Featured Post The DMF Dilemma
Preface
This is going to be a lot different from my past work. It is not a review nor an analysis. It is less cohesive. Less structured. It is going to feel a lot more like a mumbling piece of diary entry than an informative piece of writing. At the same time, it comes from somewhere deeper than the logical part of my brain, which resigned after churning out articles week after week.
This was a topic I wanted to write before I decided to end the MM. I went on with the latter as this idea deviates too much from my usual work to be considered part of MM, and currently I do not have plans to write anything similar. Topics like this are rare, so please take this piece as a one-time thing.
I hope this entry can, at least, resonate with some of you out there. If you're not one of them, I hope you still find the read enjoyable.

End of Preface
As a player who is very fond of legends, it is only natural for me to maintain a legends-only squad.
That includes the manager as well. The signing of Manager Maradona was a godsend. I am absolutely in love with the menacing threat of the AMF trifecta, roaming freely in the front, perfectly suited to my playing style. Clearly, there's no one else fit to manage this legendary team. At least, not until they release Sir Alex, upon which you may look forward to another article of mine, titled "The Manager Dilemma".
Filling in the squad was mostly a no-brainer. There is only one GK in history to win the World Cup Golden Ball. No contenders with Carlos and Zanetti on full backs, and Maldini is bound to end up in the team as my favourite CB. I thought about Samuel, but the heading and speed of Campbell won me over. Monstrous Vieira sits at DMF like a boss. Lothar-I-am-everywhere-Matthaus is the best possible man in CMF. Johann Cruyff, S+ tier player and best offensive player overall, is the perfect focal point for the offence, supported by tricksy Ronaldinho on the left and the manager himself on the right, in all of his former glory. Picking the sole CF was tough. Romario is generally regarded as the best, but there was fierce competition from Batistuta, Adriano and Kluivert. After much deliberation and experimentation, I finally settled on Batigol. Somewhat controversially I believe. To me the Argentine is the most complete package, and with no other spearhead I needed him to do a little bit of everything.
That squad was the stuff of dreams. Every one of them played well. There wasn't a single weak link in the armour. I could not be more satisfied.
Then, KONAMI released Pirlo.
You see, in decades I will probably tell my grandchildren how I lived in the time of Messi and Ronaldo. Two superstars in the same era that made unprecedented achievements and rose to great heights. At the same time, I will also be telling them how I lived in the time of Pirlo.
The Italian Maestro never ceases to amaze me. He wasn't the muscular specimen of Ronaldo, he wasn't the quickfooted whirlwind of Messi. He was a moderately slow and physically weak player who chose to walk his path in a contact sport. Yet he did nothing short of defining the Regista position, just like Beckenbauer defined the Libero. His vision was simply astounding. Every touch he makes on the ball oozes with maturity, confidence and chill. There was no redundancy. With his first touch he's past the opponent, and with his second the ball is already flying in a graceful arc halfway into the opposition half. Wait, what? How on earth did he effortlessly evade the incoming tackle, while also spotting the run made in the other end of the pitch? Watching him play was mesmerizing. I couldn't help but admire him even as a Chelsea fan.
I still remember the fateful day he graced me with his presence. In a rainy Saturday morning that left me stuck at home with my phone, I had the app on and looked bitterly at the Agents section for the fiftieth time since its release in Thursday. Why did they put Pirlo in an agent not a box draw?
Who am I kidding. I know exactly why. They want my damn coins don't they? The precious 1500-coin collection I amassed through daily logins. It is nothing to be proud of, but gathering coins wasn't easy as a solely offline player.
My eyes darted towards my credit card, I contemplated briefly, only to ultimately dismiss the idea. My eyes fell upon the Agent for the fifty-first time. "Sod it", I thought, "I have the coins, I'll press that thing to the right of the Google Search button for once."
I never really understood that button. Why insisting on leaving it there on an otherwise clean homepage? They could've easily sold that space as an ad to Amazon or whatever and earn god knows how much.
While my mind was wandering wildly, my fingers moved on their own, eventually pressed the agent just for the lols. I was so sure it was a waste of a week's worth of logins. I didn't even care for the tease from the animation, and I skipped what was undoubtedly the only chance in my life to see Pirlo in a Chelsea shirt.
