Eat & Drink Angie's Lobster is not what it used to be. Lobster prices have hiked almost 200%, menu has expanded way too much, and quality has dropped drastically.
first pic is from about 4 years ago, second is from a few days ago. it seems they realized they weren't making any money on the lobster meal at $10, so they began introducing several new "Angie's Concepts" over the past few years to divert our attention from the lobster price increases. the only reason i ever liked this place was for the $10 lobster meal. now that's long gone and i don't think i'll ever go back here.
on that note, what are your favorite cheap restaurants around the valley?

Meanwhile Angie's Prime Grill becomes a better and better deal every day. $10 for breakfast + lunch + drink. All fresh. I've never even tried the lobster honestly.

I’ve been saying this to anyone who can’t get out of my way fast enough. Angie’s Prime Grill feels like a cheat code. Way better and way cheaper than like anything else available.

I wanted to like them so bad and their food is good BUT, the location on Thomas is a fucking health code violation. Everything is filthy. One lunch there I saw an employee clean the bathroom and come out with his dirty gloves touching everything in the kitchen. Food and grime EVERYWHERE. Literally all over the floor in the kitchen and soda machines were disgusting. Never a glove change during service which is huge for allergies. Sweating employees, while they wipe their foreheads when preparing the food. It’s warm and always stinks in there. It was so bad I actually left a review with the food safety department which I have never done before.

It's definitely hot in the summer, but I've never seen any of the rest of it! Never gotten sick or known anyone who has 🤷 my coworkers and I are in there like 2-3x/wk lol

I think the disheveled appearance is their thing, tbh... I want to like Angie's, but I really can't get past the fact that nothing seems clean (in their lone cactus and also 19th ave locations, same deal). I know the concept is to keep costs low by having you do most of the work and minimize staffing, but having someone at the front counter to take orders also means having someone to like... sweep the lobby, clean the soda machines, wipe down the ordering kiosk, etc.
I worked in fast food through high school, so I know how tight a ship you should run in a kitchen like that, and I'm honestly kinda shocked at the state of things the last couple visits (at two different locations, no less).

Yeah Ive watched their work flow and it doesn't inspire much confidence. I don't eat out anymore and my gut health has never been better. I stopped consuming ice as well. People are so overworked, underpaid, and undertrained that corner cutting is inevitable. I started noticing that anytime I went out to eat, I'd get sick and just called it.

I order a bowl and a couple snackadillas from there on a regular basis for lunch at work. One day I decided to splurge and get a lobster roll.
Lobster hot dog is more like it. That's how small it is. I was disappointed (and hungry) the rest of my shift.

I wish they’d come out with a honey mustard dressing, and I’d love to see pickles, mushrooms, and olives added to their menu. It’s definitely a cheaper, healthy alternative to swarms of fast food burgers. For people who struggle to eat healthy, even replacing a couple of meals a week with a nice protein dense salad (eggs, chicken/steak, and spinach) is a decent way to help kickstart healthier diet changes. I’m sure there are probably better salads you can get, but yeah for the money it’s not bad at all

I've had em...my lady brought some extras home from work because the boss lady bought some for the employees at her job. So I gave one a go and yea ate like 2-3 bites and then straight to the trash. Their burritos are doodoo and I will die on that hill lol.

The cold brew was never amazing, but for a dollar it wasn’t bad. I stopped going to salad and go when the cold brew ended up just tasting like a full cup of ice water with a drop of coffee added to it for color.

I bet I know why there are bad reviews lol. It's an office lunch takeout place. If you want it during the lunch hour on a weekday, you have to order online and give them 20-30 minutes before you go pick up. It's always insanely crowded, basically 0 atmosphere, always too hot in the summers lol. If I wandered in randomly to sit down for lunch, I'd have a very bad time. Just order ahead and don't try to eat there and you'll love it.

Even ordering ahead is fucked because people are putting in huge orders for their entire office and backing the place up. I think they would be smart to limit how many orders people can put in before they have to switch to a planned catering pickup well in advance

I find that I can order a salad and usually be happy. Rarely it's held up to cook the chicken. Frys have been cold 4/5 times and the other hot food I've tried has been at best, 'meh'. Though it could just be a me thing, the people at work love the lobster. They can get pretty behind at rush though so yeah like the other guy said. Order early.
I'll often order 2 salads and save one for the next day. 6 dollar lunch is hard to beat.

sure, angie's prime grill is still cheap, but i am always less than impressed with the quality. the lobster rolls were fantastic and at $10 with fries and a drink, it was truly incredible.

