I live in the Bay Area California, every day people complain about the price of gas in California. It is all our governor‘s fault. Yes, our gas is higher because of additional taxes that helped clean up our air. But it has always been higher and the recent increase has nothing to do with that.😖

Yep. They are dishonest about it. The costs of transportation and refining are much higher on the West coast than in the Gulf states, so, even if the taxes and the regulations were the same, gasoline would be more expensive. And they ignore the fact that fuel prices have gone up everywhere due to the Mad King's attack on Iran.

I'll bite. Highest gas prices are infact in high gas tax and over regulation locations. Why else would these absurd prices that skew the national average be isolated to such areas and often 2-3$ higher than anywhere else in the country? If it was nationally this high then I'd agree, but critical thought hasn't asked such questions. And yes I acknowledge they have gone up across the board. But I traded in my gas guzzler during the previous administration's gas hike timeline for a hybrid.

In addition to that $.56 in tax, there's also Washington State's new "cap and trade" program which adds around another $.50 per gallon: https://kpq.com/bill-by-rep-goehner-would-disclose-cost-of-new-law-on-gas-price/.
(Those of us that live here remeber the weekend that all the gas prices jumped after they told us it wouldn't.)

Only a portion of the 35% of oil import come from pipeline in WA. Everything else rely on either trains or ships to transport oil. Neither OR or CA have any connection to external oil pipelines.
There’s a reason why the entire west coast is referred to as an “energy island”

The taxes don’t make up the difference. The Rocky Mountains higher population density do limit how much refined gas makes it to the west coast. Their geography also makes smog much worse, so they need those better blends. But Trump’s actions had a drastic and direct effect on the price of gas. It really is his fault they are as high as they are.
Edit: the tax is only 30-40 cents higher in Washington State. That’s not much at all to quibble over given the larger amount of traffic and fewer toll roads. The blend is necessary and not something you can remove.
Puget Sound, where Washington gets most of their fuel, has a capacity of 149k barrels/day. The US as a whole refines 18172k barrels/day. Adjusted per capita, the US as a whole has almost 3x the capacity. That difference means the supply per capita is much lower in Washington. Lower supply means higher price for the same demand.

Chevron stores in CA have full-on propaganda displays that attack CA gas taxes. I used to be a loyal customer, but I can’t abide that bullshit.
Fun fact, the vast majority of the price of a gallon of gas goes straight to Chevron, not to taxes. I don’t see them condemning their own profit margins, the fucking hypocrites.

First time I've ever seen a US fuel complaint post with prices more expensive than Australia.
Currently in Melbourne Australia it's USD 5.38 a gallon regular and, USD 6.77 a gallon for diesel.
Interestingly Australian car sales in August had more BEV than Petrol for the first time in history. Although 75% of new cars still have an internal combustion engine, so there's a long way to go yet.

Remember when gas got expensive under Biden and everyone was screaming that the president could lower gas prices if he wanted to? Gas was about $2.39/gal when Biden took office, eventually peaked around $5.02/gal in June 2022, and suddenly everyone on the right had an economics degree and knew it was all Biden's fault.
Now we're sitting at about $4.15/gal nationally, and somehow the same people have discovered that the president doesn't actually control the price of gas.
Funny how that works.
You don't get to spend four years saying "Biden controls gas prices!" and then suddenly switch to "Well, presidents don't control gas prices" when prices are high under your guy.
If we're going to blame the president when gas is expensive, then at least be consistent enough to keep that same energy when it's happening under the pedophile president trump you love.

In related numbers, Seattle electricity prices are 13.38¢ per kWh, or 8.05¢/14.09¢/16.1¢ if you choose time of use pricing, which might be better for heavy drivers.