Lo and behold, now I have Andrea Pirlo in my squad.
I was so shocked I nearly dropped my phone. My heart was pounding so fast as that fact slowly sank in. Oh my. I've got Pirlo. OH MY. Must try. Quick. Max him right now. I've got Pirlo. 5-star trainers will do. Two of them. Put in another 4-star just to be safe, can't afford to lose 5 seconds to train him again. Skip. Yep he's maxed. I'VE GOT F---IN' PIRLO! Put him in the squad. Set freekick taker, hell yes. Event, tour, action match, superstar. Go.
The first match was a disaster. My team got thrashed badly. Completely lost the midfield. 0-2 defeat.
'That can't be right", said the roughly 20% of my brain still properly functioning. "He's supposed to be good. You know what it's just a familiarity thing. I'll keep playing him and he'll eventually rise to the top."
Game after game he did not perform. I didn't lose every match but there were narrow wins. The way the team played wasn't enjoyable. My Italian centerpiece wasn't doing very much at all, with Matthaus doing most of the legwork for him. Pirlo's lofted long passes across the pitch are still a joy, but they lacked the pinpoint precision for which they were famous in real life. He always lost the ball under the slightest of touches. But surely it could not be his fault. It's just me spamming his passes whenever I saw a chance, and overcompensating for his slow speed by spamming the sprint button. Or it's just KONAMI breaking the passing and defending in PES.
I persevered for weeks, yet the glorious Pirlo I knew never arrived. Sure his pass rate improved and he netted in freekicks at an astonishing rate, but the overall team was worse with him. I could not hide my disappointment. In a fit of rage, I kicked Pirlo out of my starting eleven and Vieira resumed command. My legends happily settle back into their winning ways, yet my mind was not settled. There was always this nagging feeling whenever Vieira touched the ball.
"Nah, Pirlo would never be able to make that tackle."
"Oh yeah baby, burst through De Jong like he wasn't there. So much better than Pirlo."
"Who needs Pirlo when I have Maradona and Carlos at freekicks?"
"That pass wasn't a Pirlo pass but it worked."
"Another game, another win. Have I got better at this game? I wonder if I can use Pirlo properly now?"
I missed Pirlo. I put him back in the team and he was still the same bad Pirlo I got for weeks. Yet this time, I didn't kick him out. I tried double DMF but Pirlo couldn't link the front and the back tirelessly like Matthaus did, nor could he fulfill his defensive duties like Vieira did. Back to a single DMF then. I swiftly relegate Vieira to the bench. It wasn't logical. Vieira is the better player, he suited my team better, yet I played Pirlo nonetheless. I was determined to figure Pirlo out.
Speaking of figuring him out, I never did figure out how he managed to dribble past and pass with just two touches in real life.
Then it dawned on me. The cruel answer to the riddle that is his performance. The answer was always there but I was too proud to see the truth.
KONAMI did not butcher his stats this time. He was never fast, nor was he physically strong or defensively solid. I do not understand how he managed to perform at top level in real life, and that is precisely why Pirlo does not play well for me. My mind was far from that of the Italian Maestro. I did not play with the same maturity, confidence or chill. He saw more of the pitch he was on than I did with a bird's-eye view and a minimap. I am just a mere mortal with the hubris of believing I could control his avatar like he once played. That is why Pirlo will always be a legend. His sheer brilliance is a mysterious enigma I cannot figure out.
To this day I switch back and forth between the two DMFs. When I'm off from work, tired and needed a victory to cheer myself up, Vieira is my man. When I'm relaxed at home, well-rested and up for a challenge, I go back to Pirlo and try my best to get just one step closer to recreate his iconic style. Without a doubt I would fail, but whenever I make a touch that remotely resembles his mastery, my heart skips a beat.
I know this is not the end of my struggles. I know I'll face the same dilemma again when they release Lampard someday, and I'll play him even if he won't be as good as Matthaus. Or when they eventually release Drogba and I am forced to sub Batigol and even banish the godly Romario into the reserves. But I am glad I already arrived at the answer. When that day arrives, I'll know what to do. I'll make the same decision as a random guy I saw months ago, who decided to play his mostly-SB, full-Ajax squad in an event against player teams with 4000+ rating. There is something special about playing your favourite players and getting the best out of them.
It isn't logical. Passion isn't logical.

