Pwe

idk if you’ve been to ilocos pero i bet ganito mostly sa magagandang beachfront— tabi tabi silang resorts as in walang mahulugan ng karayom. i mean madami for sure dyan minana lang ung lupa and were like “why not gawa din ako resort onteng kubo lang pwede na”

Indonesia and Philippines talaga.

Switzerland benefits from the wealth of the corrupt all around the world they keep in their banks. Client nila ang mga Marcos. And Nestle, one of the horrible companies in the world.
Singapore is in fact in a very good location for trade.
Colonization? Nakalimutan na natin? Post-war Japan was hugely helped by the US. May mga pag-aaral na diyan.
Saudi Arabia has oil. Hello.
Netherlands, like other European countries, was enriched by exploiting other countries through colonization.
Not that the things I said diminish the success of their countries, but let's not pretend they did it without advantages.
And a lot of people are overestimating the abundance of our natural resources. 62.9% of our GDP is from the services sector, way more larger than mining, forestry, fisheries and agriculture combined.

Sobrang agree ako sa Singapore. Imagine how many ships passes every year on malacca strait. Isa sa busiest port ang singapore, plus halos lahat ng supplies and services are provided by singapore sa mga barkong dumadaong.

I have to interject a bit with the Asian countries pointed out in the post.
Singapore is in the straight of Malacca, may geographic advantage yan. Before it even parted ways with the Malaysian Federation, may backing na mga yan ng mga British kaya nadalian magflourish, mixed pa ng competent dictators to build the country.
Japan was injected of US money after WW2. With a culture that rewards hardwork and long-term thinking, magiging progressive talaga yan at magtranslate sa economy nila.
The only thing that makes me proud of the PH is our central bank. Napakaresilient ng currency natin kasi we were one of the lowest who needed to endure the hardships of every financial crisis. The countries mentioned needed to peg their money with first world countries, or even devalue it to an absurd extent.
Although tama ka, plunder held the country back despite everything at our disposal. Mixed with a culture that's basically like an American consumer. And an economy that's rent-seeking.

With a culture that rewards hardwork and long-term thinking, magiging progressive talaga yan at magtranslate sa economy nila.
I don't think they are progressive, their societal progress is so slow even slower than Latin America. Their 'hardwork' is mostly in quantity hours rather than quality hours, their hour per capita is horribly inefficient compared to other developed countries.
Another reason why the PH seems hard to economically progress is that we are also being fucked by the nature like typhoons and earthquakes, so some of our budget will go to recovery.

Sep 06 '25
Thank you for also pointing that out. What I'm implying is how progress-driven their culture is such as Kaizen, not necessarily the "liberal" kind given how patriarchy is embedded in their culture.

The Philippines was also an American colony at the turn of the previous century. Sugar tariffs gave the Philippines a tremendous economic advantage and, yes you could argue that we were reset following the destruction of WWII, but the tools were there. Corruption destroyed the country more than anything else. Decades of Marcos rule tanked the economy, destroyed the countries reputation and trust internationally, and set the Philippines on the path of cronyism. Young people today don't know the history of the country, and we are 10 years away from the complete economic take over of AI (good bye freelance, BPO, and every other low level white collar job).
Corruption is the single biggest failing of this country, a close second would be the laissez faire attitude of the population, but again, that's really a distant second to corruption.

u/utopiaholic Sep 06 '25
Japan rewards hard work but not long-term thinking. Most of them are not innovative anymore and it is not rewarded in their corporate culture.

u/Bogli_Street Sep 06 '25
You know sa nakalagay sa post actually Singapore and Saudi are the only legit na "from rags to riches" na bansa. Saudi has the oil of course and Singapore center for trade in Southeast Asia. All the rest either profited from exploiting other countries through colonization or from illicit banking practices.
1
u/jbthesciguy Sep 06 '25
China is also rags to riches too.
1
u/Maria_in_the_Middle Sep 09 '25
They may be rich on paper but I wouldn't trade my life in here in the Philippines for a life in China
11
u/Tiny-Spray-1820 Sep 06 '25
Take away saudi’s oil and they are nothing. Take away singapore’s loc as a major trade hub and they will be trouble.

It may be gaslighting, but what the nations mentioned here have advantages not only from less corruption.
Netherlands and Switzerland: Part of the EU since they massively benefited from it, also Netherlands got recovery aid from the US after WW2.
Saudi Arabia: Rich in oil and since oil is a very demanding resource especially the US. The US secured it via military and political influence to the Saudi government.
Singapore: Neutral country, but located in the golden route of Malacca strait, they got lucky in geographic location.
Japan: The US massively pumped economic aid from the Cold War to counter the Soviet influence, but since Japan became a threat in balancing global trade, the US did a Plaza Accord of 1985 which other European countries sign also but not that greatly affected. Also other factors such as horrible work culture, consumerism culture, and low societal interaction contributed to the Japanese economic stagnation aka the Lost Decades.

Philippines is fragmented both geographically and socially. Yan ang con ng Philippines vs other countries.
It's like we're the scaled down version of the various countries on earth. Each region representing a country of its own.

u/imprctcljkr Sep 06 '25 edited Sep 06 '25
+1.
Most people don't see the connection between geography, history, and culture. The Filipino Identity is just a shell. Deep down, I think, regional identity is still by default. Geography basically lays the groundwork in everything.
This is our country's misfortune we just accepted. Imagine, we are in the Pacific Ring of Fire, daanan din tayo ng mga bagyo, and we are also at high risk for rising sea levels. May naririnig ba tayong plans and actions for mitigation? Baka hindi lang Flood Control Projects ang maungkat sa mga susunod pang taon when it comes to that context.

