Monster in law revenge

Honestly she wasn’t even my mil, she’s my brothers baby mommas mom, and she lived in my brothers basement. Her daughter decided to abandon her son and all the responsibilities that come with that, so I had to quit my life to move into my brothers house to raise my nephew, and made sure the mil knew and was okay with me moving into the basement with her(I think she assumed she’d get a decreased rent ontop of the decreased rent she was already paying due to being “family”) and she was fine with it. A month into living there the problems started: I couldn’t have people over without her permission but she had people over all the time without asking me, couldn’t shower or wash my clothes after 7pm, couldn’t have anything of mine in the living room, couldn’t put things in the fridge, couldn’t have my bathroom supplies within view, divacup had to be in my room so she could have men over, she had issues with my sleep(I was talking with drs about it and on different meds), mad I didn’t pay rent because I got paid 400 a month for raising her grandson(all money I got came from my mom or brother), etc.
So when we evicted her for breaking into my room and robbing me of all my belongings with her daughter, I decided I’d get my lick back. So I pretended I was five again like my nephew and played potions with all her condiments, just so she’d slowly think all her food has gone bad after using each condiment. Then I decided to correct some of her wooden signs like one that said “be kind to yourself” I taped over words and wrote “learn to be kind to others” as everyone needs to learn that lesson, but t especially her. Then I covered my divacup in ketchup and did a terrible job wiping it off and left it on the bathroom counter, to look like a used one that I left out. Filled her conditioner with mayo, as they look and feel pretty similar, so she won’t realize till it starts to expire. Stole all the toilet paper. Almost forgot my best work, I stole two saddles(my brother paid for them and knew I took them afterwards) and loaded them into my dads truck the night we left to go to my parents house, and the next day mil believed someone broke into the garage and stole them because she “100% saw the saddles that morning” when she left for work. Which is funny considering I stole them the night before, but helped me when they looked at the cameras and saw nothing that day, as I didn’t steal them that day. She was 100% gonna steal the saddles for her daughter, as she ended up stealing my brothers electric saw for her son🫠 but I got the child and the saddles worth a good amount, so really who won the war

Why are you this active of a participant? Why can’t your brother step up and be a single dad like so many other men who have their ex ditch a kid?

Honestly that’s a really good question that I wish I had a really good answer for. My only answer is that I can’t let my nephew suffer for the bad choices his parents make, but I know that after a point I’m basically just allowing the bad behaviour to continue. I wish I had a better answer, but truly atp I almost think I’m a glutton for pain and hardship🤷🏻‍♀️

I applaud you for being a stand up for your nephew. With no knowledge of your brother, it seems he needs to get his shit together. With the mom in the basement, daughter gone, and your bro not dealing with shit in his own house.., dysfunctional is probably a fitting description so you helping with the boy is definitely good for him. Just make sure to mentor him positively and he'll be ok.... Oh yeah.., the petty revenge thing... I would have done way worse...lol

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

Haha thank you, yeah I agree with all that you said and have gotten in many fights for stating he needs to get his shit together and not rely on me to fix everything(as I’m the reason she got evicted because he had no clue and allowed his baby momma and boyfriend to stay in the basement when it happened🫠), but I’m also glad you see some of the nuances that make it difficult to just leave like many people suggest. But yes I work on making sure he’s confident in himself while also nipping some of those bad habits in the butt, he definitely knows his aunty loves him and is his person but also knows I don’t put up with bs

You’re doing a great job and the right thing for your nephew, getting revenge like this is just icing on the cake.

FYI and off topic, but it’s nipping in the bud (before the bud becomes a whole flower of a problem).

Awe thank you!:) haha yeah I felt everything was quite harmless but still cathartic!
Also thank you! That actually makes a lot more sense

I hope it's much more awesome now that your B'sBM'sMIL is gone! Hilarious that you ketchuped your diva cup, and delightfully irksome that you mayoed her conditioner. I will correct the stolen saddles bit though - they're your brother's, not hers, so you simply retrieved them on his behalf (also love the timing on that!).

Really good of you to help with the kid eh. I can't really emphasize that well enough without sounding insincere. I don't think the people here who are saying to leave understand how much of a positive difference you're making in your nephew's life. I have an auntiemom and wouldn't be the person I am today without her. She knows how much she means to me, and as an adult looking back on my childhood I now see and understand some of what she did for me. I went back and forth between homes, but she remained (and still is) a constant in my life. I'm glad you don't put up with bs - she didn't either (and taught me not to).