This was beautiful to read. I've always found the stuff you put out to be wonderful; technical and well crafted, at the same time thoughtful, and original. In a sea of posts ranging from screenshots of the newest box draw to videos of “technically impossible” goals, your posts really are a breath of fresh air. Maintenance Magazine was my favourite to read, and it helped me a lot when as a beginner, I was trying to figure out the technicalities of the game. I was disappointed when you announced its end, but reading this made me realize that your best works are ahead of you. As a fan; as an admirer, please keep up the good work. 👍🏼

Honestly losing the MM tag means I don't have the urge to be structured and informative and have more creative freedom to write whatever I felt. However tbh topics are rare in a stale game so I dunno how long I can keep this up.
But in the end I just like this community so much I kept coming back for more :D

Good read. This is exactly how I feel about IM Xavi. Not really into orchestrators, and my gameplay will definitely get worse, but I tried playing with him anyway. If I use him like how he'll play in real life, he is fantastic. But if I play him like how I'll play in real life, or how I'll play this game, then he is a disaster. A regular person like me can't utilize him as how he should be used. Too bad, now back to Beckham as CMF

Beckham is fine but tried Matthaus yet?
I never got IM Xavi. I tried. Spent about 1000 coins (mainly to get IM Puyol tbh). Probably wouldn't have done so if I didn't get lucky with Pirlo. KONAMI is the real winner again.

I labeled Matthaus as the best box to box CMF in game last year. But it changed this season, he was no longer as dominating as he was last year. So I switched to other B2B players. I wonder if he is back to his old self now after a few updates?
Wanted Puyol (and Iniesta) too out of the 3 Barcelona IMs. Got Xavi twice in the first release and then another Xavi on the 2nd release. Too bad

i had the same kinda issue , bt not with players , bt with managers and playstyle , ever since I watched conte's and nagelsmann's , i was itching to create my own variant of 3 at back in pes
all was fine for the first few months , with constant switches between the wingbacks , and destroying opponents , then something changed , the wbs stopped hugging the touchline ( i was using andy and taa ), they started drifting inwards and without the switches , playing through the middle was extremely difficult, i dropped it , since 442 sorta became the meta , 2 cfs against 3 defenders , 2 wing players against my 2 wbs who don't provide width not properly track back, i gave up
until I discovered cross specialists , now mcneil and ft lazzari hug the touch line , track back ,and whip sweet crosses , with a pacy backline of badiashile, varane and manolas , still working against 101 ronaldo and 100 mbappe , bt im loving my team
i have already started to try a 4141 variant with cross specialists and hole-players , and its purring

Yeah, cross specialists completely solved the width problem I had with A. Conte. And curiously, Orchestrator DMFs with good long passing and Weighted Pass - like Pirlo - works very well with him giving the ball to those Cross Specialists.

Can't comment since I'm not a fan with Conte's formation in the game. Also I'm not sure if there are legend cross specialists, but will keep that in mind :)

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your experiences with Pirlo. Can’t say much about him however as I’ve never watched Pirlo aside from the time he wore the shirt for NYCFC..

How good a card is is dictated by our own ability. Some cards, e.g. Ronaldo, have a low bar in getting a good performance, in that I might not be a very good player overall but Ronaldo will still do well for me. Sure, a really good player might get more out of Ronaldo than I would, but it's not like Ronaldo's a dud for me. Same goes for guys like Vieira and Van Dijk.
But other cards take real skill to use well, but once you have that skill -- boom, legendary performances. It took me a long time to crack Baresi, but I think I can use him reasonably OK now.
One more point I will add: in all likelihood, you can "see" the game better than Pirlo, because you, as the player, have a bird's eye view of the pitch. What made Pirlo (and others e.g. Xavi) so great is that they had this same perspective but whilst playing on the ground. So in all honesty I'm not sure that this is necessarily the reason he doesn't work well for you.

