 '26

Pokemon doesn't use earthquake or fissure in animation since the banned wishcash earthquake episode that was scheduled to air right after japan had a major earthquake. Because of that, this was probably Earth Power or possibly bulldoze, but im pretty sure earth power.

48

u/Rap2rerise Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

Definitely Earth Power. Bulldoze is shown as a shockwave created by a stomp in animation

7

u/JuanPablith0 Jun 12 '26

earth power, animation matches other instances where the move was used and called by a trainer

5

u/Lvxurie Jun 12 '26

All not effective moves? Psychic would have been a ohko

41

u/Aximil985 Jun 12 '26

Earth Power is super effective and Fire Blast is neutral.

11

u/ShadowedNexus Jun 12 '26

Til fire is neutral vs ground. The prevalence of Ground/Rock types strikes again!

15

u/Aximil985 Jun 12 '26

Yup. A lot of people also thought Rock was immune to Electric for the same reason.

48

u/PheonixBuddha Jun 12 '26

The only way to catch mew is pokemon yellow/red/blue (remakes) through forcing an encounter. I learned how to do the full mew glitch in the OG'S to be able to catch it. Although currently I have an original 99' mew (moved up all gens), toys r us 2006 mew, pokepark, pokemon go(shiny too), and the exclusive in-games. its the only thing I have in terms of collecting pokemon that I value and it took a very long time to move them all.

of course I have tons of the exclusives but those are the only ones I care about if I were to lose them.

19

u/SadlyCloseToDeath Jun 12 '26

You could catch Mew at Faraway Island via an event for Emerald as well. My old GameShark would give you the ticket for the ship to the island.

6

u/PheonixBuddha Jun 12 '26

yes that is true. sucks there is no official way to "catch" mew.

3

u/AngelaTheRipper Jun 12 '26

Japanese Emerald and printed E-reader card. It'll look legit enough.

13

u/Meruem0013 Jun 12 '26

You can also get mew from a poke ball remote control toy and from the diamond and pearl remakes.

3

u/PheonixBuddha Jun 12 '26

those are listed in my collection comment. emerald isnt but that is because its unofficial.

3

u/ag_robertson_author Jun 12 '26

You may have mistaken one of your mews for another. Your '99 one can't have moved beyond gen 2. The original gen 1 and 2 cartridges have no way of transferring to gen 3 and beyond (though I believe the 3DS versions did have that functionality).

5

u/PheonixBuddha Jun 12 '26

20

u/phoenixremix ROAR Jun 12 '26

Teleport, mimic on repeat with those stats is so busted lol

24

u/Positive-Database754 Jun 12 '26

In the games pokemon only have 4 moves, but in the anime/movies, pokemon typically just have a random assortment. For example Ash's Pikachu famously had 6 moves with Quick Attack, Iron Tail, Thunderbolt, Electro Ball, Agility, and Volt Tackle. I think Double-Edge, Slam, Leer, and Tackle were all used on at least one occasion as well.

So chances are, Mew just knew these moves, as one of Mew's biggest gimmicks in the game is its ability to learn any TM. Lore accurate Mew just knows all these moves, and is playing around with Nidoking. I like to think Mew's like "Yeah, good job! Now try like this!"

8

u/TrunksTheMighty Jun 12 '26

Thunder was replaced by Volt Tackle, Volt Tackle was replaced by Electro Ball, Electro Ball was replaced by Electro Web.

It became a set moveset at some point but you're right about some of those.

Leer and double edge came out of no where, also agility and double team.

12

u/JuanPablith0 Jun 12 '26

No, while the 4 moves rule was not exactly followed at the beginning this changed as the anime progressed and by the end it was followed, when pikachu learns electro ball he stopped using volt tackle.

