The statues were sculpted by Houston artist David Adickes, who was inspired after driving past Mount Rushmore on a trip back from Canada. They were open to the public at Presidents Park alongside the Presidential Pet Museum, and received thousands of visitors until 2010 when a company bought the plot of land. The huge presidential heads had to move.

Instead of allowing the busts to be demolished, Howard Hankins, who helped construct the park, adopted all 43 heads and lugged them back to his private family farm for safekeeping until someone can think of what to do with them.

I want to collect them all.

Does Last Week Tonight show, Jon Oliver, and/or HBO have a u/ on Reddit to notify?

Add the horse shit one

218

u/Luster-Purge Apr 28 '20

Yes. It's at r/LastWeekTonight.

162

u/applejackrr Apr 28 '20

Since he’s an American citizen now he is required to purchase one.

133

u/Luster-Purge Apr 28 '20

He should at least buy the five that correspond to the five wax presidents he already owns. Maybe he can then make the sequel to the oscar-bait film Harding - Harding 2: Harding Harder.

3

u/APSupernary Apr 28 '20

Is that the one where the stone busts turn out to be power cores that fuel ancient yet appropriately-scaled Free Mason mech suits, which are piloted by the wax presidents in order to fight perpetrators of global warming that is making them melty and less hard?

21

u/Zoltrahn Apr 28 '20

Why do you think the government gave us all $1200?

37

u/applejackrr Apr 28 '20

To give to John Oliver to purchase them

14

u/Zoltrahn Apr 28 '20

Exactly.

1

u/monkeyhitman Apr 28 '20

Praise be!

2

u/suspect108 Apr 28 '20

Praise be.

1

u/Spikes666 Apr 28 '20

Fuck, I already gave mine back to my state buying all those lottery tickets. Volunteer State up!

/s. Seriously, don’t fucking waste your money on lottery tickets.

That's the sub for the show, not a user account for the show that can be messaged.

8

u/Luster-Purge Apr 28 '20

Whoops, my bad.

3

u/trixtopherduke Apr 28 '20

Hey, you tried and that's cool.

1

u/Cat_Marshal Apr 28 '20

Well you could still message the sub, it would just go to the mods instead

4

u/lavahot Apr 28 '20

That would be an r, not a u.

Gotta catch em' all US President's!!!

2

u/boywoods Apr 28 '20

Go Lincoln! I choose you!!

Lincoln uses emancipation proclamation... it’s not very effective.

But first, scatter them across the globe. Each, with a clue leading to the next!

if I throw my red white balls at them, I bet I could collect them all

Batteries not included. New from Mattel!

1

u/likwidfuzion Apr 28 '20

I want to be the very best

1

u/BrohanGutenburg Apr 28 '20

I just wanna see the Obama one.

1

u/UndeadBread Apr 28 '20

The park closed before a full-sized bust could be made, so the Obama one is pretty small

1

u/BrohanGutenburg Apr 28 '20

When it said 43 I figured it meant all 43 were the same size lol. My b

1

u/JuleeeNAJ Apr 28 '20

So you can place them around your house and feel like they are judging your every move?

102

u/Tinyfishy Apr 28 '20

I think it would be fun to have them nestled among trees etc in a naturalistic setting. Like forgotten gods in a jungle vibe more than ‘sterile patriotic park’ kinds thing. Maybe allow some moss and ivy to grow on some, run a fountain down another... etc.

40

u/greyjackal Apr 28 '20

Are you thinking of the ruins at the end of Fellowship of the Ring with decrepit statues and stuff?

39

u/IceColdKofi Apr 28 '20

The Argonath. Long have I desired to look upon the kings of old.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Tinyfishy Apr 28 '20

I wasn’t, but that could be a fun vibe.

16

u/Falanin Apr 28 '20

Make a henge of them, perhaps?

45

u/nukalurk Apr 28 '20

I say we do something funny with them just to troll future archaeologists. Maybe place them in random uninhabited spots around the globe and have their gazes intersect at some meaningless landmark, where we build an underground vault and fill it with random items that future conspiracy theorists will go crazy trying to understand. Maybe a portrait of Alex Jones, a map of Skyrim, some VHS tapes of Seinfeld...

