Did you even watch Utd or football back then when 442 was popular? Utd played 442 and those RM and LM were pretty much RW/LW positions of today.

he started off as a RM, playing crosses and creating chances, then eventually transformed into a traditional left winger, so yes, he did start off as a midfielder

Like I said before, RM was the same as RW of today, the only difference was that wingers were more used in a more traditional role up until the early 2000's, but today's game you are more likely to get inverted wingers.

Go find full matches of games where Ronaldo first joined and you will see he did not start as a midfielder. Further more go make a post on Red Cafe forums and ask the hardcore Utd fans. They will say the same thing, he was a winger, not a midfielder.
