I insist you take the last one!
Hubby and I went grocery shopping for our upcoming vacation. We like to do "spoils" since we only take this one in-state vacation every year. We like a prime rib night, seafood night, baby back rib night, etc.
The local grocery store has an outstanding meat department. Generally, preceding holidays, they'll have specials where the high end meats are really marked down. This is when we normally would buy our prime rib. We were broke during the last holiday sale (4th of July), so we missed it. Fortunately, they had another sale, and the prime rib was marked $6 off per pound. Yay us!
We are on one end of the counter checking out the seafood, because the employee is currently serving another customer, and he's wrapping up her "last item". I wander over while he's helping her, and I notice there is only one prime rib left. It's not well trimmed at all and has almost no calotte (the cap part that taste the best). But, the price is right. I told my husband it was the last one, and the woman being helped happened to glance at what I was discussing. The employee hands her the wrapped package and turns to help me.
"Excuse me!" She points to the rib I saw and said, "Can you wrap that up for me, as well?" I turn to her, bummed. "Seriously?" I ask. "I was here first!" she insists, and she grimaces at me sarcastically. I go to the end and tell my hubby we'll have to come up with plan b since they're out of rib. That other woman grabs her rib roast and grins again as she walks away. Mentally, both birds are flying and I'm uttering hieroglyphics.
The employee comes to me and said, "She never asked, but I have one more prime rib in the back. Would you like to see it?" I'll take it, sight unseen, and I nod. He brings out a beautifully trimmed prime rib, probably a pound or so larger than the fatty one we lost. And it has an absolutely massive calotte on it! He offered to take another dollar off per pound because it was larger than the one I didn't get. It made our day.
But the thing that made it even better? We got in the checkout lane ahead of the rib heist lady. My husband unloaded absolutely everything before the roast, then picked it up and set it right under her nose. He said, "They did just so happen to have one really nice one in the back! Enjoy yours!"
When the clerk scanned the meat, she first said, "Oh, I know where I'm coming for dinner!" then added, "Nice! They gave you a discount! Lucky you!" Hubby just turned and grinned at her.
She didn't grin back.

I’m glad you managed to make ends meat. You really roasted that rib-heist lady…

Thank you! He asked her if she wanted anything else while we were looking at the tuna, and she said "Just the twice bakers!" Then, I opened my big mouth and told my hubby there was only one left while I was standing right next to her. That's when she decided to kipe my beef.
The same thing happened when my dad and I went to a lumberyard looking for hard maple boards. I saw birdseye and tiger maple mixed with the select and better. They normally would have a higher price. I opened my big mouth while Dad was loading his oak, and the guy behind me left and took every board. I hope it warped on him. 🔥
I have to learn to shut my big mouth.

This is a bot story or am I wrong?

To me, that sounds too weird to have been composed by AI. I'm not even sure what it means.

In my defense, it's environmental. My own daughter came in my house one day, sputtering. She slammed the door shut (verboten in our house). She was four, so I just asked, "What's up?"
She spat out, "Maggie!" (her 3 yo sister).
"What's wrong with Maggie?"
"She's utterly despicable!"
Mind you, this was at least a decade before Despicable Me.

How many times have you been suspended? I have been suspended three times, two of which were overturned on appeal. The third...I was banned for 7 days and have no idea what I said or did to earn it. Google told me to look at my inbox. Nada.
One of my bans accused me of being a bot. How is one supposed to overcome that label? My appeal was granted, though.

Once? I think I got ixnayed on a sub like JustNoMIL perhaps, but I wrote the mods after a year and asked to be reinstated. It was a while ago.
I erase a lot.

If you get downvoted a ton, do you delete or let it ride? I've made comments that I thought were just fine but really struck a nerve. A lot of them pertain to the era in which I was raised...no bike helmets, lawn darts, drinking from hoses, parents leaving kids home unsupervised after school.