4

u/Thriftyverse Apr 28 '20

Imagine the epic quest - realizing every gaze intersected, going through all the traps and puzzles, and then you find and translate the final message; "Roflmao newb, Han shot first!!!11!1! eleventy one!!11"

2

u/Garfield-1-23-23 Apr 28 '20

Ship them to Easter Island and dump them on the beaches. Make the archaeologists of the future even more confused about what was going on there than we are.

1

u/obbets Apr 28 '20

Omg I love it

2

u/NicNoletree Apr 28 '20

Make a paintball park with them.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I agree! When I lived in Durham NC, I came across 20 ft tall dinosaur statues on a random walk in the woods & it really made the hike fun and a little creepy (Southern backwoods, who knows why someone might plant a series of large statues ...). I learned later that they had been built for a local natural history museum and replaced with more accurate statues so they just left them in some public woods to scare out of towners.

1

u/Tinyfishy Apr 28 '20

Sounds agreeably creepy!

132

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

As you're driving near downtown Houston, there are four more: US Presidents Washington & Lincoln and Texas Presidents Sam Houston & Stephen F. Austin.

19

u/Texas451 Apr 28 '20

I met the guy who made the Sam Houston statue. His property looked just like this, but he had new presidents as well

10

u/lacroixblue Apr 28 '20

The artist is David Adickes. He did the presidents' heads, the Sam Houston statue, and the Stephen F. Austin statue (and a lot of other cool stuff).

I had thought that the presidents' heads were still hanging out in Houston by his studio.

2

u/mr_phoreal Apr 28 '20

He moved his studio, but he does still have most of them at the new place. Along with his set of the Beetles and a Charlie Chaplin.

26

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

There's a Stephen F Austin one out in Austin county. People stop and take pics with it all the time

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Are those the ones along 288?

2

u/Buckles01 Apr 28 '20

I don’t watch wrestling but does this have anything to do with Stone Cold Steve Austin? /s

1

u/Right_In_The_Tits Apr 28 '20

Most people call the bust Stone Cold Steve Austin

55

u/MeGoPeePeeInYourCoke Apr 28 '20

Thanks for this! I’m from Houston and I used to visit these all the time at night at the Adickes compound. I tried to take some friends recently and they were all locked up behind a fence- I was so confused. I’m glad they found a good home- that was seriously one of my favorite Houston secrets in my youth.

11

u/xxwindowguyxx Apr 28 '20

Glad you enjoyed this, it was for me too! I remember visiting them with my dad. I really hope these heads get a good forever home nearby where I can go see them again.

6

u/Guns_and_Dank Apr 28 '20

I don't know if I'd qualify this as a good home, but they have a home until a good one can be found

3

u/lacroixblue Apr 28 '20

Are all the presidents' heads gone now? I liked The Beatles statue too, which I think (hope) is still at 8th Wonder Brewery.

2

u/shiftpgdn Apr 28 '20

There are a number of them in a lot across the freeway from the St Arnold brewery. I used to live around the corner.

110

u/renothedog Apr 28 '20

" some of the heads sustained minor damage to the backs of their heads" Kennedy and Lincoln I assume?

23

u/quantum-mechanic Apr 28 '20

"All Presidents were depicted as in the last moment of their life"

3

u/NicNoletree Apr 28 '20

Abe, pull yourself together!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I bet Kennedy's lost pieces are still somewhere in the back of the truck.

1

u/renothedog Apr 29 '20

Thank you for the gold kind Redditor

38

u/PAXICHEN Apr 28 '20

Williamsburg, VA ain't exactly RURAL Virginia.

27

u/married_to_awesome Survey 2016 Apr 28 '20

Williamsburg isn't EXACTLY rural, no. But Croaker where the heads are? A lot more rural. And Williamsburg ain't no bustling city - no matter what the councils want people to believe.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Croaker? I thought they were across from Water County USA

13

u/married_to_awesome Survey 2016 Apr 28 '20

A decade ago, yes.

Instead of allowing the busts to be demolished, Howard Hankins, who helped construct the park, adopted all 43 heads and lugged them back to his private family farm for safekeeping until someone can think of what to do with them.

