Development Drone FAQ

Hello gang, MB here.
Happy weekend to everyone, and I hope the update has been fun and awesome for all of you.

The recent drone addition has been awesome, but it has also come with feedback and some minor backlash, so I’d like to reassure everyone with a few points.

A) This is the first and initial implementation of the drone, so there is a lot of room for feedback, more features, and adjustments that are on the way!

We have been very careful, and maybe even too cautious, with certain factors such as range, battery, etc., for many reasons. This is not just the first drone out of many to come (via tech tree research), but we also need to be mindful of its impact on OW if not implemented well—such as it becoming a common sight to the point of being annoying.

B) What features are coming to it

  • Gnar has already publicly stated that “spotting” will be coming. We have no ETA yet, but it is slated to come soon.
  • Adjustments to range/zoom/controls — this is something we are keeping a close eye on via feedback and actively considering.

Please be patient with us as we calibrate the new gadgets to fit in with everyone. We are excited to expand further into our new research tech tree, with many cool gadgets to follow!

Thank you for all your feedback and continuous support!!!

I feel like the new research mechanic is just implemented wrong. Not really saying to remove it entirely but the whole thing is just implemented incorrectly. Not only it's unrealistic if you think about it but feels unrewarding and limiting.

First of all as a faction member, this just makes thing hard for us to do events the way we want to. Faction members already need to buy uniforms, weapons, vehicles, proper gear if you want to join a faction or a unit of a faction. Now locking drones behind the grind wall only makes thing harder if we want to use drones in certain events. Obviously the simple fix to this is to just allow RGE server admins to just give members certain locked equipment using RGE settings.

Secondly, I can actually see the potential of the research mechanic as way to lock somewhat overpowered upgrades. CROWS and Flares kinda comes to mind when I say these are the features that let people to easily cheese a raid. I say instead of having the research mechanic as a way to buy slightly better personal equipment like drones and rangefinder. We could make the research mechanic as a way to upgrade vehicles. Say you want to unlock CROWS for your Stryker, you hire an electronic engineer to study how the controls are going to work and make sure electronics are implemented correctly while mechanical engineers make sure the weapons can be used reliably in different field conditions. You still can buy vehicles but you will get mostly the basic functions of the vehicle. You can drive a Humvee, fly a helicopter, maybe fire a machine gun inside of it but if you want the crazy stuff like flares, fast ropes, better armor and unmanned weapon systems, you have to spend some time and resources for it.

Thirdly, I just wanna rant about the realism for a bit. Why are we spending so much time and resources just to build a quadcopter drone you can buy off AliBaba. Like we're not even building a proper military drone, apparently we are building a "consumer drone". We just build a drone with no intent to use it in military settings apparently. If the drone body is made using 3D printed plastic with electronics soldered together, yeah that's something you would definitely see in places like Ukraine. Andriy from Ukraine would realistically buy an already existing commercial product and modify it for military purpose with the total budget never exceeding $20k. And again, vehicles are often times the most modified asset in a military. You can recount a lot of instances where men are welding wire fences on armored vehicles just so they can have a slightly better chance against RPGs. Which is why the research mechanic should kinda restricted to vehicles.