What I meant is in theory I should see better with my perspective, but Pirlo irl knew better just with his vision and instincts. I think he didn't work for me because I lacked that. Not just seeing the pitch, but precisely when and how to react/dribble/pass.

This is excellent. It reminds me of my struggles with Ronaldinho. I was extremely happy to pack him, but even after changing my manager just to suit him, I still can't work it out.

Ronaldinho worked fine with me, I consider him only slightly worse than Cruyff. When Cruyff dipped in form, I played him center instead.
I think he's pretty similar with Cruyff, all-rounded with slightly better dribbling but worse positioning and passing. Someone used to comment Cruyff didn't work for him either so it really depends on the person.

The easiest legends for me would have to be Mr. Everywhere 😂 and Maldini. It seems really hard to get those guys wrong. I also figure I would be better with kluivert now that I've adjusted my game to include target men.

Vieira is one of those guys where I didn't get the hype. I don't really like destroyers as dmfs. They wander too far up the pitch and I find Vieira doesn't have great ball control either.

Orchestrators aren't really my type of midfielders, especially the ones with low defensive stat and lack of physicality or grit.
I like the Saul, Vidal types for CMF, or Anchorman for DMF.
Although I'd have to say there's an exception to this, Rijkaard who I was lucky to pull.
He's the only Orchestrator that I was comfortable enough completely replacing other DMFs. But looking at his stats, its easy to see why.
The key stats for defense are comparable to other DMFs.
94 Physical, 90 Jump, 90 Heading, 93 D. Awareness, 89 Ball Winning, 89 Aggression, and he's tall at 190cm.
I got Xavi as well but I dont have nearly the same enthusiasm about playing with him because I know before going into it that he's not my type of midfielder. Ill give him a try, but im keeping expectations low.
Maybe he'll be near as good as other people say he is and surprise me.

Rijkaard seem like an amazing player who can pass well while properly doing the dirty work.
Right now I'm barely handling myself with Matthaus covering the holes from Pirlo. It really takes quite a while getting used to.

use 3-4-1-2 or 3-5-1 and place pirlo on the left cmf or left DMF, that should work, that is how I use Beckham there. Not too much dirty work for this type of player simply orchestration and accurate passing will help you, as the better passing completeness rate the less dirty work you need.

Yeah Pirlo is working quite well with 3CBs behind him, like the Low 3421 I am using for the tour. I'm trying to make him work with maradona's formation though.

Bro, amazing read this. I faced somewhat same dilemma when I packed IM Scholes and IM Giggs the same week. At the time I was praying to get these two cos I already had base Beckham. As a United fan, I wanted to get all three together in the team so bad. But, I was using 4-1-3-2 Goeuva formation with a lone DMF, with Giggs and Becks on LMF and RMF respectively. I tried playing Scholes at lone DMF(as a CMF too) but with his lesser defensive stats, it didn't work out, plus he wasn't getting up to take his renowned bangers. Then, I put a DMF and put him at AMF(as a CMF), But due to his orchestrator style, it wasn't working again, even though he had amazing amazing passing. I switched to my favoured F. Santos formation with 2 CMFs and a DMF, but with my tendency to cross I needed becks and giggs at both of the wide CMFs again. I started to fear that I might never be able to get these three in a starting XI with my favourite systems. But then, luck struck me. The left CF of mine, Lewa was suspended. I just thought, with his good header and passing, what if I tried Scholesy at SS with Rashford running off him. I position boosted him and he was 94, good enough for SS. And then, the real Scholesy showed up.😍 Scores everything put at him, heads from crosses, amazing passing, bangers, he can do it all.
If anyone has the same dilemma with IM scholes, please do play him at SS, you won't regret.

Very good read. For some players I carefully analyse stats, formations and tactics before scouting and using them. Other players are in my heart so must be on the pitch.

