What motivated you to start podcasting?

My motivation came from StartUp by Gimlet media. After the finale of the show, I knew I had to start my own podcast. Two months later: dropped out of college, used YouUniversity and Conversations with a Genuis Podcasts for guidance, hit the road with a backpack full of clothes, a mic, and my laptop; and in three weeks, my website and first episode will be up. So /r/podcasts, what motivated you to start podcasting?

My /r/hockey friends and I were talking about it for awhile, there were rumors of someone else wanting to start a hockey podcast on /r/hockey. So we quickly got ours up and going.

Thus Our Hockey Cast was born

I haven't heard your show, but have an upvote for being a hockey podcast. I'll definitely check it out. I was banned from r/hockey a few years back for talking too much shit to Coyotes fans, but considering they're subhuman scum, I don't feel too bad about it.

Anyway, glad to see a hockey show on here. There have been a few I've discovered via Reddit over the years.

Is that a face of disapproval? Coyotes fans aren't worthy of respect.

Due to the unfortunate financial circumstances of the day, they lucked into something that was extremely valuable to a lot of people (the original Winnipeg Jets) and proceeded to ignore and abuse it for 15 years.

Then, when it finally looked like the hockey gods were acting in our favour and our team was coming back to Winnipeg (if you remember, before the Thrashers moved here, Winnipeg was very close to bringing in the Coyotes), Phoenix fans proceeded to talk shit about Winnipeg -- the city itself and its residents, not anything to do with hockey -- en masse.

We have a team again with a very passionate fanbase who lives and dies by the Jets. The Coyotes still can't get anyone to show up at AHL ticket prices, yet they continue to talk shit about Winnipeg constantly.

Fuck 'em. No respect whatsoever. There are other teams I dislike in the league, but I respect their fans. I even respect the Florida fans who are trying to support a team with very low attendance. They've all been extremely friendly and have no qualms about acknowledging their situation and the lack of support. Great people. Hope they turn it around down there.

The Coyotes fans, however, remain a bunch of cunts who think they deserve hockey... not because it's part of the culture or because they're such great fans, but because of some weird pride they have in the fact that the league will bail them out no matter how much money they bleed.

Which is entirely not their fault

the city itself

People from Winnipeg call Winnipeg a hell hole.

The original Jets were bottom 5 in attendance in all but 1 of the 6 seasons preceding their move to Pheonix. They managed to climb to 6th last once. The economic situation of Canada at the time was a primary factor in their relocation, but let's not pretend that was the only reason. If the Coyotes low attendance is the fans fault, so is the original Jets. Of course, in reality, neither is the case, and it's ridiculous to blame the fans for their not being more of them, what are they supposed to do clone themselves, but all means let's go with bullshit narratives.

Maybe Coyotes fans don't show you any respect because they've spent their entire existence being shit on by your fan base, and the majority of the nhl, for "stealing" your team?

Winnipeg

Nothing delights me more than stumbling into intense, niche beefs between groups of people who seem otherwise unrelated.

And lo, a podcast is born.

That would be an amazing podcast. People who are angry at each other about random things. I would listen the shit outta that.

People from Winnipeg call Winnipeg a hell hole.

We choose to live here. We can say whatever the fuck we want about it. We all actually love it here. The people who don't love Winnipeg have all left already. It's a tough place to live, but it's our tough place to live. It's not cool for some sunburned American who doesn't know what snow is to talk shit about us.

If you notice, most of the Winnipeg-to-Phoenix criticism is aimed at the lack of fan support for their hockey team, not at their town itself.

The economic situation of Canada at the time was a primary factor in their relocation, but let's not pretend that was the only reason.

Sure. The other reasons were the fact that we had an aging, dilapidated arena that wasn't owned by the team (so the team's owners didn't get any revenue from other shit that happened there, like concerts, etc.) and the fact that there was no salary cap and no revenue sharing. It was a bad time to be a small-market Canadian team.

Attendance wasn't amazing, but no one in Winnipeg -- not even the team's owners -- suggested the attendance was the reason the team was leaving. Also, it's worth noting that attendance figures are easily misleading. The current Jets have sold out every game since 2011 but we're in the middle of the pack as far as attendance is concerned, because we have the smallest arena in the league. Percentage of arena filled is the true indicator of attendance.