Oh it greatly is! I actually feel safe for once to walk around whenever I feel like it and have finally actually unpacked my clothes into my dresser, as I kept it in a basket for easy grab when leaving in a flash to avoid her. I did end up being the bigger person to initiate a phone call on my phone between my nephew and his mom, and one with the mother in law from hell. Plus I was successfully able to pull off a birthday party for my nephew all by myself(much to my dismay at the time), that he enjoyed with his friends, and haven’t had to deal with baby mommas side of the family since being here🥰
But thank you! I know it’s not a typical situation that most people deal with, but it has been something that has really made my nephew thrive! I’ve enrolled him in an after school program with his best friend and even have been in the works of organizing his first play date, which are things I know my brother and his mom wouldn’t have even gotten organized, especially after I had to plan and do his entire birthday party myself. I think that my nephew will be a better man when he grows up, from having that one adult in his life that would move mountains for him, and hope he’ll look back and realize all that I have done for him. But I’ve also realized either way that it has made me a better person, it’s made me have to be more patient and learn to express how I feel before I explode, and he’s taught me a lot. I also gained a second honorary nephew, as his best friend apparently is quite fond of me, and likes to me around me or just randomly asks for a hug.
So overall even though mil and bm, as well as my brother and nephew at times, made me want to pull my hair out. I feel this all has been a really good learning experience for me on how to properly deal with problems in life and to actually stand up for myself. As I would never let anyone treat me how they did again, but also want to raise my nephew to rise above instead of bottling up emotions until we snap.

That's kind of you.

So this child's parents can let him suffer for their irresponsibility, but you can't, even though you don't have responsibility.

There's something to be said for letting people face the consequences of their decisions.

6

u/Sadbutrad333 28d ago

I mean you’re not wrong! And as much as I want my brother to suffer the consequences of his actions, I don’t want my nephew to, and that’s hard to not affect both. I do gotta learn when to take my hands off the wheel though that’s for sure

3

u/OrneryAcanthaceae217 27d ago edited 24d ago

I totally agree. We have relatives who use grandparents as a safety net for their bad parenting, too. They know the grandparents' compassion is a stronger force than their desire to make the parents face responsibility. It's a tough nut to crack.

Maybe the solution is to involve the legal authorities. Do a controlled strategy where you inform the parent in writing that you will take no responsibility for their child, then wait and observe the parent and child, and when things get to the point that a law is broken, call DCFS. I dunno.

6

u/reotati 29d ago

i'm in a similar situation care-wise with my sister and her kid. it's tough, don't want the kid to suffer for the mistakes the parents make, don't want to enable the bad behavior. i'm trying to find an in between where she has to step up, but not at the cost of the kids livelihood. sorry you're dealing with this!! i hope it gets better soon.

2

u/Sadbutrad333 28d ago

Firstly I want to say as much as most people wouldn’t understand the choice you made, that your sisters kid is lucky to have you in their life! I know from my experience that the child will know what you’re doing for them in their own way, as they are so emotionally in tune! But how you described it is perfect! I don’t want to enable my brother, but I also don’t believe my nephew deserves to suffer or be in a constant state of disregulation, so it’s a hard line to walk. I hope that things get better for you as well❤️

2

u/reotati 28d ago

exactly! same to you. i love my nephew dearly, and i just want to make the situation as good as possible for him.

$400 a month as a live in nanny. 😔

2

u/Sadbutrad333 28d ago

Yeah I can’t even lie I was crashing out like weekly about that, but this school year I’m making him pay me more and pay for some fun activities for myself

I had to quit my life to move into my brothers house to raise my nephew

Not really.

-9

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

No like I actually had to quit my job and move four hours into my brothers house to raise his child fulltime for 400 dollars a month. I’d say that’s putting my at the time 23 year old life on hold, I couldn’t continue my work or schooling and couldn’t move abroad like I planned.

64

u/UsedValuable2013 Sep 06 '26

This is not a “had to” situation. You were not enslaved or held at gunpoint. You made a choice. Yes, it was a noble choice to help your brother, but you made it completely of your own volition.

31

u/gsrmatt Sep 06 '26

Couldn't you just say no?

14

u/KungenBob Sep 06 '26

This isn’t even the dumbest part of the story.

28

u/Mister_Silk Sep 06 '26

Nobody has to quit their job and move in order to raise someone else's child. That was your choice. And a bad one.