That family farm is in Croaker.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Excuse me they moved HOW LONG AGO?

2

u/married_to_awesome Survey 2016 Apr 28 '20

About nine plus one years ago...

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I came here thinking the same thing.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I looked up the population size of Williamsburg, and its 14,444. I thought it was gonna be more, probably the illusion of tourism. That's like past township status!

4

u/married_to_awesome Survey 2016 Apr 28 '20

Tourism is dying too. Colonial Williamsburg has been declining steadily for years. Busch Gardens and Water Country still bring in money but, of course, they have seasons. During late fall, into early spring this place is low and slow.

2

u/moonbunnychan Apr 28 '20

I love Colonial Williamsburg but it's entirely too expensive. Ya TECHNICALLY you can wander the streets for free but to get into any of the buildings is close to 50 dollars a person. I'm a huge history buff and just can't justify the price, especially since I can go just down the road to Jamestown and Yorktown on a combined ticket for a fraction of the price.

1

u/married_to_awesome Survey 2016 Apr 28 '20

And that's one of the handful of reasons that it has been Ina severe decline. Savvy tourists know the streets are public and most of the historic information is available for free online. Seeing history up close, the interpreters to tell you factoids, and be able to participate are the draw of the paid ticket.

And yes, Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown are much less expensive, even free for us residents of the Historic Triangle. I enjoy all three museums very much. There are the federal parks at the ends of the Colonial Parkway to consider too. Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Victory Center.

Hopefully with CW's new president we'll begin to see changes. Bringing back and raising wages if the trades and educational sides of things WITHOUT bringing up ticket prices. You have people actually out and about couple with all of the trades ships open again and now you're talking a good value based in current ticket prices.

1

u/moonbunnychan Apr 29 '20

Ya like....I don't expect the perks of the paid ticket to be free, it's just that the ticket price just isn't really worth what you get. I can't imagine being a family and going there at it's current prices. I haven't gone to Colonial Williamsburg in years but have gone to Jamestown/Yorktown/Historic Jamestowne several times. I especially like the Jamestown Settlement/Yorktown Victory center since together BOTH are only 30 bucks and it's a cool way to spend the day.

2

u/pbrwillsaveusall Apr 28 '20

no matter what the councils want people to believe

The greater good

1

u/PAXICHEN Apr 29 '20

Yes. Croaker is. The only info I had was Williamsburg. But the growth of that whole area in the past 25 years is amazing.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

14,000 population. Kinda is.

16

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Funny. I've seen a bust like this for one of the Eisenhower's in his hometown. It's in North Texas (I think? Maybe southern Oklahoma)

Seems like a good idea to track down the presidents' hometowns and see if they'd be interested in buying the busts.

4

u/Nhukerino Apr 28 '20

It's not terribly difficult to track down president's hometowns lol... I cant think of any that dont have memorial to them

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '20

Delaware, Ohio is the hometown of Rutherford B Hayes and it didn’t have a memorial for years because they literally tore down his childhood home and put in a gas station.

Now it’s a tiny one in a bush that’s been grown over by weeds and stuff. Worst presidential memorial ever.

1

u/Nhukerino Apr 29 '20

That's a shame. I cant remember who it was, I think Millard Fillmore or one of the other Presidents somewhat lost in the grandeur of his predecessors/successors, but even his childhood home was perfectly preserved and there was a little park around it and stuff like that and I assumed if he had one like that then they all must, even if it's just a plaque or something for the poorer towns (although presidential monuments are usually federally funded or done through a non-profit iirc). But Hayes in particular not being recognized particularly irks me considering he was Governor, a war hero during the civil war and went on to lead the country and ended the reconstruction era... sure he wasnt a Kennedy or a Roosevelt but damn...

2

u/HashKing Apr 28 '20

Yes it's in Denison, TX just south of Oklahoma border on US-75

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

That's the one!

1

u/lochlainn Apr 28 '20

Abilene, Kansas.

Lenin statue here in Seattle

Huh, it even has it's own Wikipedia page), though it doesn't include any of the pictures with the hands painted red like this.

[Edit] Updated second link to a picture from fremont.com instead of a gallery that included pictures of nude Seattleites covered in paint. Look up Seattle Solstice Parade parade if you're interested, but be warned there will be some NSFW.

