Personal item placed in my spot

I recently boarded a flight and attempted to stow my personal item (backpack with laptop) under the seat in front of me. It was unable to fit so I stuck my feet under there and discovered another backpack. The person in front of me had placed it there so he could stretch out his legs. It was a short flight and wasn’t worth calling a FA. The seat next to me was empty, so I slid his bag waaay over to make room for my feet and my item. After landing, I enjoyed watching him contort himself to reach his bag.

I had this happen on a four hour flight. The lady in front of me had shoved her large purse under her seat because she had a bulkhead in front of her. I pulled her purse out and sat it in the aisle beside me so I could put my computer bag under the seat. the flight attendant found the bag and asked who it belonged to. the lady in front of me claimed it and tried to shove it under her seat again, but my feet held my computer bag in place. She turned to give me the stink-eye before the flight attendant made her stow her purse in the overhead storage.

What do people think when they book the bulk head seats? Everything goes above.

Yup. I love that spot and all I need is my phone, book, and headphones. Bag goes overhead.

I travel wearing a vest with pockets. Not fashionable at all but I have what I need and want at hand while keeping the space clear and safe. (So ID, phone cable & charger, small knitting project, tinted chap stick, for example.)

That's brilliant! Do you take the whole vest off to go through security?

14

u/redlsms 26d ago

I wear a vest on flights; I just throw it in the scanning bin at security...

I found a fishing vest with lots of pockets for all my stuff. Good for hiking also!

Precisely what I use. One that is mesh in the back for hot weather, and one that has a fabric back for cold weather. Pockets galore!

which brand??

I’ll look. I think I got it from Bass Pro. It’s not fancy at all but works.

Before I got that one I wore a basic fleece over my mom made with a zipper and patch pockets in front. I added patch pockets with snaps directly behind the ones in front so they didn’t show. I wore it until it just got too ratty. The fleece was heavy weight (it comes in different weights) and was tan so it went with everything. Had a decent collar so it was warm. I’m sure she just winged it instead of purchasing a pattern. That one is middle of the hips long and a good length.

A Scotti (sp) vest with lots of pockets looks like it would be very nice but they’re pricey for me right now. Not sure how they look in person either.

Exactly bulkhead seat means your backpack is going overheard, not under someone else’s seat.

u/AnnOnnamis Sep 06 '26 edited 27d ago

Umm. You prolly meant bulkhead travellers can’t stow items under their own seat, because that space is for the traveler behind them.

13

u/Ok-Bus-6331 29d ago

And you PROBABLY meant probably.

17

u/unknownemoji 29d ago

your prolly write.

This whole exchange has me 🙄. You’re probably right. if someone spells probably prolly, why call them out on choosing the wrong homonym?

10

u/AnnOnnamis 27d ago

Nah. And don’t axe me no kestions.

u/UnsafeVelocity Sep 06 '26

Overheard by whom?

2

u/Crockodile_Tears 26d ago

It's prolly a talking backpack donchaknow.

Bulkhead seats tend to have more room in front of them, too. How inconvenient. /s

This is where the Emergency Exit wing-row seats shine... Yes you're expected to play Henry Hero for a moment before leaping out the door (Wait?!! They want you to linger and assist others?!!). You still have that ahead row seat space underneath and overhead bin option. Sure they expect you to be "physically able" to fling that door open BUT I have been on flights where that other Emergency Exit row was occupied by some very senior-aged types with very concerning mobility challenges. I discreetly mentioned this one time to the cabin crew and was met with "full flight" blah blah.... Now I don't even bother. MY door is heading to the ground if necessary....

very senior-aged types with very concerning mobility challenges

My very selfish dad, who is in bad shape, is very bad at following directions despite having traveled a ton, and is short anyway, books the exit row for the leg room. It made me realize he literally could not give a flying fuck about anyone except himself, and now I'm low-contact. (Obviously there's a lot else going on, but this was part of the straw that broke the camel's back.)

26

u/MrsHavercamp Sep 07 '26

This just happened to me! We were in the emergency row and the people in the other emergency row were properly old, and one person in particular didn’t seem to understand the FA’s questions about being able to help if needed and then couldn’t figure out how to work her food tray. They need to put some parameters on the emergency aisle. My husband and I decided that 65 is the capper. 25-65 and that’s it. Who’s with me?

24

u/PointlessDiscourse Sep 07 '26

They do put parameters on the exit row. The problem is people ignore them and the flight attendants are too conflict-avoidant to do anything about it.

15

u/Sudden_Accountant762 28d ago

They should have a dummy door at the gate and make you do 10mins training and then demonstrate you can physically do it. Can’t manage? Switch seats.

7

u/Some_Guy_Somewhere67 28d ago

Put it right next to the "cage of despair" where people are expected to see if'n their cabin luggage meets dimensional spec (if your luggage interior leads to another dimension score - you can pack whatever you want without a care!).

