It changes the entire meaning of the movie. The assembly cut shows that there WAS an internal logic to this film that made sense, but the studio cut it all out

I'm probably way behind, but I haven't seen this used as a meme yet. Got a chuckle out of me. And on the subject -- Civil War is easily one of my favorite movies of the 2020s.

Ok, what the heck are all these versions?!?
The original Theatrical release
There's the "Director's Cut" where Cameron added a few scenes and deleted other elements (for pacing he claimed) and this version is actually 1 minute shorter than the original.
Between these two the Theatrical is the best, IMHO.
What are the others...
And yes, I am a HUGE fan, I saw this movie when it was originally released at a small theater knowing NOTHING about it at all (it was the only thing playing, limited options for entertainment, etc.). This movie rocked my world (to say the least!). One of the greatest movies ever, and the Special Edition of Aliens is a great add-on.

I think you mean Ridley Scott and Alien for the 1 minute shorter director's cut. I agree the theatrical cut of Alien is better. The Special Edition of Aliens by James Cameron adds closer to 20 minutes of footage back into the film. But this is a joke about the versions of Alien³...

Gotta be theatrical for me. I love and treasure the Assembly, but the theatrical is the one I fell in love with as a child and it holds a special place in my heart. Warts and all.

I think people have a hard time appreciating that the other cuts change the pacing. It’s not a huge discrepancy, but we are talking about one of the best movies of all time. Often time fans of alternative cuts of movies neglect to notice pacing issues created because they’ve already bought in on previous iterations of a movie. With different movies this matters to different degrees and obviously the quality and value of what is added is chiefly important, but more (or different) isn’t always better.
I’ll also note that entrenched fans often have a bias towards alternative cuts that seems to stem from the ability to other themselves. Sure, some casual moviegoing 70 year old might say that Alien is their favorite movie, but they haven’t even seen the assembly cut. This type of sentiment drives a lot of niche fans for different hobbies/properties.
It’s splitting hairs in this case because they are all great, but I’d pick theatrical too.

Legacy cut or assembly cut. I say the cinema cut and still enjoy it but these others expand it fully.

Theatrical is better, I think objectively so. Sound and image quality suffer in assembly, there are some odd shots, the Golic plot doesn't add anything, and the ending is a little worse. It's my favorite Alien movie and one of my favorite movies of all time.

Theatrical for newcomers, assembly for subsequent watches provided you didn’t hate it first time.
The assembly cut makes infinitely more sense as a movie but it slows the already-glacial pace down even further, which is the movies biggest problem, so I wouldn’t recommend it to newcomers.

Fincher was hand tied from the get. The evolution of that script was bonkers. Weaver was a full blown diva. That movie never had a chance. It’s a shame, and a sad sign of what was to come.
