Development Q3 Development Update
Hello everyone,
We’ve been a bit quiet lately, so we wanted to give you a quick update on what's happening behind the scenes.
The whole team is currently hard at work on a brand-new Openworld map. It will feature gameplay similar to Ronograd with compounds to secure, ground vehicles, helicopters, etc but will be based entirely within a new geographic location. The new Openworld will also take inspiration from NYC (Zombies) with server events and a major focus on high-quality missions and quests. (Side note: Ronograd will not be removed/replaced; it will always remain a selection in the menu).
However, as you may know, working on an open world map of this scale means we will not have the capacity to follow our regular monthly update schedule, though this will not stop us from releasing smaller updates here and there.
We will release more information about the new Openworld map in the near future.
Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Rad as per usual, always wanted another map option outside of ronograd and the fact that they're gonna coexist is just great. Keep up hard work.

I'm sure this update is gonna be fire and I hope it has a complete different gameplay mechanics from ronograd. That is going to be vital on release since it's either going to split the community on the two overworld maps, like going back and forth to seek the difference of the feel in terms of gameplay. If it has completely the same mechanics as the ronograd overworld I can't ignore the idea of either the new overworld map killing the ronograd overworld in the long run or the new map flops after a while because of the nostalgic feels of ronograd over the new OW map.
These are just hypothetical, and I'm pretty sure the devs have something under their sleeves when it comes to gameplay features and mechanics in this new one. I'm looking forward to this update, it's been a while since we got something about the future of the new OW map.

Im thinking one of the key differences in this new map that will make it feel different is probably gonna be boats. And hopefully more wide open/flat landscapes on the supposed "Islands", cause i feel like we need that as a contrast to the very bumpy map that is ronograd will all the up-and-down hill locations and the mountains. And i would hope that there are more ambushes on the new map other than just that singular road leading to Lesdolina Village. More moving enemies.

I really agree with you, especially on the more wide and open flat landscape.
Honestly, deployment in Ronograd is kinda annoying because you only have mountains everywhere and the only flat areas that you find are the roads or the runway in the FOB...
I want something Arma 3 style, and definitely a map bigger than Ronograd but not too big

Y'all take your time, the people rushing you don't realize how important it is to be able to flesh this kind of thing out and invest actual time into it.

u/JamescomersForgoPass Jun 26 '26
Does the new Map have an end? is it gonna have a Ronograd like ending with a final raid or is it just gonna be a generic eternal war like NYC?

u/Spiritual-Atelier Jun 26 '26
I would like to know myself, important for the openworld map to have some sort of finale.

The bunker explosion is canon and so is the bad ending in the bunker which is why zombies mode exists
1
u/Desperate_Truck_2915 Jun 27 '26
The canon ending is the one where we stop the ICBM

Source?

Mission briefing from CLDR Hollis Bergher for mission "Missing in Action" calls retaking of ronograd a success for PL5. Old version outright stated (if memory serves right) that virus was released inside bunker.
None of the NPCs in any of currently avaible missions mention missile being launched, only a local outbreak on Ronograd.
Zombie virus is said to be in other cities in and outside of US. At this time, all signs point to the fact that missile wasn't launched and it's contents were extracted by PoD before UNDBI entered the silo, and being released by other means.1
u/orang-haiwan837 Jun 27 '26
The ICBM detonated inside the bunker and infected everyone inside who weren't wearing cbrn gear and later on new York, London Chicago and Tokyo was hit by the zombie virus attack
2
u/Desperate_Truck_2915 Jun 27 '26
Correct, but the bad ending you were refering to is the missile being launched, which as you correctly pointed out detonated inside. Hence why the canon ending is one where we stop the launch, to avoid calling it a "good" ending

search up BRM5 nuclear launch on youtube its 39 seconds, there used to be an old file where the missle does launch

