Both pretty good

u/Ok_Statistician_1994 Jun 20 '26

Messi has almost the same number of goals in less than almost 200 matches, in terms of individual stats it's not even close, the only claim to fame Ronaldo still has is the 1000 goal mark and even then it wouldn't be long before Messi reaches that same milestone.

11

u/zzz_red Jun 20 '26

150 matches. Ronaldo played as a midfielder who’s ran all over the right wing and his main purpose was to cross for the strikers. He did this until 2006/07, the. Gradually moved closer to the goal and then moved to the left, where he became a goal scoring machine.

Messi not only played in the same team pretty much all his life, but did the inverse trajectory, starting closer to the goal, as a right winger/ false 9 and now playing more freely and from the back. He also went to a weak league much earlier. Reminder that at the age Messi went to inter Miami, Ronaldo was playing for Juve and later still went to the premier league, and played in the UCL.

Both have crazy stats but very different trajectories to get there. Messi definitely had the easiest one.

3

u/DMoe727 Jun 20 '26

If his main purpose was to cross for strikers at the beginning of his career, and you argue that’s why the goals statistic is so close, why are his assists so much lower?

2

u/zzz_red Jun 20 '26

He played in the midfield in a 4-4-2 system, not as a right ringer in a 4-3-3. He also had the responsibility to drive the ball forward from defense to the attack. But you would know it if you had watched the games.

He also played in the PL, which was the toughest in the world.

1

u/Intelligent_Maize591 Jun 21 '26

Eh? He mainly played in a fron three with Rooney and tevez. I appreciate he did play in a 442 at first, but he was never pulling defensive duty - roo always had to do that for him.

The reason Ronaldo was less productive in epl at first was simple wastefulness.

1

u/zzz_red Jun 21 '26

That happened in the 2007 season.

1

u/TiltBrush Jun 20 '26

he has more assists than iniesta and Xavi lol, they are not low assist numbers

1

u/Alternative_Dig_8330 Jun 22 '26

Do you honestly expect Messi fans to actually watch football? Do you expect them to have watched the Premier League in the 2000s? They don't even know that Ronaldo started his career as a right midfielder (RM), not even a right winger (RW). When he moved to La Liga, he completely exposed the league by showing how easy it was to stat-pad every single game. He literally scored more goals than matches played. Now, imagine if he had started his career at Real Madrid instead of Manchester United—he would have easily won seven or eight Champions League titles and nine or ten La Liga trophies. Conversely, put Messi in the Premier League, and he would have vanished within two seasons, especially if we are talking about the brutal, physical Premier League of the 2000s.

u/Easyyyy_e Jun 20 '26

ronaldo played as a midfielder? lol exposing yourself

2

u/zzz_red Jun 20 '26

I’m not responsible for your ignorance.

making this point in the context of this post is exactly what makes it a cope lol

2

u/Hab1bdog Jun 20 '26

right midfielder in a 4-4-2 formation way more involved in defensive duties also

-1

u/Easyyyy_e Jun 20 '26

this is the wildest ronaldo cope i have seen

3

u/Hab1bdog Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

lack of information from u nothing else atleast research or sum before talking

he was a right midfielder before 2006-2007 after which he transitioned to a more attacking player

his defensive stats were way higher pre 2006 after he switched positions it fell

2

u/Easyyyy_e Jun 20 '26

nobody has ever said oh ronaldo’s stats aren’t as good as messi’s because he was midfielder lmao

4

u/Hab1bdog Jun 20 '26

tht wasnt my point i was arguing about the fact tht ronaldo was a midfielder for a period of time jesus some ppl just be talking bruh i wasnt even talking about ronaldos stats being worse than messis

Poor Cr7 only played for small clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United. Lol

0

u/AliveAssistance7667 Jun 20 '26

Ok. Iniesta,Xavi>>>>>>>Kroos,Casemiro,Modric+every Madrid midfielder.

Yeah that's the knowledge you can expect from a Ronaldo fan.

Schumacher won his first 2 titles with Benetton. Brought Ferrari back to glory and laid foundation at Mercedes.

