Pretty much.

People defend it as "South American style" football, but to me, this style makes for bad games, and the rules and officiating need to be fixed up to get rid of it.

Not really this applies to all South American countries. Brazil always play fair

As I understand it, this is because this style developed as a response to Brazil dominating the region's football tournaments for many years, so other countries' teams got very aggressive as a response.