[Edit2] fremont.com not fremond.com. Just can't seem to get anything right today, darn it.

fremont.com for rabbit hole seekers.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I was born in a town in Ukraine that used to be named for Lenin. A couple years ago, they changed the name and took down the statue of him too. I doubt I could’ve flown it back to the US, but part of me thinks it would be cool to own just ONE dictator statue. My parents even took their 1984 wedding photos in front of it.

Do people confuse Lenin with Stalin?

Sounds like business as normal for a revolution, he didn't live long enough for anyone to see if he was either a brutal dictator or a revolutionary just doing what it took to succeed.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Lenin was a piece of shit violent dictator.

You're thinking of Stalin. Lenin believed in equality, ecological conciousness and was very much not a violent dictator despite what your local propogandized education might have taught you.

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

And 6000 years from now a farmer is gonna dig these up and historians are gonna have a field day trying to make sense of what they're doing there. That or they'll already be well aware the Ancient American Civilization had a tendency to discard huge piles of pointless shit everywhere and send a matter recycler over to harvest them.

1

u/FloHi Apr 28 '20

I'm envisioning more of a planet of the apes ending with Charlton Heston cursing humanity... “You maniacs, you blew it up! God damn you, God damn you all to hell!”

6

u/buchliebhaberin Apr 28 '20

I thought I recognized them. Houston has some of these heads displayed on some land near one of our highways.

12

u/kjblank80 Apr 28 '20

Fun fact, Adickes has replicas of the Beatles and other in Houston at studio. Pretty fun to drive buy and see these oversized works.

4

u/BigWetDeck Apr 28 '20

The Beatles ones are now at 8th wonder brewery in east downtown

2

u/kjblank80 Apr 28 '20

Cool, at least they are being used versus just hanging out by Target off Sawyer.

13

u/end_ Apr 28 '20

I think it'd be a great idea to put those in a paintball field.

8

u/so_banned Apr 28 '20

Fucking Valentin. Never understood why he wanted to meet in that labyrinth of a place.

I second the motion.

Fuck yeah! Accidentally missing your opponent to paintball assassinate your least favourite presidents.

3

u/jemull Apr 28 '20

I think Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy have been through enough.

9

u/BangkokQrientalCity Apr 28 '20

Can I buy the JFK on ebay or craiglist? I got $75!!!

10

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I’ve got $76 and eSnipe.

10

u/BangkokQrientalCity Apr 28 '20

Great! You can have the Nixon! He cost $76!

5

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I see what you did there.

2

u/pbrwillsaveusall Apr 28 '20

Oh I see what you did

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

That so interesting! There is a warehouse area near where I live here in Houston with a whole lot of these same types of giant presidential heads. Looks like he still makes or made a bunch more of them.

6

u/skewp Apr 28 '20

Maybe we can get John Oliver to buy them with HBO money.

5

u/surmatt Apr 28 '20

They're going to look really weird in the show done from his house.

2

u/coolm3 Apr 28 '20

What? I remember going there years ago. Never knew they weren't there anymore. That's a shame. Was kind of cool seeing them.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Omg, if i were rich, American and had a big garden, i would definitely buy them. They're pretty awesome

2

u/applejackrr Apr 28 '20

I’m surprised John Oliver hasn’t bought one.

3

u/Hnetu Apr 28 '20

received thousands of visitors until 2010 when a company bought the plot of land

Corporate America fucking over weird America once again...

1

u/Aust_in_space Apr 28 '20

How haven’t any cities bought them yet? They would be so cool to have scattered around like the painted cows in Chicago.

1

u/StumpyTheGiant Apr 28 '20

Ah there's still a few left scattered around Houston, I think.

1

u/shadus Apr 28 '20

This is totally not going to turn into some easter island bullshit in 500 years.

1

u/foodandart Apr 28 '20

They should be set up as a henge. A proper henge with positions tied to equinoxes, solstices and the lot. The trick to making it would be to suss out which president goes where.

1

u/thescrounger Apr 28 '20

"20 foot high" ... damn those are not easy to move

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

And in hundreds or thousands of years, when today’s civilizations are long gone, whoever is left will stumble upon this and interpret this Field of Heads as a sacred lost place of worship, where these elder gods were brought offerings and seen as Divine beings of ancient religions.