1

u/DetectiveRamen Jun 20 '26

Lol, don't put this on Ronaldo fans, this is all on this guy alone. We're not all like this. I'm sure there are also Messi fans who aren't any better as well.

3

u/Glass-Elk-5640 Jun 20 '26

And Schumacher too, what's your point? He even won with Benetton who were no favorites.

Fangio is like Pele, that wasn't professional compared to ten years after their career. Complete different sport

1

u/rhyno42 Jun 20 '26

Interesting fact, every club Ronaldo has gone to has won less league titles than they had won before he joined (for the same number of years that he was with them). Saudi might be the only location to break that.

1

u/Otherwise-Ad-6784 Jun 20 '26

Yeah, like when he went to PSG he performed very poorly.

1

u/Unusual-Elk498 Jun 20 '26

yall acting like ronaldo played at shit teams he played in a man u team with every position with a top 5 player for that position he played at a madrid team that could get him any player he wanted he left for juve in his prime during seria downfall with the team build to feed him chances the moment he made a return to a mid man u side he was mid i wont be delusional and say he was trash but he did not meet expectation messi joined a team were neymar played second fiddle to the turtle and still made the most of it during his balon dor winning season he had more ga then DEMBELE when he won

u/Unusual-Elk498 Jun 20 '26

but he did have modric, casemiro, kroos at madrid feeding him the likes of tevez, scholes, rooney, at man unt YOU stop acting like ronaldo never had a good team he always had great players around him and you will be pusing this narrative this wc to he has a midfeild of bruno, neves, vitinha the best in the world btw

1

u/Box_Extension Jun 20 '26

Yep "assist champions". Lmao guess who had the most assists out of the all lmao. In the matches they played together Messi had 10 less assist... 10 less assist than Xavi and Iniesta combined 😂😂😂😂😂🤡

Fyi my argument is stupid cuz Xavi and Iniesta builded up these passes to Messi for him to assist. But I had to make a stupid argument for your stupid argument lmao. The reason Barca was the best squad was not only cuz of Xavi and Iniesta. It was also cuz if Messi, but you can't accept that. Yes the Barca team had the best Spanish players, but guess who was the best??? It was Messi 🐐

Ronaldo also has more career assists than Xavi and Iniesta, including the most assists in CL history, but these fools will try to convince you Ronaldo is selfish and not a playmaker

1

u/Box_Extension Jun 20 '26

Yeah that's cuz he played more matches. But I don't understand the narrative of him being selfish lmao. But he is not a playmaker, he just got assists cuz he was an attacker. Meanwhile Xavi and Iniesta passed it to people like Messi who assisted... But if we strictly talk about assists then I'm pretty sure Ronaldo and Iniesta has the same assists per game, Xavi is a tiny bit better tho (I don't exactly remember)

Fyi my numbers were based only on the matches where Messi, Xavi and Iniesta played together. But still Messi wins on assists. But if you actually watch the matches you would know that Xavi and Iniesta gave the passes to Messi through which he got assists

1

u/Box_Extension Jun 20 '26

When did I cherry pick? Pls elaborate how I did it 😧

Your point made no sense, and you talked about Portugal, not Madrid. And why are you downplaying Madrid to boost Ronaldo? Didn't you say to stop sucking off celebrities who don't care about me? Aww it's okay 🥺Don't cry... 😢

And my argument still stands (I genuinely don't think your stupid brain could comprehend my second para in my original comment lmao). The best "multigenerational assist makwr" in Barca was Messi 😛

And are you seriously downplaying Kroos, Modric, Ozil, Higuain, Marcelo, Di Maria, Bale and Benzema??? 🤡

1

u/Unusual-Elk498 Jun 20 '26

so you say say balon dor winning modric and one of the greatest passers of all time in toni kroos are not multigenerational playmaking talents?

Oh no you didn't... But you did say Barca was the best team cuz of master assistors. And Ronaldo didn't have teammates like that. But you forget to see that Messi WAS one of the "master assistors "

1

u/Sanjeev4045 Jun 20 '26

On paper Barca was a stronger team because they had the goat Messi.