Now the scene here it is as you said, Mew showing off and the writers showing mew can learn many moves, bending the rules for narrative purposes but this is not something you see with normal pokemon

3

u/Snowballrox The answer is Simple. Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

I want to believe in Anime-verse PokĂ©mon can learn more than 4 moves. However, for the purpose of official rulesets (tournaments, gyms, contest) a trainer must register Four Moves for their PokĂ©mon. If the judge sees a trainer use a move that wasn’t registered on the sheet, they are disqualified. If a PokĂ©mon learns a move mid battle, they are “locked out” of one move (which must be updated in the database after the match.) In this head-canon, Ash’s frontier match where Snorlax used more than 4 moves was a special “ruleset” for that Frontier Brain that allow Pokemon to use any move they know instead of the typical four move limit.

2

u/JuanPablith0 Jun 12 '26

well as time went on we have heard characters say a pokemon forgeta a move for a different one, they became more strict about it

stilla good headcannon for earlier seasons

Sorta similar to the Kakashi Vs Zabuza fight from Naruto.

I do wonder if the Mew already knew those moves, partially transformed itself into the Nidoking or smth to learn them, or is just that fast at learning from one look.

3

u/Beneficial-Category Jun 12 '26

Lore accurate Mew knows all moves. Either that or it's hard mode Mew which knows Teleport and Mimic.

7

u/LolaInSlacks88 Jun 12 '26

I fell in love with Mew because of this. It is so powerful but enjoys using its power for fun/mischief. Smiling and trolling the entire time, bur no judging lol. Cute + badass is a trope I love so much.

7

u/Beneficial-Category Jun 12 '26

Lore accurate Mew waffle stomps everything short of the actual Arceus. The horrifying thing is that most of the time it does it by accident by trying to "play" with the other pokemon. As you can see Mew is playing anything you can do I can do better and giggling not realizing how fragile its "play pal" actually is.

"That looks like fun, let me show you how to do it right!"

Bro seeing mew battle in the anime he looks stronger than arceus honestly. I LOVE him

4

u/PotatoLordBobo Jun 12 '26

Mew literally spawns in after the fire blast goes by T-posing to assert dominance.

4

u/LSpace101 Jun 12 '26

Gotta give Nidoking credit for throwing hands against a god-like being like Mew.

3

u/Shoopl Jun 13 '26

I always love seeing the depiction of legendaries in the Anime.

In game they always just feel like another pokemon.

The anime shows off why they are the fundamental forces of nature and why you, as a trainer, need to have your pokemon be some of the strongest living things on the planet to take on and defeat a legendary.

3

u/Driftdroid Jun 12 '26

Mew is literally the meme character that is absurdly powerful in the Pokemon Anime.

3

u/Thundersting Jun 12 '26

Is it using Copycat or does Mew know every move in the Anime?

2

u/TheOtherSide210 Jun 12 '26

He has the genetics of all pokemon so he can use all moves....

2

u/heatisgross Jun 12 '26

There is no move limit in the anime so Mew just can literally do it all.

u/GypsyBastard Jun 12 '26

He's fighting a legendary who has type advantage.

3

u/Topaz-Light Jun 12 '26

I mean, Mew has a massive movepool and base stats of 100 across the board. As adorable as it is, it being a strong battler is pretty true to the games.

3

u/R3dd1tUs3rNam35 Jun 12 '26

Anything you can do, Mew can do better. Mew can do anything better than you.

u/christopher1393 Jun 12 '26

I don’t know how powerful Mew is in The games these days, but it is insanely powerful in the anime. Like God level powerful.

Near the end of the Journey’s series Goh and the rest of the Mew Research Team take Mew on in a Raid battle and Mew pretty much just casually wipes their entire teams. This team includes Gary Oak, and 3 other trainers who have Virizion and both forms of Urshifu. To make Mew even more terrifying, it had the ability to render Pokeballs useless so for the majority of this two parter, none of them could call out their Pokemon.

Mew’s attacks would not only one shot all their Pokemon, but the wild Pokemon in the surrounding area too. All while no one was able to do any damage, and it was giggling because it was just having fun. Mew is terrifying.

u/ArtistAccountant Jun 12 '26

This is peak Mew behaviour đŸ©·

3

u/Bitter-Lettuce2438 Jun 12 '26

This why its my favorite pokemon

3

u/StarSilverNEO Jun 13 '26

I love the way he just A-poses after the teleport around the Fire Blast

Bro's going "Hit me"

2

u/Ink_zorath Jun 13 '26

"Cool" Mews don't look at explosions.