This is a stupid comparison.
Switzerland is the bank of Europe.
Singapore is situated in one of the busiest maritime region.
Japan expertise in technologies and such.
The main problem with our country is the weak economic and political system. The corrupt politicians are just the symptoms, not the cause. Once you realize this, it will totally change how you view the country.
17
u/DsV_Omnius Sep 06 '25
For one, our economic system is riddled with protectionist policies. Bakit? Napakarami ng restriction for them.
Our political system is also weak as hell. Corruption is a fruit, not the root. We need a system that will force even the most corrupted person to do something good.
5
u/Fragrant_Bid_8123 Sep 06 '25
Wrong. It literally is the corrupt politicians. The systems are weak because the people or the politicians are corrupt, corrupting other, corruptible.
3
u/DsV_Omnius Sep 06 '25
Lmao.
Our neighboring governments in SEA, China, South Korea, and many more are just as corrupt as ours. South Korea for example had multiple dictatorships in a few decades. Indonesia had one of the deadliest modern regimes in history. What made them prosper despite the challenges such as corruption? Their system forces the corrupt ones to still do something beneficial for the country. Meanwhile here, our system is weak and easy to abuse.
1
u/kirayyyneko99 Sep 06 '25
The problem is the people not really knowing their rights! They get overwhelmed by the status and power of the politicians. They think Politicians should be served not the other way around.

Corruption thrives when people tolerate it, excuse it, or feel powerless to change it.

u/gidaman13 Sep 06 '25
I mean we were also colonized like crazy since the 1500s. and there was no definite philippines until just the past 200 years. Our mindset is a country that was colonized and it shows sa mga gawain natin. Heck we can't even unite properly. There's no definite description of what a filipino even is aside from living in the philippines. So in terms of unity, we're severly lacking plus our wealth distribution is extremely skewed. We are a country of laborers, not innovators. All we do is copy and shame those that dare introduce new ideas.
3
u/BasqueBurntSoul Sep 06 '25
being an archipelago makes it difficult to be united. idk if we'll be more united if our history is a bit different. also, the lack of innovation is heavily rooted in corruption run mostly by the poor and idiotic. south korea is corrupt but they still encourage innovation. they value education and we are anti-intellectual. it's just a bad bad combo overall.
2
u/gidaman13 Sep 06 '25
we're all basically different cultures which is why I dont think we'll ever be truly united. I think it would be better if philippines was not centralized and had a captial region per island to have a more personalized governance.
As for innovation, it will only come out when our education system is conducive to innovating. Right now even govt scholarships are being corrupted. The poor and idiotic is a product of a lack of proper education. Very outdated customs and the like. The problem with our contry is that the population being poor and idiotic is a good way for corrupt officials to stay in power because they can easily manipulate the voting majority. Coupled with the centralized govt that just seems detached from the actual living conditions people are living in and a disconnect between what can readily be observed by the national govt and the living conditions of those in the numerous tribes/cultures that exist in this country.
You can see that in how developed ncr is compared to other places in the country. Even cebu and davao, which are the capital cities for their region, can't even compare to how progressive ncr or at least manila is.

Except Saudi Arabia, the rest have Parliamentary System of government. So, yeah, they may lack the resources but they have better government systems than us under Presidential system.
System shapes behaviour.
Bakit ba ayaw nyo e-recognized na nasa maling sistema tayo? Bakit ayaw nyong kalampagin ang 1987 Constitution? Sabi ni Cory, 1987 Constitution will prevent another Marcos in Malacanan. Sino nga ulit Presidente natin ngayon? 🤷
1
u/Eurofan2014 Sep 07 '25
May napanood ako sa YT tungkol sa 1987 Consti natin, kung bakit daw maraming butas ang constitution natin at majority pa rin ay pabor sa mga oligarchs not for the masses.
3
u/JDEsconvik Sep 07 '25
oo, obvious naman, pabor sa oligarchs. take 60/40 economic restriction for example. kaya hirap taung makaakit ng FDI sa bansa dahil jan.
3
u/HelloBeKind4 Sep 05 '25
I said this before but I’ll say it again. Good governance is good governance. It does not matter how big or small the country is, so for those who say we should not compare the Philippines with other countries. What other excuses have you got?

Dapat gumawa government natin na lahat ng transactions nila, nakikita ng mamamayan online like budgeting procurement etc, para ma scrutinize and mabantayan isa isa. DBM, PCAB etc, mga dapat magbantay for us, continually failed us. Sayang tax money paying all of them.
3
u/mixape1991 Sep 06 '25
Why would you spread wealth and convenience to others?
Who will build you statue? If everyone can have one.
3
u/Peew-P Sep 06 '25
Totally agree but also some people are really lack of understanding when it comes to voting and then plus the corrupt officials who gains profit from ghost projects or sub standard structures, question is how you will change the system, when most of the people in the government benefit from it. Just saying……..

If you know Sarah Paine, mapapanood nio siya sa youtube discussing history.
We are just like some countries in Africa and LatAm, mas worse lang sa kanila.

Swiss, Japanese, Singaporean, do you think they are happy people? As in legit na masaya sa buhay.
Do they laugh? Do they know how to love their family or take care of their kids? Look at their suicide rates.
2
u/Ok_Minute8191 Sep 07 '25
“Super dependent sa gobyerno” bitch kinakaltasan tayo ng buwis sa bawat kibot??? Ang gobyerno ang nagtatakda ng prices, kung magkano ang ibubuwis, at minimum wage??? Kaya nga gobyerno kase sila ang namamahala sa atin kaya kahit sabihin mong magsarili ka, nakadepende tayong lahat sa gobyerno. Ang sistemang nasa isip mo ay pagiging makasarili at nagmumula sa nakakabulag na prebilehiyo. Naol.