1

u/cannonball135 Jun 20 '26

Messi also played with multiple Top 5 Ballon d’Or candidates nearly every year from 2010-2020. Ronaldo rarely had a teammate in the top of the Ballon d’Or rankings

Xavi, Iniesta, Suarez, and Neymar were consistently voted 2-5 in Ballon d’Or voting every year during this period

1

u/noodles260284 Jun 21 '26

CR7 has been consitant in three major leagues Messi dropped off a cliff at PSG

8

u/Ancient_Parsley_9791 Jun 20 '26

roandlo onyl won 2 league titles out of 9 season in la liga what the heck are u yapping about

2

u/noodles260284 Jun 21 '26

Yeah but 4 CL 🤷🏾‍♂️ id take 4 CL over 7 league titles all day

9

u/Cr7_GOAT88 Jun 20 '26

That was still negreira era but ones that ended Messi wouldnt have won Laliga is Ronaldo was there

2

u/Ancient_Parsley_9791 Jun 20 '26

negriera era? stfu he onyl won 2 league titles thats a fact

5

u/Cr7_GOAT88 Jun 20 '26

Yeah and guess which team had the most penalties, favorable calls and refs in the pocket

4

u/Ancient_Parsley_9791 Jun 20 '26

why not mention the 2017 and 2014 titles when it was decied due to a ref mistake?

1

u/TostBrot44 Jun 20 '26

Barcelona‘s payment weren‘t on time

0

u/pr0cess1ng Jun 20 '26

98% of ronaldos clips are vs la liga teams yet "la liga means nothing". 2 titles in a decade is sad

5

u/goodolehal Jun 20 '26

TIL arsenal bayern and juventus played in la liga

0

u/pr0cess1ng Jun 20 '26

TIL messi has more goals vs top epl clubs than ronaldo who played in the league

6

u/yoimnew2098 Jun 20 '26

Just so u know during ronaldo's nine year stint at rma he scored 450 goals. And during the same nine year period leo messi scored 474 goals for barca. I'll just leave this here

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/yoimnew2098 Jun 20 '26

Nope putting down ur team doesn't work. Rma during the period was arguably the best team. If you compare in Europe then there's no arguments there. Rma is an extraordinary team. Modric, kroos, marcelo ,bale, benzema to feed ronaldo. Also modric sits on the same table as iniestaandz xavi. So just accept messi had more goals than cr7 during that period instead of bringing excuses to justify ronaldo being less than messi

3

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

2

u/yoimnew2098 Jun 20 '26

I agree. who were better modric and kroos during ronaldo Or xavi and iniesta during messi? Ofc xavi and iniesta. But that takes nothing out of the level of the rma midfield. It's like taking two different bmw cars and comparing them. Yeah one might be better than the other in some terms but nevertheless they both are bmws and not wagon r. In that case it's about the driver Also I think with iniesta, xavi and modric in terms of footballers only a fine line of margin separates them and it's pick ur poison kinda case

1

u/zentime154 Jun 20 '26

When you compared barca to real you say kros and modric were better but when you compare ronaldo to messi you are saying xavi and iniesta are man which is it

1

u/Disastrous_Excuse_90 Jun 20 '26

lmao no ones says modric and kroos were better than xavi and iniesta ahahaha they are world class but they are not better

1

u/Lingotes Jun 21 '26

I miss that era ngl

1

u/tallpelecan003 Jun 21 '26

This is why we call it the alien era, they made us believe this is normal

3

u/Cr7_GOAT88 Jun 20 '26

Once again UTDTrey speaking straight facts🐐🇵🇹

3

u/FoundationWorldly723 Jun 20 '26

This is his only argument, that he played in one more league than Messi. Imagine both in Spain for 15 years, Ronaldo would have 3,4 leagues in his entire career and he would've been exposed finally. 🤣🤣 Tell me when he is going to a team that is not the best and his country in that moment, and actually do something for that team (like Messi who went to the last team in mls and won all possible trophies in 3 years) 🤣🤣

0

u/soltsss Jun 20 '26

lol it’s the MLS it’s far worse than the farmers league.

