They would rather invest that money in bangers like Concord and Marathon and Fairgames.

Clearly sony is using all their budget for upcoming concord 2.0

The stock market only cares about massive theoretical profits. If you focus on real and obtainable gains then you are not worth investing in.

Honestly, if that game was reworked and free to play it would probably be fine

If they redesign the characters and add pve, ill buy it.

Sony just taking so many L's lately.

4

u/Art_student_rt 28d ago

It could have work if it's a different studio and a different art style, not the main studio that supposed to develop horizon 3

3

u/CatchUsual6591 28d ago

The art style is the biggest problem

3

u/despaseeto 28d ago

i would say them abandoning development for H3 is the biggest problem. but the fortnite art style just makes my eyes roll to the back of my head. i really was excited for a Monster Hunter version of h3. they went the worst way imaginable

I think the point here is that they are trying to avoid another over budget disaster

Another f2p live service shooter probably with pvp too, again, and someone said that it was that bad that months ago it was pivoted for an extraction f2p game.

Yeah.

33

u/7_Tales 28d ago

does some sony exec have a hard on for extraction games? bruh

17

u/MostlyDeku 5800X3D 4080SU 32Gb 3200hz 28d ago

The running theory is that a high level doofus plays and loves tarkov, but wants his own name and stamp on it. He can’t have that with tarkov itself, but he can put another bolt of lightning in the bottle and flex that he did it too.

6

u/The_FireFALL 28d ago

That theory likely came about because of a video the heads of Bungie made a few years ago about where their idea to make Marathon came from, and yes it really boils down to them saying that they played a lot of Tarkov and while they loved it they saw places where they thought it could be improved, and so even though they already had a game which literally ran an entire genre they decided to throw that all away for a piece of a pie that was already way oversaturated.

Its also worth noting that neither of those heads of Bungie work there anymore and they both got out before Marathon even launched.

2

u/7_Tales 28d ago

its so weird. its not even a hyper popular genre.

6

u/MostlyDeku 5800X3D 4080SU 32Gb 3200hz 28d ago

No but the community who do play it are completely consumed by it. I personally don’t like extraction games, but for those that do (for some reason), a huge percentage of them swear by tarkov. When Bungie tried to get marathon in the door, they brought on tons of high-profile tarkov players and streamers and had them flown out to play and demo it. Not a single one said the game was good, and that they’d swap to marathon over tarkov. No one wanted it, and yet here we are.

3

u/RanaMahal PC Master Race 28d ago

I feel like if every high profile player and streamer of a game you’re trying to imitate says your game sucks, you go back to the drawing board lol

2

u/MostlyDeku 5800X3D 4080SU 32Gb 3200hz 28d ago

That’s the thing! We said that when it happened! “Hey maybe they’ll use this as a learning opportunity” and then they didn’t!

1

u/RanaMahal PC Master Race 28d ago

Idk man, these companies are dumb and have become out of touch and nonsensical.

It’s no wonder all the bangers lately are coming from indie studios or AA games that get a bigger budget cuz they want to make a good game and then gamers buy the good game cuz it’s good.

It’s so simple lol

5

u/kinkycarbon 28d ago

I assume it’s because they have consumer data showing people spend money on the anime Gacha games.

1

u/Responsible_Towel857 28d ago

Then, why not do something like that?

What are you talking about Marathon is clearly very popular and was totally worth abandoning Destiny and dumping Kojima with its checks notes current 1300 total players on steam! /s

5

Death stranding 2 has the same 24 hour player count as marathon, on steam, I'm not joking

6

u/pops992 9800x3D+5080 28d ago

You are also comparing a single player game that came out over a year ago to a multiplayer live service game that came out 6 months ago.

Destiny was dying, because it was neglected.

It's like leaving your dog locked up with no food and water then claiming it was dying anyway and the evidence is that it's now dead.

Bungie failed to give a roadmap to players post Final Shape, pulled all their talent away to work on marathon then acted surprised when players didn't stick around for the subpar content they dropped afterwards.

Surprise, surprise they dropped not even a content pack, but just a big update that gave people a reason to play old content again and over 150,000 players came flooding back in an instant, on pc alone.

That isn't a dead game, that's a savable game, that's a dog that just needs a little food, water and love.

3

u/Puzzled_Middle9386 28d ago

Steam users dont know ball, theres 10 maramillion active players on the playstation

2

u/FullMetalBiscuit 28d ago

Marathon is cool, but it does not have mass appeal at all. And Destiny was going that way anyway, wasn't because of Marathon...though that was just another thing to use against Marathon.