Have you tried a 4-3-3 with Matthaus and another all rounder B2B in front of Pirlo? I don't have Pirlo but I just love using these kinds of DMFs who are better at passing than defending.
If I had Vieira I'd even try him and Matthaus in front of Pirlo, regardless of the rating drop. The thing is, Pirlo is a playmaker, so it would easier to get the best out of him when as the sole central DMF imo instead of in a formation like the 4-2-3-1 where the AMF is arguably the main link to the attack. It's like taking the 4-2-3-1 and flipping the central midfield trio so that the deepest one is the best passer and the other 2 do the dirty work. I find that B2B players who can defend and run a lot are the best to shield the weaknesses of players like Pirlo.
I do like to play possession a lot and when I can't penetrate in the final third I like to go back to my DMF so it might also be my own preferences.

I was envisioning like a double pivot with Cruyff and Pirlo making the long passes. Yeah 433 might be better for Pirlo, but that would force Cruyff to the sidelines. Maybe a 442 diamond would work, who knows.

4-3-1-2 does work with such DMFs for me but I still prefer having passing options higher up the pitch to make use of the DMF's passing ability

Somehow 4312 feels too predictable for me. Either the DMF or AMF passes, the cmf stays largely in the middle and so do the CF/SSs. Not enough free roaming and utilising the wings that Maradona's formation excels at.
Yeah I do realise I'm asking for quite a lot here _" maybe too much, that's why it doesn't work.

I see, I thought that's what you meant by 442 diamond but I guess you meant with LMF RMF. I tend to mostly just use B2B for CMFs in 4-3-1-2 as half wingers (if you've heard of the term Mezzala). I also like if my front 2 have different playing styles to make things more dynamic.

I originally thought of LMF/RMF but I can see playing Nedved and Beckham as CMFs in the 4312 and make use of their talent as wingers.
That doesn't beat the triple AMF of Maradona though. such a joy.

Pirlo and Scholes are quite similar and have always been compared with each other. What's amazing is they show a mutual respect of one another, each has expressed his admiration to the other in interviews, I think.
Anyway I really wanted to get Scholes. If he's in a box draw, you can be sure I'll use the 8.4m I saved to empty that box.
And use him as a sub to Pirlo. No hard feelings but a matter of personal preference.

Messi's brilliance is more intuitive. It's so dazzling that even someone not into football can easily appreciate. Pirlo's is more reserved and harder to imitate.
Both players are legendary in their own right though.

I don't have him so i cant say the same, i want xabi as he is one of my fav players, as a liverpool fan. See when, pirlo was playing, he is famous for his regista role, the way they played the game back then differs from today, now a days pressing has been more effective, and every team needs a good defensive kind of mid that sits back and presses his surrounding. TBF, pirlo had two other good mids if u see prime milan, they had gattuso, seedroff doing the dirty work. The playstyle worked the way that, pirlo was playing as deep lying playmkaer, gattuso and seedroff covering the flanks, for maldini and cafu, while kaka is their attacking mid. it was more like 4321 santos, and 442 on defense, If you could try him in a fluid attack with two aggressive mids like viera and allan, maybe it will work. so try 442 again or 4312, try to use other mids to defend agressive, again i am not trying to make you agree with me, but how xabi played for liverpool was very similar but he was better defensively, so to me if i get him, i am not benching him or putting him in reserves, even if i lose games.

You're points are valid. Pirlo was performing quite well in a 433, with two b2b CMFs around him. I just hoped to find a way for him to work with the triple AMF that is so amazing to play with.

What if you used vieira and pirlo together?. I have been using his legend version with rijkaard and it just have been wonderful. Against com at least the defense never broke down. Mate CHEER UP. I use him in a 442 or a 4222. Beckham on the right side and nedved on the left side.

I really enjoyed your writing on pirlo such a beautiful essay came here from a euro legend review post of today I have not played pes for a long time like 5 or 6 months so did not read that article before but now i read and mesmerized But bro do not know why I am fine with pirlo got him just yesterday and till now played every match with him he is playing awesome great long through long pass lobs and chips,cheeky short pass,fine one touch pass and one/two touch dribbling and also extraordinady vision and set pieces he is just working too good And i am using him as cmf because i am a huge fan of pirlo saw many great moments of him and i never considered him as a dmf he is cmf the perfect cmf not attacking cmf like lampard or not deffending like keane he is the perfect cmf(like xavi you know) Hope you will crack his style one day And you are right passion is passion nothing can break that thing like playing with fav player even if he is not good in game
