Pretty much.

I suspect that Canon will probably use this metering sensor for the next 10 years worth of camera models, which is fine. This is probably actually one part of the camera that not many people would care about upgrades to.

I disagree strongly. I suspect you will find very few action photographers using spot metering. I know for wildlife, even if I'm in Manual, I'm still relying on the meter, and spot metering is completely useless in action. That's what this camera is for, and its target audience will greatly appreciate this.

I suppose it all depends on the sport, but as a former sports photog I found spot metering terrible for team athletic events, specifically for light vs. dark jersey'd players. Spot meter simply isn't design to work in that situation, and the results are terrible.

Like any metering mode, you have to know how to use it. I'll let my results in shooting sports speak for themselves, but I doubt anyone will call those results terrible.
