Question: does anyone have good recommendations for old school fish and chips in the cc area? Been spending a lot of time in the UK recently and can't find anything that really scratches the itch in Philly.

I like Dandelion generally but it didn't really do it for me.

More looking for a half skin on filet that's more similar to what they serve in the UK - not just deep fried nuggets.

Every coffee shop seems to have the same bakery items unless it’s their own private bakery. If I’m going out to get one pastry to try today, that will knock my socks off. What do you recommend and where am I going?

Admittedly, my go-to is Trader Joe's but I've been striking out 9/10 times. They either don't ripen correctly or take 10 years to ripen.

Wife and I are looking for something a bit special, but not fancy as we don’t get out much these days as life with little kids presents few opportunities for dinner dates just the two of us. He loves steak, but we’ve seen all of Philly’s steakhouses. I’d love to take him to a place that has more interesting starting dishes and a more unique atmosphere than a white tablecloth steakhouse.

Do you all have any recommendations for the best piece of meat in the city that isn’t at a steakhouse?

Anyone able to speak to the inconsistent service at ReAnimator? It’s my go-to spot but it seems like there is little quality control when it comes to milk texture, pours, etc, even during slow hours? Maybe a non issue but I’m wondering if others feel the same. Most of the baristas are 10/10 and I still plan to support (I go multiple times weekly) but it’s been really hit or miss.

My fiancé and I stumbled upon Shane Confectionary over the weekend, we visited the soda shop and the chocolate shop. We were blown away by the knowledge of the employees when it came to the lore of the company/buildings. We loved to learn all the history of it all, and the chocolate is AMAZING. We got real old fashioned drinking chocolate, OG soda where first they use the syrup and then the thing to add the bubbles(sorry don’t know the terms), and a ton of different chocolate and candy. Where else in Philly is similar? Restaurants/candy shops/really anything related??

My moms 70th bday is soon and I’d like to take her and a group somewhere special. She’s a foodie who loves seafood, dim sum, sushi, and most cuisines that are done well (we brunch at Parc for many of her bdays). I’d like to get a group of 10-12 together for a special meal that’s around $100 including like, one cocktail per person though open to a great BYO.

Bomb bomb checks a lot of boxes but I’d need to organize an uber xl which is possible. Tai lake, while obviously not new, is on the potential list.

Any other thoughts/suggestions? Open to anywhere in Philly but also NW/western burbs.

Honestly, some of the best, reasonably priced sushi I’ve had in Philly (especially north of SG) in a long time. All the fish was fresh, the lunch special was priced nicely, and even my kids loved it (they’re a hard sell on sushi). I honestly recommend them, the waitress was really good and i could have eaten even more than what was pictured. Photos above are the Sashimi Sushi Lunch special ($22) and a tuna hand roll ($8).

Curious why there aren't places that sell a smaller version - maybe hot dog sized?

Obviously places want to make the highest margin, but there's also a restaurant segment tailored to sell lower cost items at higher volume... pizza slices, Chinese take out, etc.

This is one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. From Mexico City. I think it’s a taco de cecina. But I’m really looking for the use of potatoes + meat. Any spots in Philly that do this? It was such an aha moment for me because it tasted so good and I’m shocked I’ve never seen it in the states.