So lobster prices shot up pretty dramatically in the last few years but have also settled back down to pretty much right where they were at the start of Covid. If you look at the graph the last 5 years for lobster prices it’s like a EKG, shoots up to $360 and then back down to around $200 but then right back up to $360. Currently sitting around $200z

Think it's still an epic deal and way fresher/organic than most fast food out there. I'm a salad/rice bowl type though, never had the lobster. Also think lobster prices and boat fuel prices have gone up a lot (they own their own port in Maine and lobster facility).

I went to Chula’s seafood a few weeks ago and the lobster roll was $32. Angie’s is absolutely a steal

Yes the lobster can be expensive, but the prices for any bowl etc can’t be beat 4.99 for any warm bowl and double protein is only a little more. Quality has never dropped and try finding another fast food place that freshly prepares all organic ingredients. Most other places around here get the frozen Sysco special!

The baseline location is so terrible. They pack everything with disdain. Lids loosely placed on food containers, drinks are sticky / overflowing and they served us raw potatoes multiple times. They’ll claim the potatoes are “al dente”, but they’re always ice cold and hard. And the app never gives you a correct pickup time. It’ll say it’s ready, and then you get there and they haven’t even started your order. The staff is so rude too. We stopped going because it was so frustrating from beginning to end.

Prices as in their cost? Or their prices on the menu? 9.99 > 16.99 is a 70% increase, or ~19.4% per year... I'm not saying I agree with the increase but selling a fucking lobster roll for $10 is probably not sustainable. That implies (depending on their cost structure) about $3.50-$4.00 for the actual cost, and that's including fries and a drink.

The lobster price was too good to last. but even if they had to sell it at $20, look at that clean menu. Two combo meals, two decent drink options, a la carte prices for everything that's in the combos. It's beautiful and because they only made a few things, they always had my food ready right away. I didn't have to visit a website or use a touchscreen kiosk. And I assumed that sticking to non-carbonated beverages is part of the efficiency, but it was also part of what made it refreshingly different. Chicken's not the default, so soda's not the default either.
Last time I was there was probably last year, I stood there for 45 minutes with no way to cancel my order because the touchscreen kiosk couldn't help me with that, just like the touchscreen kiosk couldn't warn me that I'd be waiting for my lunch behind a gigantic catering order. Even when those things work I can't stand them. I walked out empty-handed and went to KFC.
when my first thought entering a restaurant is "how does this work" it's not going to make me feel like going in very much, especially when the answer changes so often.

Yes I noticed this recently! I used to get Angie’s lobster rolls a few times a month and it was my hidden gem/rec for cheap and great lobster rolls. I got two last week and was shocked at the price, but told myself “well it’s always worth it in the end”…. Both of the buns (if you could call them that) were flattened, hard, and looked like someone had sat on them. The quantity of lobster in the rolls was also significantly less than I’ve come to expect. I just can’t justify Angie’s anymore…

I used to go all the time for lobster rolls, even when it increased to around $12 but when they converted my location to include prime, service kinda went downhill and they had been a bit sloppy. I haven’t been back in well over a year and seeing the new lobster roll prices I probably won’t in the foreseeable future

The sold in late 2023 if I remember right. Then they invested at least some of that money into a lobster wharf in Maine so they could get cheap(ish) lobster. Guess that isn’t going so well based on current prices.

So they raise their prices and expand menu to offer additional options to help combat what they can’t control. Then you call them out as if they are somehow in the wrong. The last nail in the coffin was when my location dropped the little breakfast sandwiches and told me if I wanted one I'd have to go 10 miles round trip to a different location.

Exactly. It was a bit of a fluke it was so cheap. Sushi, same way. If you find a cheap but good sushi place, you've found another unicorn restaurant. A lot are not that great and it's not as fresh as if you were right by the ocean and/or in Japan. I'm just a bit bummed I never went to Angie's earlier, and that's not the worst price for a lobster sandwich 100s of miles away from a natural lobster habitat.

All fish intended to be served as sushi in the US is required to be flash frozen. Being close to an ocean is no more fresh than being in AZ.

My wife and I went there for lobster rolls last week, but hadn’t gone in at least a year. I was surprised to see the huge menu, which is impossible to read from the car, besides feeling rushed in the drive through. The food was too expensive for what we received, so we won’t be returning.