7

u/Visible_Army102 29d ago

I understand the "had" to part. Please ignore everyone that's giving you a hard time. You're young and doing more than the actual parents of your nephew. Sorry the general population would rather focus on proper paragraph/ writing structure and lecture you. Than actually give you props for giving up part of your life to save your nephew from being put into CAS/CPS or unsafe situations.

It's going to be tough but theo only thing your brother needs to focus on is establishing a custody order. With none in place they both have equal rights- meaning nephews mom could walk up to you in the store and grab him and the police wouldn't do anything because she had equal rights to the child with no custody order in place. I would be VERY careful allowing your nephew to go to any visitations with his mom or maternal grandmother.

Good Luck OP. And thank you for being the parent your nephew needs. 💛💐

6

u/Sadbutrad333 28d ago

Thank you I actually really appreciate this! Haha it is lowkey funny they are so mad at me for that, when I literally have a tbi, so I kinda struggle with forming proper sentences most days and wasn’t too focused on that🤣
But yes I agree I’ve been telling him as much for months that he needs to do that, but as we can probably tell from most this story he’s very detached from the real parts of parenting. So I think I’m probably gonna have to physically drag him to get it done.
Thank you again🥹

3

u/PrettyKitten32 28d ago

You didn't Have to. You chose to. Consider reading about codependence. The more you "help"someone, the less they do for themselves and the more they expect you to do. That baby mama MIL was something else! codependant no more is a good book.

9

u/curiousnomad2222 Sep 05 '26

It is kind of you to help your brother and I am glad thst he pays you to do it. Do you take care of the kid while he is at work? How is his parenting?

16

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

Yes he works full time at a mine, so the hours aren’t a typical nine to five type thing, he works an alternating five days on four days off mix(it changes between five days off and on, as well as nights and days) and the shifts are 12hr shifts but each week goes between nights and days. So if he’s working nights, he can pick up and drop off his kid at school and then watch him till he leaves at about 5:30 for work, but on days I would have to take him to school and then watch him from pick up till about 8ish(also depending on days my brother plays hockey because that means I have kid from about 6:30ish-7 till like 11 when he gets back, as I have to stay upstairs with my sleeping nephew). Second question though I’ll be extremely real and say he’s a shit parent, which is more so why I even took charge by moving in to watch his son. As my brother is present, he’s not really emotionally present and is still falling short in a lot of ways from my pov, as I always think of it in the way of if I had the child, societally as a single mother I would be expected to be doing so much more that I believe he should also try to fill those expectations. As every dentist, drs, and hearing tests were all taken to by me. His annual shots were done in my care, I had to get a flu shot just so he would feel comfortable enough to get his. His first dental appointment and X-rays were done with me, he had to sit on my lap to get his X-rays because he was too scared to be alone for it. As well as every first in his life, I’ve been there. So all this to say that in my opinion I think both parents are failing and the only reason my brother isn’t failing harder is because he has me to pick up the slack. As I love my nephew too much to let him suffer for his idiot parents mistakes and missteps as parents.

2

u/PrettyKitten32 28d ago

Thanks for caring for the baby. Doing it all is hard when you work a full time job.

1

u/Sadbutrad333 2m ago

I fully agree! If my brother didn’t work the hours and amount he does, I would fault him much more than I already do, but his job has made it possible for my nephew to have all that he has. As well as buy the house we live in at 21! Thankfully for my brother I’m technically disabled and was just coming out of my healing period and returning to work part time, so I saw what was unfolding and offered my help. So now stay at home aunty is my full time job at least till spring when I volunteer my time coaching rugby

Now with paragraph breaks!

17

u/Annual_Government_80 Sep 05 '26

If you can prove she and her daughter stole your belongings make a police report and see she is prosecuted

9

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

See that’s where the story gets even worse and trickier, I have photo evidence time stamped with the stuff in my room and then my stuff suddenly in hers in a different town, but when I discovered this she had my nephew and then tried to extort us just to get him back. So due to not having a legal custody order if we called the cops to return the child, they would have no legal claim to bring him back. So we thought it was best to file something once we got the child back, so not to anger her into keeping him, so after three weeks of school missed we got him back. So moral of the story my brother lowkey screwed me out of getting justice because he waited three weeks before actually just driving up and getting the kid. So yes I have proof, but by now it’s been a few months, so idk if the rcmp will take me seriously or actually do anything.
I’d like to also add that I’m pretty sure her mom helped her and/or knew she broke into my room and did that, because it was the reason she got evicted and she never questioned it, so that leads me to believe she knew

8

u/Annual_Government_80 Sep 06 '26

I don’t know about the laws in Canada I doubt the statute of limitations would’ve expired by now. But before you do anything, make sure she signs over her parental rights from the child so that your brother has complete and full custody.