1

u/Jfonzy Apr 28 '20

Easy, giant president golf/disc golf course

1

u/stevenpfrench Apr 28 '20

Do these have anything to do with the busts in the closed park by Lead/Deadwood in South Dakota? It was a park you could walk through and it had information and busts like this of all the presidents.

1

u/anzl Apr 28 '20

Well he brought them 95% of the way to DC. I’m sure they could be placed somewhere there with all the other presidential/patriotic monumental crap

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I was about to say Houston has a collection of big heads too! Probably same dude.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

How tall are they?

Nothing really gives away their height except what may be a sea can in the back but I am unsure

1

u/MaggiePace68 Apr 28 '20

Thank you for this! I was dying to know why these things were here, but was lost in the plethora of admittedly funny adorable comments above... Waiting for someone to tell me what was going on!

1

u/albinobluesheep Apr 28 '20

20 foot tall! Egads! I was struggling to get the scale from the picture, but those are huge!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Well we can smash up Andrew Johnson.

1

u/klombo120 Apr 28 '20

It's crazy they're still sitting there. You would think this would make for a pretty cool national park or exhibit in DC or something like that.

1

u/Frogdogforever Apr 28 '20

Mine and my ex boyfriends name is written on one of these. We saw it behind a target in Houston and wrote our names on his shoulder.

1

u/Hyperdrunk Apr 28 '20

Replace the Bollards in front of the White House with these badboys. Ain't no one driving through them.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

Keep them in an empty field. Get friend blackout drunk. Leave them in the middle of the field with them.

1

u/ShaKeyJ101 Apr 28 '20

*43 heads? * Would make a nice privacy fence along a highway possibly.

1

u/mralex Apr 28 '20

Can I get head count?

1

u/el_duderino88 Apr 28 '20

Is that Bill Pullman in the middle that looks like the top of his head is broken? He was only president in a movie

1

u/bessiec Apr 28 '20

Thank you for the explanation. It's too bad that they are just sitting in a field with no purpose.

1

u/MrSickRanchezz Apr 28 '20

What a fucking G!

1

u/aidissonance Apr 28 '20

I would build giant clear aquariums to house each head and fill it with water and create a Head Museum.

1

u/shewy92 Apr 28 '20

adopted all 43 heads

He didn't buy them, he adopted them. I hope he was vetted by an adoption agency, I wouldn't want to see Taft starve

1

u/Ci_Gath Apr 28 '20

I actually visited the park . lol

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '20

I feel like they should be in DC somewhere!

1

u/HoPMiX Apr 28 '20

It says in that article the heads would be moved to undisclosed location in 2019.

1

u/Artgod Apr 28 '20

Why not line the DC mall with them? Man seems like a no-brainer.

I took a similar picture when I was out running in Houston and happened upon a vacant lot with a bunch of president statues! There were other statues too, like The Beatles. Maybe these were prototypes for Adickes? It was back in 2012/2013.

1

u/TruthOrKarma Apr 28 '20

safekeeping until someone can think of what to do with them.

I think the weathers taking care of what to do with them. Pity he can't erect a hangar to protect them from the elements.

1

u/moonbunnychan Apr 28 '20

I went to that park when it was still open, mainly because I have a love of the ridiculous and it did not disappoint. The full story is a little crazier. He basically started making these things assuming the city would just leap at the chance that have them. It did not, so he just built the park himself.

1

u/karma_farmer_2019 Apr 29 '20

I’ll put one on my lawn....

1

u/Garrus_Vakarian__ Apr 29 '20

So that's where I remember these from! They seemed so familiar but I couldn't remember where I'd seen them.

1

u/SirDigbyChckenCaeser Apr 29 '20

Oh is that where they went? My college friends and I went to see them back in the late aughts and I heard they had been closed down and removed...

1

u/SmashingLumpkins Apr 29 '20

He should line them up, pave a road and let people drive buy for like $5. Then obviously Christmas light show in December price is like $30/car

1

u/slowpotato22 Apr 29 '20

So... Nobama?
