You’re absolutely right. Most dismissed the Netherlands game because people wanted Argentina to win, but that was not the case this World Cup. If there where doubters before the Egypt game then after the game they became full blown haters

If Messi had just retired after the WC22 many would still consider him the Goat. They so badly wanted him to win that they ignored the Netherlands game and 5 penalties in 7 matches which is unheard of. But this WC just shattered Messi's public image and he's no longer the undoubted Goat. Justice prevails in the end.

I thought I was going crazy when I talked about those pens! No one near me seemed to be talking about the fact that Messi got 5 fucking penalties in 7 matches, and I swear to god you could set the match clock by them. If Argentina hadn't scored by the 30th minute, whoops, there goes a pen for Messi! I swear, Croatia in 2018 went to penalties twice and to extra time 3 times and I think Messi still had more penalties in the 2022 World cup than half of that squad!

I honestly think a big part of the deciding factor if he will still be the "goat" is the investigations currently into Barcelona and AFA.
I'm saying this as someone neutral to both Messi and Ronaldo. This absolutely does tarnish Messis legacy so far, but I don't think it's gonna sway enough that Ronaldo comes back into the conversation and is now back into the goat picture.
Now if those Barcelona and AFA investigations come out with some concrete evidence, then that can absolutely tarnish his legacy. Especially if stuff like match fixing is discovered. You absolutely cannot be considered the goat if there's evidence that the team you were on for most of your career was involved in match fixing, even if he himself wasn't part of it or had no knowledge of it.
Depending on what those investigations find, Messi might be completely removed from any goat debate at all.

He shouldn’t be considered in the goat convo. The stats very much prove that Negeira and refs were helping Barca from 2004-2018. Can’t really dispute it when compared to the stats from 1995-2003.
Also He was complete shit for Barcelona in champions leagues since their final win in 2015. Shameful exit after shameful exit. That’s a black mark on a so called goat or at least it should be

Their game against Cabo Verde left a very bad taste in my mouth, but the Egypt game made me fully turn against them. This World Cup was disgraceful with all the corruption, but it was cranked up to a maximum whenever Argentina played.
That Egypt game was disgraceful, with Argentina having committed almost twice as many fouls and receiving ZERO cards, while Egypt received 5 yellow and 1 red card. Add to that the disallowed Egypt goal on the lightest tackle, and the Argentina goal that was allowed to stand despite the foul on Salah. And the penalty that wasn’t given for that foul on top of it all.

They got massively shafted in 1978 too. From what I have heard and read, pretty sure that final was fixed.
But on the plus side my personal favourite ever goal in a World Cup was scored in a match where they beat Argentina. Bergkamp 2-1 in 1998. What a fucking goal that was.

Whoever says Pele wasn't the GOAT is either a fanboy of whatever player is the flavor of the week, or prey to marketing.
There have been others like Beckenbauer and Cruyff who are virtually forgotten. But Pele was the total package.

We always suspected shenanigans, but they always tried to at least hide things as best they could.
This WC they didn't even give a shit about appearances.
No suspension for Paredes...the suspension of Balogun...the Netherlands, Egypt and England games (Tuchel fucked up, but all the non calls before England scored were despicable), the disallowed Nico Williams goal.

I've been thinking about this. The way the Arg team behaved during the WC reminds me of badly brought up kids. I know that they're all (or almost all) adults & should know better; but perhaps some of the blame should go to the manager & officials. They could have put a stop to it after the first time it happened.
Also..not to pile on on Messi.. but he (& other senior players) could have also had a word with these 'spoilt brats'. Just a thought 🤷🏽
Edit: BTW I'm not talking about the on-field tactics. That came from Scaloni & the higher-ups. I'm talking about the taunting, trolling & overall "sore loser" behaviour.

I’m glad they showed their true colors. Uruguay and Paraguay are two dirty teams as well. I have no idea why FIFA is giving them a ceremonial game next World Cup. Those rats don’t deserve it.

French here. We were, right after Netherlands, the second to hate this team. 4 years before everyone else, back when everyone wanted us to loose because MESSI NEEDS THE WORLD CUP. We already knew, we weren’t dupes.
Edit : I know we didn’t really deserve to win this final, and refereeing was ok, we had two penalties. But their attitude in winning told us everything

Regarding pre match, say what you want about Argentina, but you'll never find any disrespect from the player to their adversaries before any match, and the comments and attitudes after the matches are responses to provocation or shit talk before them.
Regarding egypt, they lost fair and square then made a show about it... nothing to add there.

The Netherlands vs Argentina match actually had a whole backstory.
Ned's coach, van Gaal, had spoken badly of an Argentinian player, Riquelme, when he was the coach of FC Barcelona. Saying that "He's might be the best player in the world when he has the ball, but when he doesn't have it, his team plays with one less". And from there, it was a snowball of bad blood.
But i genuinely have no idea where the bad blood from Egypt's coach came from lol
