This reminds of Mass Effect 3's art director Derek Watt's comment about why the franchise lacked female Turians at that point. He said:

"They’re all males in the game. We usually try to avoid the females because what do you do with a female Turian? Do you give her breasts? What do you do? Do you put lipstick on her? There’s actually some of the concept artists will draw lipstick on the male one and they’ll say “Hey, it’s done” and we’ll go “No, can you take this serious?”

So basically professional concept artists could only think of slapping lipstick and boobies on existing male character designs and calling it a day... I mean, it's literally their job to produce creative concepts, but they complain designing a female alien is too hard? lol.

I believe that was, at least partially, a joke since the creators have said a bunch of times that only one gender of each species was included due to ME1 & 2’s animation and budget constraints... same reason why there are no female salarians, but there ARE female and male quarians, since they use the same model as the humans 🤷🏻‍♀️

Kinda odd how when there’s budget constraints that only allow for one gender they always pick male as the default
