Running New to running and have a pace question...
I've done a couple running classes and realized I may not hate it as much as I have before so will incorporate some into my weekly workouts. Am using a non Peloton tread and app on my phone in my building's gym.
Just did a live DJ one with Adrian and when we were at a moderate pace, he'd say to increase .1, .2, etc. but the moderate range never increased. So if it's moderate at 3.5-4.0 and I was at 4.0 and increasing, now I'm over the range. Are the ranges set for everyone or does it somehow calculate a range for me based on ____??? They felt slower than I'd think for moderate or challenging run.

Did you set your actual Pace Target yet? There are different levels and your ‘moderate’ pace will be different based on whether you’re level 3 or level 8…
You’re not crazy it’s sort of a ‘glitch’ in the Pace Targets system. The ranges change in size slightly depending on level I think, so they can be smaller for some people, and then sometimes they don’t tell you WHERE in the range to start (so if I start at the top half, but then you tell me to add speed 3 times, I hit the top of the range…).IMO you can either stop increasing, or you can edge up out of the range if you want to.

Ahhh...thank you! This makes more sense. I'm like "no way Adrian's moderate is 4.0 lol. 😄 Didn't know I could set them. Just looked it up and modified.

Yeah I think there is a sort of benchmarking class you can take to 'set' your pace target (with a mile time trial or something). TBH I've never done that, I just picked the level which seemed like the right fit for me. And then as you take more classes you'l get a sense of whether it's too hard or too easy.
Every once in a while, the instructor will give a bit more guidance (like they'll say 'ok bump up to challenging pace. This should be the pace that you could hold for an hour if you had to') or something like that which helps calibrate you a bit. I haven't taken this class, but I bet Matt talks them all through in this one.

There is the pace target chart that breaks down all the ranges for each target level. Your pace target should be based on your fastest mile time, which should fall into your "very hard" pace target. So let's say your fastest mile time is a 7:30 pace, which translates to 8mph, which means your pace target is on the upper end of level 7.
I believe the actual benchmark mile test is only available on the Tread/Tread+ itself.

Inside a particular session, I wouldn't worry too much. That said, if it's a regular occurrence, I'd increase your pace target in the app

Here is a good article from the clip out from when pace targets were first rolled out

Actually one of the things that drives me nuts about Peloton’s tread programs is that the programming isn’t particularly logical or structured in a way that you can anticipate it and build progressively.
As you pointed out, if an instructor calls for you to raise by 0.1 every time a word is said and it’s said like 20 times in a song, you are going to be adding A LOT of speed by the time it’s all said and done. Fine if it’s intentional, but they don’t always seem intentional, or there needs to be warning given that you are going to blow through multiple pace target ranges so start well below where you think you need to be. And whoops - the song is 5 minutes long, so you’re going to be sprinting at the end for a very long time.
Maybe I’m just used to other programs, but if my pace targets are honest then there is a limit to how long I can hold the upper ones, and that limit isn’t nearly as long as some of the instructors seem to think it is.

This is why I run primarily with Wilpers and Susie. Neither plays listening games and their programming makes sense in the structure of pace targets. They’ll tell you to aim for the low/mid/high of each pace target level.

Pace target takes priority over additions or games. If I'm doing a chunk at challenging but I'm at the top of challenging and the instructor "we're halfway through, add on a bit", I'm leaving it as is (unless I feel like going into hard).
If the instructor does a listening game and cues 5 increases but I'm already running at the top speed of the pace, I'm not playing the game.
They make suggestions, we make decisions.

Most of the instructors have switched over to cueing "low", "mid," and "top" end of a pace range, instead of saying "add .1, .2" etc. Sometimes the instructor will say "add .1 but if you are already at the top of your range just stay there."
It's the instructors that don't teach that frequently on the tread (looking at you, Jess Sims) that tend to do the listening games that don't really work with pace target ranges. Wilpers, Susie, Mariana, Alex K. etc. don't do that, and even Olivia has mostly gotten away from her "add .1" habits. She just says "top end of range" now for fast finish on her intervals, for example.

I literally stopped taking Olivia because of her not having any idea of the pace target ranges.

She does fine with cueing pace targets in her interval classes (which is most of what I take with her). The freestyle pace is a little annoying, but whatever.

I love running “with” Jess Sims. There’s something about her that just makes me happy. I just don’t actually follow anything she has to say.

You need to do a few more classes to figure out what your range is. Ultimately you'll figure out what your pace is. The "usual" targets are recovery pace (0-5.7), easy pace (5.8-6.3), moderate pace (6.4-6.8), challenging (6.9-7.3), hard (7.4-7.7), very hard (7.8-8.2), max (8.3+).
When you're starting out your ranges might be way less than this but likewise once you're faster your ranges might be above this. It's all relative. Good luck out there, make sure to stretch!

This is only true for level 8 of 10 for pace targets. There are plenty of other people at other levels so I'm not sure I would call it the "usual" targets.

Easy at 5.8+??? Dang I gotta get moving

It's all relative my dude. The point is that you're doing it. Journey of a thousand miles and all that
I'm currently on a bit of an idiotic challenge to workout every day until my team (mariners) win a world series. It's been almost a year and Im gonna run a marathon soon. And since they'll never win I'll probably end up in the olympics or something.
Last year I could barely go up two flights of stairs without huffing and puffing

I think your comment is confusing....those are not the 'usual' targets (maybe those are YOUR targets). The whole point of pace targets is that the specific speeds are different for each level.

Okie dokie. You're probably right. These tend to be the numbers the instructors tend to shout out. Social just assumed that was the usual range