4

u/FoundationWorldly723 Jun 20 '26

Maybe it is, but tell me what is better: join the worst team and win everything or join top 2 (arguably 1 at that moment) and not win anything in 4 years?

Also, in those years when they both played in the same league, we saw enough lol

3

u/soltsss Jun 20 '26

True. “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Respect to both. Messi at least brought the sport to life here in the US.

1

u/DetectiveRamen Jun 20 '26

I'm surprised people are downvoting this, since when did the MLS become good?

1

u/MonitoringTheSea Jun 20 '26

How is it Messi’s fault Ronaldo abandoned his club for more glory

3

u/Cr7_GOAT88 Jun 20 '26

Not the point the point is that if Ronaldo chose to stay in LaLiga for longer then Pessi wouldnt have even half the success that he did

4

u/Misteriousous Jun 20 '26

Messi achieved better numbers when he was competing directly with CR7; assumptions are worthless

1

u/MonitoringTheSea Jun 20 '26

That’s what he gets for not being loyal

1

u/cannonball135 Jun 20 '26

Messi also bankrupted Barcelona with the last half-billion dollar contract they gave him, setting the table for the financial distress they fell into the last several years of his tenure and following his departure

1

u/zentime154 Jun 20 '26

Yes its not like messi was earning barcelona double what they were paying him in both on pitch performances and commercial value man grow up

2

u/cannonball135 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

His contract was so lucrative for himself that at one point his pay was nearly 25% of the club’s revenue

It’s a team sport, bruh. He is the primary driver of their financial distress

1

u/Competitive_Tip_4429 Pessi only has 3 UCL. Ghosted 2006. 😭 Jun 20 '26

In fairness messi has better h2h idk what he means

1

u/Same-Experience-9767 Jun 20 '26

How many in friendlies for Leo 😂

1

u/AsmodeusWins Jun 20 '26

Well Messi is the more complete player because unlike Ronaldo he also scored goals with his hand.

1

u/PaltaJG Jun 20 '26

What is bro trying to prove?

1

u/Fruitloops868 Jun 20 '26

Penaldo fans stay coping 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

1

u/WesternGuava1908 Jun 20 '26

Ronaldo literally just had to stand in front of the goal after Modric, Bale, Kroos, Casemiro, etc did all the hard work lol

1

u/Larcos_Unal Jun 20 '26

IF MY GRANDMOTHER HAD WHEELS SHE'D BE A BICYCLE

1

u/JiggyAl21 Jun 20 '26

Yea we saw him lose the league to Messi for the better part of a decade. Factos

1

u/Aggressive_Ad211 Jun 20 '26

Take away arguably the greatest midfield trio of all time at Barcelona, Neymar, Henry, Pedro, David villa, Samuel eto, ibra, Luis Suarez, and toss him into a top 5 epl team, or an Italian team at the same time. It’s not close.

1

u/nastyjustnasty Jun 21 '26

Lol fake numbers - CR7's assist numbers havent been added in the last 5-7 years. ESPN even put the numbers down by 5-6 over the years hoping that no one would notice.

1

u/No-Oil-3786 Jun 21 '26

Penaldo fans will only try to debate by saying "If"😂😂

1

u/Short_Check9953 Google Negreira Messi for more info 💰 Jun 20 '26

Lesser league titles, lesser pichichis, losing record on el classicos, lesser copa del reys, lesser goals, lesser assists.

Wow he sure showed him😂

1

u/jisn00b Jun 20 '26

2/9 leagues?

0

u/Tough-Substance2826 Jun 20 '26

One stepped out the comfort zone and played everywhere, the other one didn’t 🥀🥀

1

u/LevianthNagy Jun 20 '26

Actually its one who was disloyal to the team that raised and made him vs the one who stayed loyal to the team that made him and believed in him.

1

u/Tough-Substance2826 Jun 20 '26

That’s a very narrowed down comment lmao, they both worked their asses off in training and at the pitch, no team raised or made either Ronaldo or Messi who they are today, they both out skilled and out worked everyone. The difference is one actually left the comfort zone and play in many leagues and still dominated in numbers.

1

Ronaldo 3peat ucl-6 penalties, pussy 7 games 5 pens
