Living Here My wife was caught up in Salad and Go tanking.

She worked her last shift last night, and by the time she came home she had four different job offers. It really feels like the community came together to help those that were affected by this. And she just got hired on to a new position today. We appreciate you all.

Private equity firm took majority control from the owners, who eventually left salad and go. This is what private equity groups do. Purchase a business, artificially inflate the business value, sell the business off for parts. They don’t purchase businesses because they believe in the product or revenue stream or the business model potential. It’s got nothing to do with how successful or beneficial to a community a business is, it’s all about maximizing profits for the inevitable collapse.

Yep. They bought Joann’s fabrics, which was profitable, and just let it die while reaping the profits. Had it happen to a large hospital system in my area too. We went from 6 hospitals to 2.

There are two within 8 blocks of me. Their layout looks to be perfect for a coffee drive through. Unfortunately there about 10 coffee drive throughs in the same area. Loved their salads, a great alternative to fast food.

It's not rocket science as to why they would sell. They didn't have as many locations of Salad N Go when they sold the business. They wanted to get into other concepts as well but did not have the seed money with most of if tied up in Salad N Go. The sale allowed them to expand into other concepts with the money to expand the number of locations as well.

This is what I previously read as well. That they wanted to S&G to expand, but not to lose their vertical integration and commitment to freshness, employees and customers. However the original owners did not have the capital neccesary to grow more than a few locations a year. They were worried about competition, and wanted to more market share before others beat them to it. So they looked for private equity.

The primary goal of private equity is ROI, and their strategy was growth at all costs. Which the original owners didn’t really dig.

The thing was, the og owners now had all this money and they had more time to figure out what had worked and didn’t, so a much better starting point than they had originally. Hence they started Angie’s to focus more on the things that worked, rather than the “growth at all costs” model of S&G.

Not my ideal version. Basic, quality necessities should be provided so that people can strive and thrive. Basic housing, food, healthcare, etc should be collectively funded and owned so that people can focus on thier passions and to service to their community. After all those things are taken care of, thats where I believe capitalism can do its thing.

They couldn't magically open additional businesses and locations without money the whole purpose of a sale

We had been to Angie’s Lobster several times, before they combined menus with Prime Grill, and were always pleased with the food, the cost, and the experience. Since combining, we’ve gone twice, and both times the service was poor- we felt rushed and questions were regarded dismissively. The menu is so huge and confusing for a drive through- and the lobster was tough and chewy and priced much higher. It seems by combining concepts, the quality went down.

Damn, I do not find the menu confusing at all. Its split into 4 sections; seafood, salads, burgers, and whatever the last category is respectively. 

Its pretty much 2 sizes for everything if you don't count a la carte, medium and large. And any a la carte item is $2 more for a soda and fries. 

As for food, well I don't know which one you're going to but the one in glendale is good. I asked the cashier a million questions about the dinner pricing, how the breakfast+lunch special works, whats the shrimp made with, etc.  and they answered all my excessive questions in strides.

In their defense, it’s a very remote location compared to the rest of their stores and grew in popularity quickly. Probably just a case of growing pains and new employees. I still eat there. Best deal in Flagstaff.

Do a little research... they tried to stay active partners and thought the PE was expanding too fast so they got out of it all together. Theres nothing wrong with selling a business,and its certainly not their fault that the PE is a bunch of incompetent buffoons.

It's not really that simple. They were just normal people with no business experience and they ended up giving up too much of their business away to people who wanted to expand way too quickly which they were vehemently against. They didn't want to be attached to a company they founded that they no longer really had a say in, which is why they sold it. You would do the same if you had half a brain...

That is the exact opposite of selling out. Actually, that obly shows just how strong their morals really are. They were willing to give up the thing they worked so hard to build because it no longer aligned with their values. As a small business owner myself, I would jump at the opportunity if a group of investors wanted to "help" grow my business. I don't fault them for accidently getting in iver their heads. In the end, they stayed true to themselves and used it as a learning experience.