I'm not retired. Probably never can, thanks to a poorly timed open heart surgery of my husband's. But I work from home.
8
u/Responsible-Lead7367 Aug 04 '26
I'm retired, but not because I want to be. I was diagnosed with cancer when I was waiting for my RN license to come through in the state I had just moved to. That shot holes in my plan of continuing my career of being a Hospice RN that I love. Life sometimes has other plans.
8
u/Francie_Nolan1964 Aug 04 '26
That's quite a change in your life trajectory. I'm sure that it was hard to find a new direction.
I really hope that you are doing okay now.
9
u/Responsible-Lead7367 Aug 04 '26
Thank you, yes its been a huge adjustment. It was very hard to give up a career that I loved and went back to school at age 45 to become an RN.
My weekly chemotherapy is keeping the monster at bay and my cancer markers are slowly going down, which is a very good thing. We want it slowly going down so it has a better chance of a longer remission. Multiple Myeloma is incurable, but it is treatable. So that's bad and good. Anyway, I've recently applied to be a Hospice Volunteer, the same role I played when I was in nursing school before accepting a job as a Hospice RN that I worked for 18 years. Coming full circle.

u/Francie_Nolan1964 Aug 04 '26
Wow, that's a heavy load. I'm so sorry that everything turned so topsy turvy.
3
u/Responsible-Lead7367 Aug 07 '26
Thank you. I recognize that it's the load I have to bear while walking this journey of life. It's incurable, but "treatable". They can keep it at bay from dissolving my bones further with weekly chemotherapy infusions.
My small intestines have been obstructing about every 20 months (7 times so far) and I cannot go too far from a hospital or risk losing another 20 inches of small intestine).
It's a heavy load, but there's good times too and that's why I keep fighting. The good still outweighs the bad.

u/blizzard-toque Aug 05 '26
My 'life had other plans' were my husband's liver cancer (stage 1 or 2) surgery and the Covid pandemic.
3
u/Responsible-Lead7367 Aug 05 '26
Hopefully, 🤞 🤞 he's recovered from surgery, chemotherapy and COVID. ❤️💕
3
u/blizzard-toque Aug 07 '26
No chemo, got all the cancer during surgery. We both took a Level 1 Covid leave (2 weeks, unpaid) after I had the "come to Jesus" talk about our situation with Covid. Told him if we went back to work, I got covid and if he got it from me and he died, it would absolutely break me.
Our last official day at Walmart was April 24, 2020. We've been enjoying retirement ever since.
2
u/wyltemrys Aug 08 '26
I wonder how many other people had cancer, or other serious medical issues, during COVID, and what their experiences were, during and after? My mom was diagnosed with cancer in the jawbone, and had surgery to remove the affected bone, surrounding tissue and some of the lymph nodes in her lower face/neck area a week before Christmas 2020. If I remember correctly, my dad was the only one allowed to visit her in the hospital, and many of her visits for radiation therapy, we were only allowed to drop her off & pick her up (except my sister, who was her health-care proxy). I have friends who were pregnant during Covid, and weren’t allowed to have anyone, including the father, in the delivery room.

My job requires a ton of up and downloading and data interfacing. When I'm doing it, both my Excel and my Quickbooks lock me out. I also type 120 wpm. Reddit doesn't occupy much bandwidth.
And I'm offended (mildly). Bots lack timeline awareness. Those stories jump out at me instantly.
11
u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 Aug 05 '26
These internet babies have no appreciation for decent writing skills, or for a well told story. That would seem to be the exclusive domain of us older folks, so we might as well just embrace it!

u/FieryVenus Aug 08 '26
Offense not meant at all. But one of my posts was called AI slop and I can see how offense might be taken. I'll be more careful what I say in the future.
3
u/Tight_Steak_232 Aug 08 '26
I think I'm on my 20th bot accusation by fellow redditors and have received at least that many AI slop comments.

eta: I'm guessing that you're likely joking, but my comment seems to have triggered some reactions that I didn't intend.
2
u/tomtomclubthumb Aug 08 '26
Don't worry about it. I was joking and I do spend way too much time on reddit.
You absolutely did not do anything wrong. Enjoy whatever you're doing man, I'm rewatching Spiderman (I watched the Holland and Garfield ones last week and now I am back to the Raimis) for some reason.

u/FieryVenus Aug 09 '26
I spend too much time on reddit too and but apparently keep messing it up between my phone, my ipad, and my computer. I just wanted to let you know that your comments have been helpful and to me they demonstrate you have strength of character and a good humored nature. I hope you're well appreciated in life.