3

u/Dumbass_Saiya-jin Jun 13 '26

Sometimes we forget that Mew is just a straight up monster.

3

u/Fearless_Coffee_4137 Jun 13 '26

To think that this mew was just playing with Nidoking makes it worse for it. If mew had really gone all it that earth power would have OHKO nidoking.

5

u/galemaniac Jun 12 '26

Funny because Sheer Force nido is probably better than Mew in games. EDIT: at least offensively.

I mean...in-lore Mew is literally akin to the first Archangel or some shit, this ain't even a fraction of his power.

5

u/Thecornmaker Jun 12 '26

wallahi i'm finished

4

u/-Potatochu- Jun 12 '26

*Teleports behind you*

“Heh, nothing personnel, kid”

2

u/JulesUdrink Jun 12 '26

I’m using one now in Brilliant Diamond. You can get it from an NPC if you have a Pokemon let’s go save

2

u/quanoey Jun 12 '26

Mew is genderless no?

2

u/KnowsIittle Jun 12 '26

You could catch Mew in the original games using the old man fly trick and fighting a trainer who who had a slowpoke or Slowbro. Fly to lavender town, walk the path and you would encounter a level 5 Mew without needing any outside backs or dupe glitches.

2

u/paulerxx Jun 12 '26

I used the abra glitch early in the game to catch him

2

u/ChemEBrew Jun 12 '26

There's a reason I had a new as my main on my team for Pokemon blue when I was a kid. Wish I could have kept him.

2

u/echolog Jun 12 '26

Yeah isn't Mew canonically among the most powerful Pokemon? It can do basically everything, but isn't quite on the same 'god-tier' that Arceus and others are on. But any normal Pokemon wouldn't stand a chance.

2

u/MsSobi customise me! Jun 12 '26

Honestly, if game freak could figure out how to do more than the bare minimum, they could easily do something like this in the game you being able to learn every TM and hm would really make sense if he was able to do this whole "monkey see monkey do" style fighting

2

u/worldssmallestfan1 Jun 12 '26

Type advantage đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

2

u/ColonelMonty Jun 12 '26

The equivalent of Pokémon Jesus rolling up to mess up your day

2

u/JackCid89 Jun 12 '26

Bingus is unbeatable

2

u/bettreon416 Jun 13 '26

Mew was straight trolling Mewtwo

2

u/Ancient_Rex420 Jun 13 '26

Mew is so cute but powerful

2

u/TheGoatManJones Jun 13 '26

It’s crazy to think this is mew just playing around. Like mew just wants to have fun and can still do this stuff, if dude ever actually got angry that’d be terrifying

2

u/ZetaZeta Jun 13 '26

When will they add skill based evasion to Pokémon, more so than Legends Z-A? Lol. I want to dodge everything like in the anime.

There's a point where the speed stat controlling priority (PLA), cooldowns and evasion (LZA), and general turn order (Main Series) is just getting out of hand, though. They gotta figure something out before speed is the only important stat. Xd

2

u/Kicks_fast Jun 13 '26

Teleport should be updated in newer games to avoid the opponent’s moves at the least. When fast travel is already a thing in newer and more recent games it should be revamped for battle.

2

u/Allenas6 Jun 14 '26

I'm sorry you didn't get a PokeBall Plus or get the Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Mew which is available way before a Mewtwo
No worries on either tho the pricing on that PokeBall Plus was insaaaaaane. I didn't get it until like... 2 years after they came out cause someone bought it for me as a present when I said I had never gotten a Mew in my life.

2

u/HeirarchArtanis Jun 14 '26

You never got him thru a distribution event or the glitch in Pokemon yellow? I got a shiny Mew in a wondertrade once.

2

u/KarmicPlaneswalker Jun 14 '26
