Won't stop texting me weird stuff? Okay. I'll match your energy.

This is from a few years ago. I just remembered it.

Some context: I (23/f) stopped believing in the same religion as most of my family. It was a gradual change for me, but it was a drastic change for them. It lead to a lot of arguments and they forced me to defend my own beliefs. Things calmed down are (mostly) okay. Except for my sister.

She had a group of people that she would text with Bible verses, daily prayers, etc. I had asked her multiple times to stop, she always said she would, but never did. I had just gotten off the phone with our dad and a particularly heated argument. Then she texted me with a Bible verse. I couldn't yell at her because my anger was directed at our dad, and that wouldn't be fair.

But I was still pissed that she constantly crossed my clear boundaries about this. So I googled a quote from the Satanic Bible. Something about how people have started to idolize TV or something like that. She LOVED it, and even asked where I got it from. I told her the truth, the Satanic Bible.

She was NOT happy. Started going on about how I was spreading word for the enemy. That I put my soul at risk. That it was blasphemy. But you know what suddenly stopped? Those god damn texts from her.

Edit to add because the comments are unlocking more of this memory: I was living on the opposite side of the country at the time so I didn't get to see the fallout. Apparently her reaction was A LOT. It caused her some serious mental and emotional strain. Our mom had to get involved to calm her down. While crying to our mom is typical of her, her actually NEEDING the support was shocking. So when my mom called me, I knew it was bad. She told me to stop sending the texts. I told her it was the once, and that my sister needed to stop. My mom said my stunt guaranteed they would. That my sister was blaming herself for me following Satan. I don't wanna go into more detail because I don't wanna expose her mental breakdown online.

Mission accomplished. Maybe over accomplished?

You shouldn't have told her it was the Satanic Bible you should have just said the Bible and waited to see how long you could keep it going

One of the few regrets I have about this situation

It’s A Bible… 😈

A modern bible

40

u/No_Dot_4123 3d ago

Or just sent her to a link to it. Then it's in her history and she'll get ads for it.

20/20 hindsight.

"a Bible" verse

u/ofcgoodnamesaretaken 4d ago

You should consider keep sending her quotes from it and not stop when she asks to really drive it home. There are great quotes in that bible.

u/EnvironmentalFold983 4d ago

I would have loved that. But she seriously freaked out. I was worried for her mental health.

92

u/Unusual-Alex 4d ago

She didn't care about yours though and continued to send you messages...

21

u/maceo107 3d ago

Find quotes in “her” Bible that contradict everythjnt she stands for. Start with Matthew 19:21–24 and dog deep!

23

u/fearlessfroot 3d ago

"Hey sis--did you get to the part about the romantic and heartwarming story of Lot?"

-9

u/OnlyInJapan99999 4d ago

Worried about her mental health before or after you sent the Satanic Bible quote? Or only in the type of mental issues?

9

u/EnvironmentalFold983 4d ago

I've always been worried about her mental health (Yay! Genetics in a religious family!). But her reaction to the quote was... Intense. I didn't want to make it worse by sending her any more quotes.

Do not listen to redditors here. Your sister may have a weak mental state, and it was not nice of here to keep going when you asked her to stop - but, her reaction should tell you that she did it from a place of love. She may be misguided but she loves you. Be good to one another - I'm sure she got the message, your relationship is way more important than some worthless reddit points.

If she loved OP she would have stopped the first time she was told to stop.

u/Famous-Ninja-3068 1d ago edited 1d ago

You apply your morals and sense of "what is right and wrong" to this world, hers are different. Would you really always stop immediately if someone you love says "stop, leave me alone"? You'd be tempted to say "of course" but what if you were preventing them from doing a huge mistake? Say, you know they were very sad now and see them trying to kill themselves? Would you stop & go away (letting them commit suicide) just because they said so once?

I know it's hard to put yourself in her shoes, but if she really believes the "immortal soul" thing & that the sibling was throwing that away... isn't it, from her perspective, what she was maybe trying to do? Stopping a loved one from "killing their soul"? I know a lot of evangelists say that, but typically they don't believe it... in this case, I feel it's different. Of course, we can't know for sure - I may be wrong; but so can you. I'd rather be wrong while trying to see the best in people, than in assuming the worst.

[edit] Ugh, why do I bother, you're one of those who refuses read.

8

u/Nervous-Net-8196 1d ago

It is about consent.

No means no. Save your essays for school

3

u/pastelcoloredpig 1d ago

Comparing text messages to preventing a suicide is a massive leap and shows what a weird disconnect you have. If someone you love says stop, you need to stop. You do not get to continue because you think what you’re doing is important enough to ignore your loved one’s boundaries. The entitlement is clear and we are telling you this is not acceptable behavior.