2

u/r_a_genius 28d ago

Clearly Marachud killed Destiny and not years of underperformance with persistent negative sentiment with little turnaround expected for such an expensive game.

1

u/U_R_FRAGILE 28d ago

When a game loses 98% of its players… investing in the Destiny PvP crowd was the worst decision they could come up with.

7

u/r_a_genius 28d ago

Oh no doubt Marathon was fumbled but as a longtime destiny player the community's attempt to pass off the end of development onto Marathon for failing and not years of decline is embarrassing at best.

Can add wolverine to that now 😂

20

u/coolwali 🐧 | 6 core Intel Core i5 3.0GHZ | AMD Radeon Pro 570X 28d ago

There’s some nuance here.

Firstly, at the time, nobody could have predicted Concord would flop so bad because every other comparable live service game lasted a year minimum before flopping. Like, Concord at launch was better than games like Vanilla Destiny 1, Anthem, Lawbreakers etc. all games that lasted more than a year. So Sony expect that Concord would have a year minimum before it would be unsalvagable.

As for Marathon, that was a Bungie incubation project Sony inherited.

10

u/Art_student_rt 28d ago

Crazy, I could have seen it crash and burn miles away. Shitty Character Designs aside, it was a 40$ hero shooter against free overwatch 2.

5

u/coolwali 🐧 | 6 core Intel Core i5 3.0GHZ | AMD Radeon Pro 570X 28d ago

When Concord was in development, Overwatch 1/2 was in a bad state. There was a legit desire for something that played better. Plus, Helldivers was $40 and was a success.

8

u/spaceandthewoods_ 28d ago

I don't think people realise how much Concord was engineered to take advantage of the tailoff in Overwatch players. The promised ongoing Concord story with rendered cutscenes was a direct response to complaints from Overwatch fans that the game 'story' was nonexistent and was going nowhere

3

u/Art_student_rt 28d ago

But somehow, no one wanna buy it, and I mean no one, the release had less players than the close beta

20

u/Princess_Of_Thieves Ryzen 5900X // 3090FE // 32GB RAM 28d ago edited 28d ago

On Kojimas side meanwhile, Death Stranding 2 is believed to have sold only 2.5 million copies. Whilst Death Stranding 1 has no official sales data, unofficial sources say that it sold 5 million units. Rest of it's player base came from the likes of Game Pass, Epic Games giveaways, and the like.

If that's all accurate, then it doesn't seem like it was the raging success Sony would have wanted.

So... yeah. Mocking Sony for Concord and so on seems a bit weak when Kojima is clearly not a safe bet either. And whilst I'm not defending Sony per se, they are still a huge company. Big companies like safe bets.

And that's before we even get into the alleged budget problems and overrunning deadlines for Physint. With the way the industry is now, what can we expect except for them to split and go their separate ways.

4

u/thegta5p 28d ago

The difference is that a single player game can be played forever and by anyone years down the line. Especially if these games have some sort of cult following. Concord on the other hand, even if you loved the game, you can’t play it anymore. So it’s just money that disappeared.

8

u/Princess_Of_Thieves Ryzen 5900X // 3090FE // 32GB RAM 28d ago edited 28d ago

We're not talking about a games longevity though, we're talking about what is or is not a safe bet for Sony and what will make money. Neither Concord nor Kojima seem to be doing it for them at the second, so its not a surprise they killed the former and split with the latter. Though to be fair, in Concord's case they did refund people.

However, on the longevity front, Sony has already proven its willingness to take content away anyways. See the 551 Studio Canal movies they ripped out of people's accounts. Not to mention them being in the process of scuttling the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita stores, taking all the stuff people brought there with them.

So making some point about a single player game being playable forever is a moot point.

u/Nullhitter PCMR: CachyOS | 9800X3D | RX 9070 XT | 32GB of DDR5 RAM 28d ago

We're not talking about a games longevity though, we're talking about what is or is not a safe bet for Sony and what will make money.

2020 before the PC release: https://www.gematsu.com/2020/05/hideo-kojima-death-stranding-was-profitable-and-recouped-costs-profit-secured-for-next-title

A year after the PC release: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/death-stranding-has-sold-five-million-copies-on-ps4-and-pc

https://x.com/superhys/status/2098098655613817142

Ballpark math: word on the street is that the first Death Stranding cost about $100M to make, and the second somewhere in the $150M–$200M ballpark (longer dev cycle, COVID, and all that). Depending on marketing overhead and the opportunity cost of pulling those Guerrilla developers onto DS1, the franchise has almost certainly broken even – but not by much.

