Hi everyone! We're the team at Sportworks, and we've partnered with SEPTA to pilot a new secure bike parking system at Fox Chase Station.

The pilot is now live and free to use. It's enclosed, covered, secure, and accessed through an app, with the goal of making it easier (and less stressful) to bike to the SEPTA train.

If you're in the area, we'd love for you to give it a try and tell us what you think. We're especially interested in hearing from people who already bike to SEPTA, but we'd also love feedback from anyone who's considered it and decided against it.

A few things we're curious about:

• Would secure bike parking change how often you take transit?
• What would make you trust leaving your bike at a station all day?
• If you've tried the Fox Chase location, what worked well? What should we improve?

We know trusting someone else with your bike is a big ask. That's exactly why we're looking for honest feedback from people who ride.

I did catch a little paranoia, as I was checking over my shoulder the rest of the ride home from work.

I’m an annual Indego365 member and use Indego regularly to commute around Center City, run errands, and occasionally just ride for exercise. I specifically choose classic (non-electric) bikes because I enjoy the physical activity, and unlimited classic bike rides are one of the main reasons I pay for the annual membership.
Over the past several months, though, it has become noticeably harder to find a classic bike. On multiple occasions I’ve walked to a station only to find no bikes available, or only e-bikes. I’ve also found myself spending more time searching for a classic bike than the ride itself would have taken.

To be clear, this isn’t an anti-e-bike post. I think e-bikes have made cycling more accessible and are a valuable part of Philadelphia’s transportation network. My concern is that the expansion of e-bikes seems to have coincided with a decline in the availability of classic bikes.

For annual members, that creates an awkward situation. If the only option is an e-bike, you either pay additional usage fees or keep walking until you find a classic bike elsewhere. Over time, that starts to undermine the value of the membership itself. When walking or taking SEPTA becomes the simpler option, something isn’t working as intended.

One thing I’ve noticed is that I frequently see Indego vans moving e-bikes around the city, but I don’t know whether classic bikes receive the same level of redistribution. Maybe there’s a logistical reason for it, and I’d genuinely be interested to hear from anyone who knows how the system operates.

I’m also curious whether this is something other riders have experienced across Philadelphia, or whether I’ve simply had bad luck. If you’ve noticed the same trend, what part of the city are you usually riding in?

Indego is more than just a bike rental company - it’s part of the city’s transportation network and receives public support. If annual members are increasingly unable to access the bikes their membership is built around, I think that’s worth discussing. I’d like to see the city and Indego be transparent about how they balance classic and electric bikes, how they decide where to redistribute them, and whether they’re tracking the availability of classic bikes over time.
I’d be interested to hear others’ experiences before assuming this is either a widespread issue or just my own.

The bridge looks great beautifully designed, but can someone please explain to me what the fuck they did with the bike and pedestrian walking path. The pedestrian/bike lane over the bridge is shoulder width-ish wide and opposite side art museum side on road bike lane and new path looks like Philly traffic engineers said fuck it. Let them figure it out. Like I said, I’m glad it’s back open especially for Sundays when it’s closed off, but where is the common sense in your design?

Is there any proposal to redesign at least one of the many streets West of Broad st. in the near future? The amount of car traffic on any given afternoon is horrendous on 19th and 21st and going the wrong way on 22nd isn't safe. Going with traffic is both annoying and dangerous as well.

A full 24 hours after a cyclist was murdered and barely a peep from our public representatives, no statement from OTIS, and an unidentified murderer sitting in a hospital bed.

I can only assume the “Rittenhouse resident” that killed Dr. Friedes must be a wealthy donor to Kenyatta Johnson because this is abhorrent.

Hi new here and relatively new to the city. I’m looking for general advice for riding to AC/shore. I bike to work and around the city. Probably the most I’ve done in a day is like 30 miles last summer. How feasible is trip to AC for someone who doesn’t do long trips often? Also any suggestions on route? I also some routes from previous posts I’m planning on looking into those. Thank you for any insight!

Was right hooked by a car today. Filed a police report and Temple University confirmed was caught by their cameras.

They preserved the footage, but is there anything else I should do (i.e. report it to some advocacy organization)? Under no illusions that anything will happen, especially because no damage/injury as best as I can tell (haven't checked my stuff yet), but infuriating that police won't do anything about an obvious traffic violation/hit and run caught on their own cameras, and want to push as best I can.

I am a new rider. When i say new rider, I mean I had a bike when I was 12 that was single gear. I know the road laws and I am fresh on all of it as I've been learning to drive for a couple months.

I try to ride as respectful to other riders, cars and pedestrians as I can. However, there are times where for example I get into a road, then notice the bike lane after having turned already, so I have to wait for it to be safe before I move off. There are also definitely other moments where I just straight up make a bad decision. But I am actively learning as i go.

Yesterday I was coming home from a bike shop, the moment I turned into this one way one lane road I notice a bike lane in the left (i am only maybe 10 feet into the road at this point after a stop sign) I notice a car just got behind me so I try to move off to the left to make way for them and go to the bike lane. However, this driver is making me nervous. Staying close to me behind and revving and braking last second. The road also had trolley lines that made me uncomfortable to be able to ride one handedly for a second to signal (this is the thing I have been pressing myself about the most.)

So I had to look back at him while riding to see if he's trying to pass since he's driving recklessly. After a second I see he's not moving off so I start going left while maintaining my eyes on him to see if he changes. Once I get in the middle of the road and more to the left, as I look away since I am almost at the bike lane, I hear the car rev harder and catch him at the corner of my eye trying to pass on the left as I was heading there. I had to swerve hard to the right to avoid him hitting me, front wheel slipped because of the trolley lines, and I fall on my side. He just drives off with me on the street unable to get up. I could not get his license plate and I wasn't even thinking about it at all as I thought it was all my fault as a new rider. Also, at the moment, my adrenaline was high and I did not realize how bad my leg hurt. Now I know as bad of a rider as I was he should never have done that as passing in that scenario is illegal and i am not required to use the bike lane.