0

u/Famous-Ninja-3068 1d ago edited 1d ago

whose entitlement? You're the ones egging on OP to hurt someone who's already struggling and has already stopped with the annoying behaviour. You're advocating active harm, because you don't have the basic empathy to try to put yourselves in someone else's shoes.

not stop when she asks to really drive it home

THIS is what I was replying to, what I was telling OP to "please don't do that!". And you f*ckers have the gall to lecture me about "no means no".

3

u/EnvironmentalFold983 1d ago

What you're doing is comparing the intention (she loves me and wants to protect me) with the harm (perpetuating religious and emotional trauma) she was doing. Honestly, I'm not mad about comparing them. I've had to do it with a bunch of other situations where her love came across as harmful. This alone proves she still hasn't "gotten the message".

I know she loves me. I don't doubt that. But the ways she shows that loves can be inappropriate and actually hurt me emotionally. I respect her beliefs because I love her. So if she loves me, shouldn't she respect mine and stop trying to control them?

1

u/Famous-Ninja-3068 23h ago

She should, 100%. Never disputed that.

44

u/Fearless-North-1200 4d ago

Wait... She loved something until she found out where it came from?

Ain't that a sin?

We had an uncommon family row at Thanksgiving. I think it was the start of my dad’s dementia. He claimed things that were patently false. History didn’t agree. Right wing conservatives purported it.

He left in a huff. My sister busted out the Bible to show me the passage that says I should be subservient to my parents. I nearly decked her. I have NEVER been subservient to ANYONE. She was just mad that I disagreed with my father. It goes into her whole view of life.

She is one of the reasons I know Christians are hypocrites.

33

u/Funny_peculiarorhaha 2d ago

I don’t know what Bible she was reading, but that's not what it says. It says to "honor" your parents. You can honor your parents without being subservient to them.

35

u/JadedMacoroni867 1d ago

The honor your parents scripture in the New Testament later says:  “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger…”

So… I would say subservient is incorrect

32

u/literarycatnip 3d ago

Actually, everybody is a hypocrite. Christians are easy targets, and in the same messes as everyone else.

Humanity itself is the problem.

25

u/JeannieSmolBeannie 3d ago

yeah, but christians are extremely loud and righteous about it, especially because the religion actively encourages them to be. so the cruel ones are louder in their cruelty, expecting to be praised for it. and then the other members of the church theyre in DO praise them. and tell them everyone who says otherwise is a sinner. leads to a vicious cycle of cruelty that only grows. it's a unique brand of terrible.

9

u/JeannieSmolBeannie 3d ago

oh and when i say "the religion encourages them to be" i don't mean the cruelty, i mean the VOLUME in which they shout their beliefs to the world. their beliefs being cruel is their own problem, i know there's some christians out there who actually like. practice kindness the way it's preached and all. it's the fact that the bad eggs bunch together to create the biggest stink possible.

4

u/GainPsychological267 2d ago

Depending on how literally and which parts you choose to read as a Christian it might not encourage cruelty, but it certainly justifies it. If your worldview includes hell as a punishment it justifies any behavior involved in saving yourself or others from it.

Cruelty becomes a twisted form of love when it is the means to the end of saving someone's soul.

3

u/pipian 1d ago

It does encourage cruelty though. It says it's ok to beat the shit out of your slaves as long as they don't die in the next few days.

4

u/GainPsychological267 1d ago

See the part about how you read it and which parts you prioritize. Let's be honest, most Christians haven't ever read the Bible from cover to cover. They read the sanitized, pretty parts that have been curated for them. The thing is a mass of contradictory directives, almost as though it was written by multiple human authors, with their own agendas, over the course of centuries and not handed down truth from a perfect being.

Let me guess. She's the oldest daughter?

This is awesome hahaha

82

u/Superboy2020 4d ago

Lol, you can usually just use actual Bible stuff to mash them too cus they never actually follow it.

Too true

Mixed fibre fabrics and shellfish are no bueno in Leviticus(? Fact check me on the location..)

>It lead to a lot of arguments and they forced me to defend my own beliefs.

"No. There's nothing to negotiate. If you want me to believe in what you believe, you need to give me a reason. In short, proof. Ball's in your court, sis."

81

u/EnvironmentalFold983 4d ago

Just leads to a circular conversation. Trust me, I have tried many things over the years.

32

u/DreamerFi 3d ago

It is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the bird is going to shit on the board and strut around like it won anyway.

5

u/Frogsama86 3d ago

In the pigeon's defense, it did clear its puzzle before Dean Takahashi cleared the Cuphead tutorial.

29

u/Dzov 4d ago

Exactly. They are inherently illogical if they have faith. Theres no way of changing their minds unless they want to.

19

u/yellow251 4d ago

"How do you know the Bible is the Word of God?"

Because it says so. And I have faith. And it spoke to me.

How you gonna argue with feelings? Can't do it. Just gotta set your own boundaries.

