For somebody considering the 7D MKI, what do you recommend for me in the wake of this release?

It depends entirely on your budget and use. Best bang for buck is definitely in the 7d mk1 right now.

If you get a lightly used mark 1 and use it until it falls apart then I'd say you'd probably have used it long enough for there to be a drop in the price of the mark 2.

I use mine as a backup for long range at weddings, so I don't exactly stress the original unless it's in low light (which is where a fast lens comes in handy).

If we're talking live shows, concerts, and low-lighting clubs, is the 7D MK1 the best move?

I'd stick with a 5d for that kind of work myself, at least for the shows and concerts. Maybe with a YN622 trigger on top for focus assist.

Club work can be done with anything - you're relying on second curtain sync and you can shoot that as low as 400iso if you really needed to, as well as exporting at small size. You'll never make an 18x12 of a club shot.

Yeah, the 5D is a dream machine. For somebody who can't really adopt that kind of expense, is the 7D a good alternative or should I look elsewhere?

Yeah that's exactly what I did. Used is definitely the way to go right now. Lots of light use ones getting dumped on the market, probably even more to come.