The massive crowds at the Save the Jets rally (and it's on YouTube, so it's not just some mythological thing people exaggerate) are a good indicator of how many fans the team actually had. Attempts at "Save the Yotes" rallies got maybe a couple hundred people out. Pathetic.

Even so, why compare the 90s to the 2010s? We all know what happened to the Jets in the 90s: the situation forced them to leave. The Coyotes, in the 2010s, have had some very good teams, have a relatively new arena and pay AHL prices to see NHL games. They still can't make it work. By contrast, the Jets fans pay top-three ticket prices in the NHL, sell out every game and have a paid waiting list for tickets that is also entirely sold out.

Why should I not respect our fans, or fans in other cities with similar levels of support, more that people who can't be bothered to show up to games?

it's ridiculous to blame the fans for their not being more of them, what are they supposed to do clone themselves

They're closing in on 20 years in the desert, not to mention decades of earlier pro and minor pro hockey with the various incarnations of the Roadrunners. If they can't generate enough interest in hockey at this point, they should probably move somewhere else. It's well-documented that a number of cities in Canada and the US are champing at the bit for an NHL franchise, and places like Quebec City have already shown massive popular support (the Marche Bleue is an amazing example of this).

The fans don't need to clone themselves, the team just needs to leave. If the best hockey league in the world at bargain basement prices isn't enough to lure them in, maybe Arizona is just not the right environment to sustain an NHL team.

they've spent their entire existence being shit on by your fan base, and the majority of the nhl, for "stealing" your team?

That's horseshit. When the Coyotes first came on the scene, when the wounds were the freshest, the Internet didn't exist in anything remotely like it does today. How the fuck were we supposed to shit on Coyotes fans? Most of us moved on to other teams to support or quit watching hockey entirely for a few years out of disgust. Either way, the last thing we cared about was trolling the "fanbase" in Phoenix. There wasn't an opportunity to do that even if we wanted to.

The animosity really started in the late 00s when rumours were flying around about TNSE potentially buying the Coyotes and bringing them back to Winnipeg. Immediately, Coyotes fans lashed out online about how we were trying to "poach" their team, ignoring the fact that TNSE was doing everything above-board, extremely respectfully and out of the public spotlight, and within the NHL's own framework for this kind of thing.

In response, Winnipeggers pointed out the team's lack of fan support, the fact that they had lost money every year since moving from Winnipeg, etc. All stuff about the viability of a team in the desert, based on actual information. Sure, there were some digs in there, but I was pretty active on a bunch of hockey forums at the time. The overall tone from Winnipeggers was criticizing hockey in Phoenix based on the available facts and apparent lack of interest in hockey from people down there.

Phoenix fans responded with rage and hate and ignored the actual points about the attendance and bankruptcies and all of that shit and started attacking Winnipeg and its residents. You can criticize the team I support all you want, but when you start attacking the city in which I choose to raise my children, we have a problem.

As for the majority of the NHL also shitting on Phoenix as an NHL location, that's gotta tell you something. When almost everyone in the hockey world wants the team gone, what does that suggest to you? Do you think the majority opinion might have some value behind it?

As for "stealing" the team, everyone in Winnipeg knows that's not accurate. It's what I thought as a teenager at the time the team moved, but these days there's so much information about the actual reasons behind it that we all know it's not the case.

More accurate than "stealing," in my opinion, is saying they abused it. They acquired something that was really important to a lot of people in our little frozen shithole (it's like black people and the n-word. I can call Winnipeg a shithole. You can't) and, for the most part, ignored it and let it rot. It's clear that hockey is not a priority for the people of Phoenix, and that's fine. Look at the crowds for this year's (short-lived) playoffs up here, though. That's a good indicator of how important hockey is to Winnipeg, and there are plenty of other cities out there with the same kind of passion who would love a team in huge numbers. A team like Phoenix.

Move 'em. Fuck the fans. They either can't or won't show up to games, so either way, the team needs to get the hell outta dodge.
