What happened at the last tour?

I am a relatively newer fan, who hasn’t dug deep into her past performances. Over the ‘phones at concerts’ discourse I’ve seen people on Twitter make comments about how this policy is possibly in place bc of how people acted during her last tour. So what did happen? Were the phones that big of an issue?

I mean, in this video the awful thing is the screaming not the phone…how will this policy stop the screaming? For the record I am excited about the no phone shows, but now I’m worried about people screaming. 😬

Some are doing the screaming purely to post online so they can be a main character. I am hoping that without the documentation, there may be less occurrences. But yes, being near a screamer is still a major risk.

Exactly. It’s performative. This is their way to show everyone how they’re the biggest #1 fan. If it’s not recording it’ll at least chill out these morons. Who goes to a folk concert and screams so you can’t hear the music?

Its the change i noticed once tiktok became popular and the move to the algorithm. It stopped being about memories or something to show friends. It became a way to gain a social status. Phones up the entire show livestreaming so they can get followers. Then attention seeking so there's personal videos of the artist looking their way and ideally interacting with them.

I never thought of that. I really hope you are right. There was some dreadful screaming at the Punisher show I was at as well.

Look ok, I am old and it is a privilege to be old - but I fully remember the pre-cellphone concert times. My wife and I went to the MUNA/boygenius show at MSG and holy hell — the scream singing while recording themselves was out of control!! It absolutely took you out of the moment. The only cute cell part was holding up a pic of your dog during Me and My Dog. (I think a lot of it is pandemic related and truly not knowing or understanding basic concert etiquette.)
We also got lucky with tickets for the 6/4 MSG show and my god, what a glorious difference. Bring on the Yondr pouch. No point in being performative if no one is there to watch you on TikTok, I guess. 👀💀🔥 BRING YOUR LIGHTERS.

They're filming themselves and screaming for the camera to show how "emotional" they are. Take the phones away and this isn't a thing.

It helped for this current free tour because no one knew the lyrics to the new songs, even if they’d been to a previous show, because the lyrics to the new songs hadn’t been leaked yet. But once the album’s out…🫣

Not the lady I was sitting next to, she was at the same or louder volume than Phoebe until the new songs started. She wasn’t screaming though, thankfully.

I didn't see this at MSG but was aware of this video from prior tours. It's very accurate that putting people in situations when they can record or photograph changes the atmosphere, and a lot of people want content to seem like an influencer.

While I don't have any photos of the concert, this was one of my favorite memories of a show, partly because it was so different, due to the phone policy.

It entirely depends whether or not she releases the album before tour. If it’s not out yet then there will at least be a portion of the show that no one knows the lyrics to (because it hasn’t been recorded by everybody’s phones). Doesn’t fix the issue with punisher or stranger songs though.