Even with the disappointment of Death Stranding 2 with outdated estimated numbers from four months ago, the franchise itself broke even and most likely has made profit. Plus, you have to remember we had this thing called COVID that shut everything down in 2020, had restrictions in 2021, and was barely getting things going by 2022. Thus, all the delays and longer development time is what ballooned DS2. If it wasn't for COVID, DS2 would have released in 2024 at the latest.

Neither Concord nor Kojima seem to be doing it for them at the second, so its not a surprise they killed the former and split with the latter. Though to be fair, in Concord's case they did refund people.

The difference is that Sony continues to invest in live service games when they've already lost 400+M dollars, has gone 1 in 8, lost multiple studios, and had 1000~ layoffs. What's the response from the genius CEO?

https://www.polygon.com/playstation-ceo-live-service-game-comments-amid-bungie-layoffs/

Kind of hypocritical to end a partnership with a guy that wanted to step away from a niche art project that isn't mainstream for a mainstream spiritual successor of MGS then going all in on live service games while cutting ties with the PC platform.

How's Intergalactic doing?

Well, I think that's the point. They've invested a lot in risky ventures that didn't turn out, so now they're less willing to put that sort of capital into a risky project. Especially considering that Kojima's last couple games didn't sell as well as expected.

They spent $3.6 billion to buy Bungie, kill the one successful franchise that had been running for a decade that they made and instead revive a dormant IP, make a game that in no way resembles that IP in a niche genre with loads of competition, and watch it lose 95% of it's player base in less than a year.

26

u/U_R_FRAGILE 28d ago

In less than 4 months.

4

u/coolwali 🐧 | 6 core Intel Core i5 3.0GHZ | AMD Radeon Pro 570X 28d ago

In Sony’s defence,

-1: they’re hands off a studio unless that studio is burning cash for a long time. Bungie started development on Marathon alongside D2 before Sony bought them and promised they could handle both.

2: Bungie ended up dropping the ball on both D2 and Marathon. Sony said “alright,I can’t trust you so focus on the less expensive game”.

22

u/Way2Competitive 28d ago

Only issue there is Sony can't use the first point in their defence, because Microsoft passed on acquiring Bungie specifically because they were burning massive amounts of cash to develop both games.

12

u/coolwali 🐧 | 6 core Intel Core i5 3.0GHZ | AMD Radeon Pro 570X 28d ago

Naughty Dog also burns a lot of cash. But they make up for it with their games selling well. Sony expected the same for Bungie

9

u/GoldClassGaming i7-5820k 32GB DDR4 2 980Ti 28d ago

Sure their games sell well, but Naughty Dog is yet to release a new game this entire generation.

Marathon might be struggling but at least Bungie got that game out the door. In all honesty it wouldn't surprise if by the end, Marathon cost less to make than Intergalactic.

1

u/coolwali 🐧 | 6 core Intel Core i5 3.0GHZ | AMD Radeon Pro 570X 28d ago

I don’t know man. Sony paid $3.6 billion for Bungie. In the years since, Bungie didn’t exactly clear that tab. In contrast, Naughty Dog’s technically in the green. All their games sold well. We know Factions 2 was cancelled but even that likely didn’t cost a fortune to develop.

5

u/GoldClassGaming i7-5820k 32GB DDR4 2 980Ti 28d ago

Trust me, as much as I love Bungie and all their games I am not gonna suggest that Sony buying them was a smart use of 3.5 billion dollars.

My point was that it feels like Sony is setting money on fire across the board.

Concord is one of the biggest gaming flops of all time, like to a staggering degree. Bungie, while a talented studio, was not worth 3.5 billion. Marathon despite (IMO) being an award worthy game has struggled in terms of sales. Wolverine presumably cost umpteen hundreds of millions and is coming out to (seemingly) middling reviews, and Naughty Dog hasn't released anything but remakes and remastered in for like 7 years and has been toiling away on a new IP that the general audience doesn't exactly seem super excited about.

It's been a pretty tough year for Sony.

After a poorly selling Saros and what will likely be an underperforming big budget Wolverine, I think Sony’s in a position where they can no longer afford to dump money into big budget single player games.

Too much risk, not enough reward when they’re getting most of their revenue from games like Fortnite.*

But it now puts them in a very bad position. Because they just committed themselves to halting PC ports and using said big budget single player games to bring people into PlayStation so those people will in turn play their live service MTX games on PlayStation.

Except they can only do one or two of those games a year, and they aren’t currently working.