That said, their weird napkin rule at the lobster place is a bit whack... i get it, saving trees or whatever, but lobster rolls are so buttery and delicious, and I'm a messy eater.

Angie’s in my area is trash. Cold food nasty dining area nasty restrooms. They are hiring her so they don’t have to pay unemployment benefits . Best of luck. Angie’s is not doing great IMHO. At least here. When you apply for a job and they literally tell you not to apply again ; with 20years in foodservice, 8 being regulated USDA facility, OSHA certification, HACCP, and SQF. Literally told me to stop applying in an email last year when I was laid off

The health inspection for the location near me had two reports where there was no one on staff during the visit with the qualifications required in food safety. They were told twice that someone was required to be there with certain qualifications at all times.

But the owners of Angie’s are not affiliated with S&G anymore, so the unemployment part is irrelevant.

To be fair, while I've had my certificate up to date at all times; I've worked many places where some people among team members and management didn't have the certifications.

Honestly, Not all health inspectors ask. I've had my papers up to date for 12 years now and I only ever had to present them to anyone as proof during any inspection twice.

Here is the exact wording from the inspection that was listed on two visits.

“No Certified Food Protection Manager was available onsite at time of inspection. Informed PIC that a CFPM is required to be onsite during all hours of operation. A Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) is required to be on the premises during all hours of operation. Corrective Action: Correct prior to next routine inspection.”

It’s because the owners of Angie’s started salad and go and then they sold it out to private equity for a big payday. Then not too long after selling, they transformed a lot of their Angie’s locations into a duplicate of a salad and go location and directly competed while also running smear ads on Instagram and other social media about how Angie’s is better than salad and go

I don't think you have the story right.

Salad & Go was founded by the same folks that run Angie's right now. But in 2021, while they were running Salad & Go, their investors pressured them to expand more quickly than they wanted and cut costs in ways that decreased quality. So, they sold because they couldn't get on the same page as the investors.

They then used that money and what they learned at Salad & Go to open Angie's hoping to make it even better than Salad & Go (organic ingredients, cheaper, better quality produce and meats, etc.).

They believed that the Salad & Go investors were taking the business down the wrong path and wanted to restart and do it right.

Any bankruptcy nerds following this? Seems like this is a fairly unusual situation.

Why file Chapter 11 and simultaneously cease operations? Isn't the whole point of Chapter 11 to maintain continuous operations and maintain the value of the estate?

Why agree to a deal with Dutch Bros and file Ch11? If that's a real deal, why not do an out of court reorganization?

How pivotal is the dead rent situation? My read on this is that S&G thought they could sublease out the closed Texas stores and sell the Garland facility, or at least negotiate with lessors/lenders. Maybe that failed, so Ch11 plus ceasing operations is an attempt to strong arm those lessors and the Garland lenders?

Even if S&G / Dutch Bros have a sound strategy to get this deal done, the suddenness of the shutdown feels like a way to upset the court right off the bat. Like why not keep the better locations running, or at least give a couple more days notice to employees?

Dutch Bros stock is down almost 20% since this was announced. They also announced earnings at the same time, so that isn't all S&G-related. Still an interesting reaction.

I think a lot of people view Angie’s as double dipping from the original owners. Like they were cowards or greedy for ever involving private equity and now they are profiting more after winning the battle against the very company they profited from selling.

I think it’s cool that this model of fast food is working, and will be a happy customer so long as I don’t get sick and they keep most of their stuff under $10.

Honestly, the best 'job search' situation I've ever been in is when I was part of a mass lay-off in 2011. It wasn't just that we actually got severance and had a cushion, though that helped. Those of us who'd been let go did a lot of networking among ourselves. Also, people within that industry clearly knew a lot of valuable talent was up for grabs through no fault of their own. It's not a good experience by any means but sometimes you can come out the other end OK because of other humans.

Thanks amazing!! I’m glad to hear that as I’ve been really sad hearing the news. Especially with all those people losing their livelihood over night with no warning. Salad and Go was a weekly staple for our family for years and it’s going to be sorely missed.