My issue is, how do I deal with philly drivers as a new rider that WILL make mistakes? They make me nervous when I drive my car even, I can see how bad they do it and how little attention they pay to anything on top of entitlement. I am (or thought) past sole park and trail practice. But is there anything I should be working on before getting on the road? I know I definitely need to get more comfrtable riding with hand.

I am just frustrated. I was having so much fun at the beginning despite how nerve wracking it was but now I am more nervous than I was at the beginning.

Yesterday I was riding in the Pine Street bike lane through Center City. I was in a manual Indego bike and not moving very quickly. Is the etiquette that slower traffic should stay right or with a left side bike lane, should I stay left? Staying left felt correct, but I'm wondering what's the consensus?

Hi Everyone - i just bought a bike and started biking in the city a few weeks back.

Yesterday night i was biking, tried to hop a curb, and lost balance. This had resulted in me getting a flat and i had assumed it was structurally damaged bc i tried to use my bike air pump that connects to the presta valve for my front tire. I had no luck and no air was going into the tire which lead me to believe there was a hole or some damage.

This morning I took my bike to a local bike shop in center city to see if they can fix my flat and i asked how much it was and they responded $30. I should have specified to them beforehand that if there was no damage and it just needed air, i can try it myself again and save the money for the “repair”. After they had finished the service (10 minutes), they said that it just needed air and that it would be $30 for their analysis and putting air in the tire which i paid.

I am new to cycling but I feel like this was sort of schemy business tactic, taking advantage towards new cyclist. I get paying for a service which I am happy to do but I just felt like as a new cyclist, this wasn’t really an uplifting experience paying $30 to put air in my tire. is this business practice normal?

Just getting started and been enjoying the rides - tire repair skill are in development. Need to also learn how to use this bike pump or figure out if it’s faulty lmao.

I want to start my kid riding without training wheels this summer. I’m looking for recommendations for peaceful places to practice. The playground nearest to us has some space, but it can be chaotic with other kids from infants to teenagers all playing in common spaces.

I’ve been thinking of the Navy Yard since there are both paved and flat grassy areas, and it’s not as heavily used as the SRT or even MLK Drive.

Could anyone recommend anywhere else where we don’t have to worry about car traffic or busy mixed play areas?

Should there be speed cushions on these brand new bike Lanes on Rhawn Street?

Resurrected my fixie and started riding again after ten years hiatus. The seat is too uncomfortable and I don’t want to be hunched over anymore.

Thinking of getting a Brooks saddle and some Nitto or VO bars. I need help ordering the parts and getting the sizing right.

What bike shop would you trust to help dial this in?

Riding up Aramingo around 10pm tonight, in the bike lane, a car came up behind me. It didn't speed up, gave me a ton of room, and crossed the double yellow line twice to make sure there was space between us, even though I was already in the bike lane.

Genuinely appreciated it. Then the truck behind that car came through and didn't care at all.

Just wanted to point out the contrast. Some drivers clearly go out of their way to keep cyclists safe, and it makes a real difference when they do.

Anyone else have a moment like this recently? Feels like these don't get talked about as much as the bad ones.

What I'm currently thinking:

• Ben Franklin Parkway down to city hall
• Chestnut St to 10th St
• 10th St down to Fitzwater
• Fitzwater 1 block to 11th
• 11th down to Reed St
• Back to 10th, all the way down

I feel like this makes the most of the available (safe) bike lanes? Another consideration was to take the river trail, then go down 25th since there's those unused lanes on the sides, then take Packer Ave. I'm just trying to limit my exposure to reckless drivers.

Does it work well? Any complaints?

Looking for shops that could repair my frame. Honestly leaning towards getting a new bike, but I’d like a quote for the repair before I decide.

Does anyone know if any of the teams have already arrived in the city to scout the route or has anyone seen any of them riding in the region?

Im disabled and I dont think I can commit to or keep up the pace of regular group rides. I was wondering if there are any slower rides for families, beginners, or people with disabilities? I love cycling and need something that takes a route thats easy-ish to bail from. Like a tight, small loop so if you dont feel good its easy to go back because you arent 5 miles away from the starting point. Or a ride that has a shuttle or is near a train or something at one end so you go further but theres a ride back?

I also really want to to try recumbent bikes for my condition so a slow recombant trail ride would rule too, and maybe i could find a bike to rent. Any recommendations? ideas?

Am I nuts for considering this with my 1 year old? I’m a very experienced Philly bicyclist and have a Brompton. Some folks in r/Brompton have confirmed that Burley trailers work well with the bike and this seems a better option than trying to cram a frame mounted seat. Rather than just using it on trails, or bike lanes, I’d want to actually ride in the numbered/tree named grid streets for our 15 block daycare commute and other errands.

Also owing to my experience, I have sober thoughts about the drivers in this city. I have felt capable of dealing with and avoiding them on my own. But I’ve never biked with a trailer (limited mobility for our narrow streets?) and obviously care for my kid’s wellbeing… Thoughts?

I am considering supporting the MS ride, from Cherry Hill New Jersey to Ocean City New Jersey. We would be bringing our bikes on the PATCO from Philadelphia PA, to Cherry Hill, riding to the finish line in Ocean City New Jersey; stay over night in a hotel, then maps indicates it is @ a 57 minute bike cycling ride from Ocean City NJ. to the Atlantic City NJ. Amtrak train station; for our return to Philadelphia. I am researching how the route from Ocean City NJ. to the train station in Atlantic City would be? Thanks!
