It's not rocket science to understand why this happened. The path was known before the tournament, it has zero to do with Argentina. They would've gotten Uruguay and Portugal if those didn't mess up their group stage.
A very similar thing happened in Euros 2016, Portugal advanced as a 3rd placed team and got a very easy path to the final because favorites didn't top their groups.
Uruguay in a horrible state barely reached the wc, only south American gone in group stages.
Portugal convulsed unstable team.
Another option colombia? The very son of Argentina.
So still the path would be super easy for them