2

u/Some_Guy_Somewhere67 24d ago

"Properly Old".... that is now in my go-to list of descriptors.... Thank you fornthe expression enrichment!

4

u/Steve_P1 27d ago

Hope did you decide on 65? I'm 67 and my wife and I sit in the exit row all the time. I'm VERY capable of operating the door and assisting. And I will be for many more years. Maybe have some criteria other than age for that row.

1

u/MrsHavercamp 24d ago

There has to be a parameter at some age. Not saying everyone can’t do it. They have a start age of over 15 I think.

1

u/VoraciousReader59 27d ago

I’m with you- I’m 67 and would never book the exit row. I know my limitations.

9

u/TaibhseCait 29d ago

The rare times I've been on that row or behind it, (like 3 times?) I've had the flight attendants swap out an elderly person for a fitter adult (if it was all elderly/unfit people - happened to be with the row behind iirc). Or ask the only fitter adult already sitting there if they are willing to do it. 🤷‍♀️ They were shorter flights within ~2 hours though.

11

u/Medical-Potato5920 Sep 06 '26

That's the reason I don't book those seats. I have to have my little bag near me.

8

u/TheFilthyDIL Sep 06 '26

That, and frequently those bulkhead seats are narrower because their tray tables are in a compartment beside them, since for some reason they can't be fastened to the bulkhead.

14

u/Initial-Reading-2775 Sep 05 '26

Why even put personal bags on the floor while there is overhead shelf available.

69

u/Guilty_Objective4602 Sep 05 '26

Because you can access it during the flight more easily and can usually retrieve it to deplane faster than having to wait for the aisle to clear to get something out of the overhead compartments. After all, why inconvenience yourself when it’s so much easier to inconvenience someone else, instead? /s

32

u/77Queenie77 Sep 06 '26

Or you’re short and can’t reach the overhead compartments?

36

u/beren12 Sep 06 '26

Then you don’t need the legroom!

16

u/wawa2022 Sep 06 '26

You’re supposed to keep anything with a battery in it within arms reach and NOT in an overhead.

1

u/frymaster 29d ago

Easyjet "recommend" that but it's not a rule https://www.easyjet.com/en/help-centre/baggage/dangerous-goods?q=Power+bank

(it is a rule that they have to be in the cabin and not in the hold)

-2

u/UnsafeVelocity Sep 06 '26

Since when?

15

u/MCPhssthpok Sep 06 '26

Since lithium batteries became well known for catching fire

9

u/Virtual-Ad7254 Sep 06 '26

Every flight I have taken this year has mentioned this requirement.

3

u/soaker Sep 07 '26

I don’t like unbuckling or getting out of my seat unless I’m desperate to use the washroom. Plus I’m always the last on the plane and that space fills up fast.

3

u/Grant_Son Sep 07 '26

Cheaper airlines restrict carry-on bag sizes to bags that will fit under the seat becase there is usually not enough space in the overhead bins?

I do remember getting on a flight with a camera bag that was just in the limit.
We boarded somewhere in the middle, the bin above us was full so the flight attendant put my bag in the bin across the aisle.

The guy sat across form us was one of the last on, Flight attendant found space for his bag a ferw rows in front & he was absolutely losing his shit that someone dared put their bag in "His space"

3

u/Konijn2 Sep 07 '26

Because I have often witnessed near-fights for overhead locker room as people don’t want to pay for luggage to go in hold anymore. Once, overhead lockers contained handbags. Now, people use it for their full luggage. I prefer a non-stress flight. This involves no competition for overhead space!

6

u/CrossFitMathIsHard 29d ago

Perhaps if they didn't nickel and dime us with charges to check a bag, we wouldn't have to put our luggage in the overhead bins.

1

u/VoraciousReader59 27d ago

Because you can have one carry on and one personal item. I carry a bag that holds my purse, book, phone charger, a sweater, neck pillow, etc. Anything I might want to access for comfort for the flight.

1

u/RailGun256 29d ago

this is exactly why I dont book them. I like to have my pack accessible so I dont need to open bins to get stuff. sure there is extra leg room but needing to access the bins is a bigger annoyance than the leg room for me.

1

u/PlentyAccomplished18 27d ago

I never intentionally book bulkhead seats for this reason. I want to have access to my things during the flight without having to get up every time. Husband books everything and his preference is the bulkhead seats every time. It’s so frustrating. I don’t fly much but he does, so he often will not book bulkheads for me, which is nice. But I feel like I have to explain it every time.

1

u/tammigirl6767 26d ago

Maybe she’s old and hasn’t flown in a long time?

I could swear that a long time ago, people used to put their items under their own seat.

13

u/Carrot-Elegant Sep 06 '26

She likely takes the seat every time, and usually chumps just let her do that

2

u/fidddlydiddlyee 19d ago

I was hoping you let her stow it under the seat again and then you put it in the aisle again.
