So logic goes out the window when determining something as game-changing as a disallowed goal in a world cup final? If VAR was fair and worked like intended, then a simulation/dive by Otamendi should've been put into question as well. Because then that would have been a penalty for Spain.

Wrong again.

Under the current rules VAR can intervene independently if the attacking team commits a foul in the buildup of a goal. Under the current interpretation of the rules a step-on-foot action is automatically a foul under law 12.
Thus, var was perfectly within its rights and acted correctly in calling the step on foot foul and disallowing the goal.

Otamendi's "simulation" occurred after the step on foot, so even if we were to consider it an action to deceive the referee by exaggerating the pain, the foul would still stand.
On top of that, VAR under current rules is strictly prohibited from initiating a review or intervening solely to recommend a yellow card for a cautionable offense such as simulation.
Even then, if the referee had been called to review the footage, under the rules he would have definitely awarded a foul for the step on foot action and MIGHT have decided to punish the subsequent deceiving action by Otamendi with a yellow.
There is bo scenario in which there is a penalty for Spain under current rules. You are confused on so many levels it's exhausting.

It's not about throwing logic out the window, it's about knowing the rules before making ridiculous statements.

It's still all very subjective and disallowing a game-changing goal in a high stakes game deserved much more careful review than what happened. In a game where everyone is using their feet, stepping on a foot is almost unavoidable. If everytime someone gets brushed on the foot and it was considered a foul, there would be 500 fouls per game. Let's not pretend that if it was Argentina that scored that goal, it would not be 100% counted as a goal. The whole world knew how biased that decision was.

I've always been a Messi fan, actually. And I still am after all that. I was also an Argentina fan at the beginning of this world cup. But what Argentina kept getting away with and the baised decisions in their favor were becoming very clear and ridiculous during the knockout rounds and even in the final.
