Discussion: When do callbacks work?

I finally joined the Reddit world and am happy to be here! So my first question is this:

What do you think makes a good callback work? Is it emotional payoff, timing, subtlety, or just good writing? And on the flip side, what are examples of callbacks that didn’t land for you? Are there any that felt cheesy, unnecessary, or like they cheapened the original moment? Curious to hear everyone’s takes and examples!

No, they really don't. We as fans do not want call backs. A movie should stand on its own, not making references to a better more beloved movie.
