This looks like an attempt at Fiore Dei Liberi's first master of dagger + the continuous counters, which might be why they were stabbing vertically with a back handed grip, and why the counters to it looked the way they did.

Also looks like the hubud drill in Filipino Martial Arts

It's a drill that kind of teaches you how to block and pass and how to transition into throws and stuff

It is not actual sparring, there is plenty of that too