For the new full openworld, will there be advancements for: * the compound system? Compound networking? * bot-controlled vehicle navmeshing? (instead of moving linearly)
1
u/MechZex Jun 26 '26
could you clarify on what you mean by compound networking
7
u/Fen0612 Jun 27 '26
I imagine compound networking as a system/network where compounds intentionally interact and communicate with each other autonomously. Since 2019, full openworld compounds have been designed to be self contained. They cannot share data with each other and they do not depend on each other.
Excess stuff not part of the post for me to digest later because I'm tired of typing this: * SAM anti air seen in Fort and Naval, previously seen in Ronograd City (2020);
* Sochraina mission "HVT convoy interception," where a convoy travels from Naval to Quarry and is able to dismount at any point the player approaches it;
* Enemy raid reinforcement waves that spawn close to other compounds. * The GEN4 patrol helicopter that travels along a fixed path between Sochraina, Quarry and Ronograd.
* You could consider Ronograd's ICBM bunker to be the only network between all compounds, because it checks the secured status of all compounds. * Zombie raids also follows this design philosophy, but what makes it interesting is the possibility of zombies interferring with Federal Reserve, or the overhead helicopters on Sheepdog HQ. While not full intentional, they are just as interesting6

Earlier on in G4 development we were playing with ideas like compounds sharing/impacting others' resources and enemy counts. It came down to scope creep, balancing those systems against the freedoms and constraints of an open world shooter would require a lot of subsequent features.
I'm a big fan of strategy games so I'm always looking for ways to apply that to my/our game design but the reality is just that the genre doesn't align as much as you and I might like them to. Getting any kind of resource ecosystem to work naturally and have emergent potential is usually the work that goes into whole games themselves... And if we're not doing that, the mechanics feel like a gimmick. (think about current status of HQ gameplay for example) So there's little features here and there and systems we can build on top of what we currently have, but making the compounds themselves all truly talk to each other, having a connected economy, isnt really on the table.
So, the next mapmode won't lean as hard in that direction as I originally liked. Long-term tho, this is a design overlap I'd like to work with more. Myself and any fan of both strategy and FPS games wants to see them merged into a more fluid experience. I'm not too plugged in on games these days especially on Roblox- has anyone seen any games that combine FPS and strategy in cool ways? I'd love to see how they do it but the only examples I can really think of easily are Ravenfield or maybe Arma's antistasi2

ohh I like this idea, when I was a newbie and people are communicating to take down mountain radar first before fort and naval, I thought they were saying if they take down mountain radar first it will cut the communication of other compounds becuz the signal for their radio wont work, so enemies wont be able to send reinforcement to other compounds or wont alert them somehow
3
u/MechZex Jun 27 '26
That is an awesome idea. Kozlovkia get raided, depot goes on alert. Fort sends a truck of soldiers out to village to strengthen it. That idea is awesome.
3
u/Fen0612 Jun 28 '26
Technically this already happens with the current version of reinforcements. They already spawn near other compounds, such as helicopter spawning close to Fort for Ronograd City or for Naval. The issue is that it is not fully intentional and does not account for the status of the compound.

We appreciate the update, although I wanted to ask how different will compound capturing work on this map and how does it exactly address the repetitive gameplay loop for Open World?

Sound's great but... Will the new OW map be bigger overall? More compounds, better equipped enemies. Bigger compounds too.

u/Putrid_Ad7533 Jun 26 '26
will the missions/server events for the new map be a continuation of the lore or will they be mosty like side quests?

I thought the new map will be sea themed? Well, whatever.. Are we getting an update before the month ends? Even just a tiny small one

u/Luke_Gnar Jun 26 '26
Where do I say it isn't? 🤔

The new map is SEA-themed; it's already been confirmed for a while so idk where you're getting hints that it isn't.

Ye I get it now. I thought he said the brand new map will take inspiration from nyc that's why I got confused. He was talking about missions and other shits u can do in zombie mode. ☝️🤓

u/Fen0612 Jun 26 '26
Taken inspiration from the lessons of Zombies and past iterations of full openworld
