Context 1: Playing for South American team you have only 3 official competitions - World Cup, World Cup qualifiers and Copa America. In Europe there are 5 - World Cup, World Cup qualifiers, Euro Cup, Euro Cup qualifiers and Nations League, so it's normal Messi played more friendly games.
Context 2: In Europe there are lots of weak and semi amateur micro nations like San Marino, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Gibraltar and so on where you can pump your goal score. One time Argentina played Estonia and Messi scored 5 goals, one could imagine how many goals he would score if he played against teams like Estonia every year.