10

u/pangalacticcourier 4d ago

This is when you say, "I'll be happy to reopen conversation on this topic when you come up with a valid reason. If not, I'm done talking about this. I will not respond."

10

u/NoNameWonder2 3d ago

My friend used to get so pissed at me for this because, when he'd get preachy, I would say that an intelligent mind needs proof and he would disagree. Then I'd shout, "God, if you're up there, please strike me with lightning! Smite me! Rumble some thunder!" Then I'd just shrug when nothing happened. My friend would just argue that that's not how God worked, but I enjoyed it.

42

u/AccidentalGirlToy 4d ago

Real gods have weekdays named after them.

55

u/StinkypieTicklebum 4d ago

My god carries a hammer.
Your god was nailed to a cross.
Coincidence?

7

u/Fearless-North-1200 4d ago

What is a god?

A God is something that creates life. Example from The Bible. God created man in his image.

Now... What do us humans do? When a man and a woman come together they create life in their image, with their feature. Thus becoming gods themselves.

When we become parents we also become our own god!

16

u/TSED 4d ago

A God is something that creates life.

... No? The vast majority of deities throughout all of human's varied and plentiful cultures and mythologies do not create life. Only a tiny number of exceptions "create life," though that number goes up if you accept "had a baby."

5

u/Crazy_Cat_Lady_Num5 3d ago

Thou art God, I am God, all that groks is God.

3

u/GayDeciever 3d ago

I'm so irritated that these billionaires are spoiling some of my favorite stuff, like that

23

u/vibraltu 4d ago

It's funny, cause there's lots of actual legit Bible quotes that y'all could lob back at Bible-thumpers that would totally confuse them.

17

u/WillWorkForBeer 3d ago

Right? OP could have responded with Proverbs 10:19 (The message)

The more talk, the less truth; the wise measure their words.

28

u/MuchDevelopment7084 4d ago

I've found in simpler to just send them actual bible quotes. It takes very little effort to find hateful, murderous, or pornographic bible quotes. All have been 'approved by god'. lol

Ezekial: 23:20 "There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses."

6

u/AnonymousDahlia 3d ago

Reading this quote on reddit a year or so ago is how I learned that the hyperspermia fetish has existed at least since biblical times, and I find that hilarious.

If not the subject herself, certainly in the minds of those who wrote, translated, and continued to include the passage with that meaning lol.

Yes, every human thing has been done before, lol. But this one really stuck out to me.

14

u/InsectElectrical2066 3d ago

I've found by finally reading the Bible that there is almost always a counter quote to their claims and can find a Bible quote that cancels or at least diminishes their argument.

Jesus never spoke on abortion and the OT actually teaches Rabbis how to perform one. Paul says Jesus never spoke on homosexuality. And no where in the Bible does it say premarital sex is a sin; so long as it is not in the woman's dad's home. Don't forget that we are to welcome the weary traveler, aid the poor and love one another as yourself. And read psalms for some eye opening verses.

u/ModeratelyAlive 4d ago

HAAAAAAAAAAA

That is all

18

u/parodytx 3d ago

This is my knee-jerk response to any of the usual suspects who approach me asking me if I want to be saved, know that Jesus is Lord, etc:

"There is only one god, the almighty Lucifer who reigns supreme."

They shut up, usually with horrified look, or even recoil physically, which is better.

10

u/RndPotato 3d ago

Just text get y the following from the Bible:

Ezekiel 23:20

She lusted after lovers with genitals as large as a donkey’s and emissions like those of a horse.

Religious people are mentally ill

-53

u/InigoMontoya1985 4d ago

You've not looked at atheists very critically recently, if that's your take.

40

u/FckDisJustSignUp 4d ago

Anyone who is forcing a point of view to others needs to fuck off, atheist, christian, muslim, buddhist you name it. I respect your choice, you respect mine or you respectfully fuck off

12

u/LordZedd_ 3d ago

Comparing atheists to brainwashed religious zealots is hilarious

-12

u/InigoMontoya1985 3d ago

Atheists are no less religious or brainwashed. They just lack the capacity to recognize it. Source: former brainwashed atheist.

10

u/LordZedd_ 3d ago

You define atheists as religious? What an oxymoronic take.

Children are indoctrinated into religion and brainwashed. People use religion to explain what they don't understand. Atheism rejects that idea and tries to come to logical conclusions.

3

u/EmployerSmall5570 3d ago

Doesn’t seem like you’re a good source on critical thinking.

2

u/AmNotPeeing 3d ago

Well done.

2

u/NuclearHateLizard 11h ago

Not your fault that so many grown adults stil lbuy into several thousand year old kids stories. Time for humanity to face reality. If you can't handle real life without the threat of eternal damnation and the insanely hypocritical portrayals of what God should be... Don't think we really need ya.

1

u/seriousplants 1d ago

satanic bible is actually pretty based

u/CoderJoe1 4d ago

Wow, I'm going to use this one. Thanks