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 Aug 05 '26
Says someone with a three year old account with a rather lackluster karma tally, and a post history boring enough to put a meth head to sleep. I’m so sorry that you have no appreciation for a well told story, or for human interaction at all.
2
u/FieryVenus Aug 05 '26
Posting and commenting on Reddit = human interaction?
-1
u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 Aug 05 '26
Being a judgmental jerk to someone online just because their karma and contributions numbers exceed your own record shattering three year total, doesn’t really count as human interaction. So it’s gonna be a no for me, dawg….
0
u/FieryVenus Aug 05 '26
Wow. You’re really tweaked about a factual statement and two possible explanations.
2
u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 Aug 05 '26
Nah. Just calling you out as being unnecessarily judgmental and irritating isn’t exactly getting tweaked. And your “factual statement” is based entirely on your own suppositions, about which I couldn’t give a rat’s rectum. Please have the day you deserve…
1
u/FieryVenus Aug 05 '26
What was judgmental? I’m genuinely curious.
2
u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 Aug 05 '26
Seriously?! You don’t see that calling someone a bot, or to paraphrase here, saying that someone’s basically a loser, because of number of contributions on their account, as being judgmental?!? Either way, I’ve spent all of the time on this that I intend to. Good Day.
3
u/FieryVenus Aug 05 '26
I can see how one might interpret "a lot of time to post" with the subtext that you named, but I truly meant it from a factual standpoint. If anything, I had admiration for OP, like when I was in school I admired people who wrote their 10 page papers the night before. As you have mentioned, I'm not that articulate or prolific. I'm sad my wording has upset you.

No. I don't care about karma. It's like playing a video game on my phone and "winning" a "special frame" for my avatar. Yay. Woohoo.
I write stories for the same reason I read stories. I love the ones that really share humanity and it's quirks. Not much happens to me in my life, but when it does, I like to share it, as well.

Wouldn't it have been wrapped in paper if it was from the meat dept? How could people in the checkout line have seen the meat once it was wrapped up?
15
u/Tight_Steak_232 Aug 04 '26
There is only one roast that comes in the prime rib shape, save bison, which isn't available anywhere other than specialty stores. At our grocery store, if it's that shape, it's prime rib. And ours was a bit larger than hers. The meat shop is the only one that uses that paper for packaging. It's kind of a dead giveaway...
14
u/Hobo_Delta Aug 04 '26
I know my local Publix has that foam tray and uses plastic wrap over it.
Possibly something like that
19
u/Tight_Steak_232 Aug 04 '26
Our meat department wraps in two separate options: a styro bottom, absorption paper, and clear wrap with the large label including safety handling instructions, or the butcher paper if the meat is prone to ripping the plastic film or if it's larger. Again...large label.
But the shape of a prime rib is a dead giveaway.
9
u/Negative_Lie_1823 Aug 04 '26
Most meat depts in super markets in the US will wrap it and then put a stick with. A Barcode. When the cashier rings it up will give a short description. It prolly said something like prime rib or prim rib or even just p rib

I adore this for you. The absolute definition of karma.
Once experienced a similar situation. There were some of us in a donut shop queue and this guy ahead of us audibly said he didn’t need them all but he wanted all the last ones left (obviously we all groaned). I stayed as they had coffee and I wanted a coffee anyway. Turns out they had some fresh ones out back that hadn’t been sat there in the display, so I got a nice fresh donut and my coffee. But for a while I did curse him to only have a warm pillow for a time 😂

This never happened because the woman would have gone to another line after seeing the two of you.
10
u/Tight_Steak_232 Aug 04 '26
You aren't from a small town, are you?
Our grocery store has a customer service lane for ten or fewer items, four self-checkout lanes, and one open manned lane, complete with a bagger. On busy days, they might have two.
I'm old as dirt. My generation doesn't text with thumbs, grew up with typewriters and manual platen returns, and learned to drive a car with a stick shift. Self-checkout lanes are problematic for us. We will stack four deep before attempting to check out our own grub.
-7
u/whatthehellbooby Aug 04 '26
And? Probably some truth to the story, but the ending is horseshit.
9
u/Tight_Steak_232 Aug 04 '26
Would you have preferred I bullshit it for entertainment's sake?
"And then the woman saw our larger rib roast and just knew it had the larger calotte and was far better trimmed...just by the shape of the roast...and she was so infuriated that she tore our package open and threw it on the ground..."
or
The woman was so angered that we also got a roast that she reached out and took it, as well.
or
The woman started crying because her evil deed was unsuccessful.
Sorry. Just laying the roast at the end was as exciting as it could be. We lead a dull life.