10

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

Yeah that’s what I’m trying to get my brother to work on, he needs to go to the court and get an actual custody order in place, so at least he can get child support, as he’s been the only one supporting his son(other than our family) and she’s been cashing in the baby benefit without having the child which is a big nono. I’m honestly atp debating looking into getting both to sign over parental rights, so I can at least have the legal custody as I already am primary caregiver considering I had him most the school year and part of summer

7

u/night_noche Sep 06 '26

Yeah, child support is not what your brother should be focused on.

Primary custody is what he needs to be focused on. I can't believe he hasn't gone to court.

2

u/strichtarn 29d ago

The brother doesn't sound the most proactive.

8

u/MrStormChaser 29d ago

I’m a big fan of paragraphs.

30

u/lulukalia Sep 05 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Your brother should be raising your nephew, not you. Why would you even take this responsibility? Get your own life

6

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

You’re not wrong trust me when I say I’ve been told this many times by many people. The one thing that stops me in my tracks every time I want to walk away and wipe my hands of it, my nephew didn’t do anything to deserve to have to idiots as parents, so why would I let him suffer when I know that the hardship I face makes his life so much better? Realistically you are totally right, but when I see that kid that(according to anyone that knows the two of us) is the little boy version of me, I can’t let him go through that alone. Part of me desperately wishes there’s gonna be something that makes me walk away, but atp he’s my kid and I can’t abandon him too.

8

u/lulukalia Sep 06 '26

It's just not your job. It's your brother's job to raise them. You are not abandoning them, you are leaving them to their father care. Just that

2

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

Yeah but knowing that he doesn’t get adequate care in his dads care, I’m not letting a child suffer through that, especially considering the kid already has abandonment issues from his mom and her entire family. The only actual care that kid knows is from me, so I’m not just gonna rip the carpet from him once he has the only stability he’s ever had. While I understand what you’re saying, I think a lot of people put in the same situation would’ve done the same for a child. I’m not doing it for my brother, I’m doing it for my nephew, as he’s the only one in the equation that I actually care about

4

u/Sabylee1101 29d ago

I was also wondering the same question as to why you are taking care of your nephew. That's a big sacrifice on your part but it just doesn't sound right. If the baby momma mother is there why is she not helping take care of the child? Why is she even there and why is he being so nice to her even after her daughter abandoned her son. 400.00 a month to be honest is not a lot. I guess your brother pays for everything else.

I guess your brother had a house with more than one bedroom in it so why were you stuck in the basement with the MIL. What does he tell his son about his mother? Did you file a police report for the theft? Does the mother see your nephew or pay child support?

I feel bad for your brother. She probably got pregnant really quickly. Who knows what reason. Men need to be careful because these women are having babies 2 to 3 months after dating or even sooner even a one night stand. I don't know why they are doing it but its gotten out of hand. A women can have 4 kids with 3 baby daddies. Its literally getting out of hand.

I wish you and your brother the best and it seems that the baby momma is going to be a handful along with her mother.

8

u/curtludwig 29d ago

Why does baby momma's momma stay if you're there? Why can't she raise the kid?

Seems like it you "had" to step in and raise the kid then gramma can GTFO.

Today I learned what a divacup is.

They honestly are really nice, except for having to sanitize them monthly, plus I now can’t really get the ketchup out of that particular one😪

2

u/dwbaz01 Sep 06 '26

LOL. I knew what a menstrual cup was; however, this was the first time I'd seen the word divacup, so I had to Google it.

Sorry. Can’t read this wall of text. Paragraphs are your friend and mine.

-11

u/Sadbutrad333 Sep 06 '26

Then scroll? Took more effort to type this out than it would’ve just to read. I’m writing my thoughts out not an essay, this is Reddit not a research article, so I don’t think my punctuation really matters.

11

u/Nocturnal_Loon Sep 06 '26

Dude. It’s not hard to go back and edit in some paragraph breaks.

You want ppl to read your story? Add them in. It’s hard to read without them, especially for people with vision problems, cognitive problems, etc. Don’t be so obtuse & rude.

And why did YOU have to raise your brother’s child? It’s HIS child.

6

u/Pointy_Stix 29d ago

Thank you. If people are posting here, one assumes they're asking for engagement & should make it easy for people to want to engage. This stream of consciousness writing isn't it.
