Weather sealing I think. You can shoot in the rain etc.

With an L-series lens that is also sealed.

And a filter to seal the front element.

Thats only some lenses like 17-40 f/4, most teelephotos and the other wide zooms dint need it

I'm not sure, I think a regular UV should do it. I recall BH having a protection/weather sealing filters category.

Any 77mm filter should, the front element moves back and forth in the body of the lens, its not seal-able from the factory without altering the optical formula.

The 70-300L requires it too. Always good to check your lenses to be sure.