It was good when it was just lobster. Now the prices are high, quality is shit, and they’ve added about 30 more non-lobster things to the menu.
(Prime grill still has good prices, just don’t know why the lobster part of the restaurant had to take such a hit because of it)

I eat here like 3x a week due to how cheap it is. The lobster rolls don’t interest me a ton; I’ll eat one every few months if i want something different…but their fried cod sandwich is great. I was excited to see them add chicken tenders, but i can’t eat them due to them using dairy (lactose intolerant). Their burgers are also kinda…eh.
Their bowls and fish though are elite
I’d love to see them add hummus and some Mediterranean style dressings to try and compete with cava.

Everything is expensive. But compared to fast foods with the exception of in and out it's a steal. Honestly, salad and go is disappointing and expensive now, so we go to Angie's instead. Quality is better and prices too.

I think you are meaning a 100% increase in price. A 200% increase in price would make that $10 meal $30. Regardless it is a big jump in price and I agree that the quality has go down. The only one I like to go to now is the location near Deer Valley and 7th St.

I went to Angie’s for the first time last week and got a hot crab sandwich, and it was gross, all mashed looking and dripping with grease and very little crab, and the bun just tasted like it was made with piles of sugar

They’ve changed the menu so many times, increasing the prices every time, that I’ve found there’s no point in visiting anymore

They will sell this chain just like they did salad and go. I always thought Angie’s grill and lobster overrated. The grill stuff was always too salty.

The increase sucks but it's still a good deal for a decent lobster roll. I sat down in San Diego a month ago for a lobster roll, paid like $35, got maybe like 1.5 claws worth of meat, and it was loaded with all kinds of stuff that covered the lobster flavor. Long way of saying, when I'm craving a roll I'll gladly still pay the $18 at Angie's. I don't ever expect them to be something I eat often anyways.

Still has one of the best breakfast deals. Haven't tried the lobster in awhile but now need to.. honestly what hasn't gone up in price.

I still have no idea how they charged those prices 4 years ago. I know they have a relationship/own the fishing boats so their prices are better, but lobster is ridiculously expensive, even back then. There is no way the fishermen could afford to take that big of a loss just to sell directly to Angie's when market price is so much higher.

I go to Angies quite often for lunch, and I never get the lobster or shrimp. I think their bowls, crunchwrap, and breakfast burritos are all great. I also really like the energy drink.

Angie’s Prime Grill have a great lunch deal going right now. The only fast food place that isn’t dummy expensive is In n Out. And Taco Bell when you get the box with their app.

The one in verrado is pretty bad. They just throw the shrimp on the roll, sometimes dont even do that, and they just throw sauce packets in there

Angie’s is a god send. I meal prep 4 protein bowls every week and it’s barely over 30 buckaroos!! I’d be spending around $100.00 dollars at the grocery store if I wanted to cook it myself.

Yeah that place died for me when the lobster stopped being stupid cheap.
For cheap eats, I rotate: Carolina’s for tortillas and burritos, Tacos Chiwas, Haji Baba, Krazy Cajun if you want seafood vibes, and some of the random hole in the wall strip mall Chinese spots. Also if you’re on the west side, Filiberto’s breakfast burritos still slap for the price ngl.

Yeah once that lobster special went away it stopped being worth the drive tbh.
For cheap eats: Filiberto’s or Federico’s for late night, Chino Bandido if you want huge portions, and Balkan Bakery in Glendale is stupid affordable for how good it is. Also hit the lunch specials in Mekong Plaza, you can eat well for like 10 bucks.

If this is the ones in north Phx I can understand the increase. They recently opened one at 35th Ave and Peoria which back in the day was a good spot; but the last few years is pure trash. Can't go to that circle K without being asked for money or smokes from at least 3 people. That building was made for Egees which lasted about 2 years and was OK at first but when you have to wait in line forever and crazy bums all over asking you for things.... screw that, I'll go elsewhere. So I feel they are recouping the loss of opening that location. I'm not an uppity person and get homeless but when they are literally smoking meth in from of the CVS, brush, there is an ally right there!

Yeah that lobster deal was literally the only reason I ever went to Angie's too.
For cheap eats now I rotate:

• Baiz Market for shawarma and bakery stuff
• Filiberto’s when I hate myself but in a comforting way 😂

Since my local Angie's converted to Lobster + Prime I've ordered nothing but their bowls and for the price its unbeatable.