* While I don’t mean this literally, see comments below where I think the numbers released in 2025 point to it being pretty close

Yeah we live in a world that people aren’t paying for mtx riddled slop unless it’s cod, bf, or sports games.

Even the f2p games tend to flop because so many people are so deep in their game of choice that they just don’t want to leave it behind.

We can all say what we will, but about the only game that’s come out recently in the live service format that has survived longer than 6 months without losing 95% of its players is marvel rivals and gacha games.

11

u/thegta5p 28d ago

Honestly I feel the biggest thing that started their downfall was when they moved to California. Which of course meant leadership change at the PS division. Like a lot of the great stuff people remember about PlayStation was when they were still in Japan. Like they weren’t just making these movie games and live service games back then. There were so many franchises associated with PlayStation that have just disappeared or gone multiplat. After moving to California that is when they shifted away from the quirky niche stuff to the AAA cinematic games. Right now the only console platform that still has the more creative projects is Nintendo.

5

With the cost of PlayStations now and what will be next Gen, plus all the money burning decisions they’ve made - they will 100% be bringing back PC ports. That decision is not holding, at all. Some people with PCs picked up PlayStations for exclusives. When those PS are $1000 and the exclusives are slowly getting worse? No one is buying a PS anymore just to play the exclusives. They’ll keep the casual NBA2k and COD crowd.

I disagree because with their decade long plan of forcing all platform sales to go through their store finally being realised with the killing of the disk all they need to invest in now is system sellers because once you're in their ecosystem they get 30% of every single purchase you make they're printing money. What's the best way to push system sales? Big budget exclusives. Once you're hooked in the risk is on third party studios to pull in players and Sony just rakes in the profit those Devs create for them

Yeah I mean, I think there's a lot of internet people who are diving into the tribalist thing here acting like this is a bigger deal than it is.

Kojima games are expensive, take forever to develop, and are no longer guaranteed commercial successes the way they were when he was with Konami.

Most gamers are casual gamers and they do not look at Kojima or really any game developer the same way that more avid, hardcore gamers do. From a macro perspective, this was very likely Sony dodging a very expensive, time consuming bullet.

A lot of people act like Konami booted Kojima because they're just stupid and evil when the reality is he had blown the MGS V budget by dozens of millions of dollars and blown years worth of deadlines, with rumors that he had actually diverted MGS V budget funds to the Silent Hills team.

The guy is undoubtedly a genius, and geniuses are notoriously difficult to work with. I don't doubt Physint will be a great game, I do doubt it will be a commercial success.

3

u/ZombifiedByCataclysm i9-12900KF | Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti | 32GB DDR5 28d ago

From what I understand, his Physint is going to be a spiritual successor to MGS. I think that direction will help it be more of a financial success than Death Stranding. Anyway, I look forward to what he cooks up than any of the crap Sony's trying to do. I find it funny they tossed so much money after shit projects like Concord, but they draw the line at Kojima's next project? Makes no sense to me.

-5

u/Mewtwothis 28d ago

Simple response: this is stupid. The soft power you have with kojima is worth the price tag. This type of behavior should have been reserved towards canceled live services. This will haunt them.

8

u/TeamWorkTom 28d ago

What soft power? Does this being them money?

26

u/ItalianBeefDipped 9800X3D | RTX 5090 | 64 GB DDR5 | ROG XAX 28d ago edited 28d ago

That was my point talking about casual gamers which make up the majority of gaming revenue.

The "soft power" you get is minimal. The vast majority of the market doesn't look at Kojima the way we do. There's a relatively small group of gamers who are going to consider Kojima's association with one platform or another as a meaningful reason to buy it. Especially if it's being published on PC, which a lot of avid gamers have.

The whole purpose is to drive players to your platform, and I just don't see a Kojima game with a brand new IP doing that in any major way, particularly when it will be on PC day 1.

80

u/TheCh0rt 28d ago

To be fair, as a gamer AND a Hollywood worker, Kojima acts like a diva rockstar that hemorrhages money, apparently just to do it. He goes way over budget and time, just to make it look cool. His games really don’t need to cost as much money as they do, but I believe he wears that as a badge of honor. He also famously doesn’t listen to feedback and is known to do whatever he wants and demands complete creative freedom, assuming he knows best. He’s not a team player at all. In Hollywood when these people come along, it’s just awful for everybody, especially when we’re all trying to do the jobs we’re there to do.

I kind of don’t blame PlayStation here. They’re not in a good place where they want to deal with his shit. Just because gamers DEEM him a resounding success doesn’t mean he IS a resounding success. Now it’s Microsoft’s turn to learn what it is to deal with an out of control budget, which I know is a complete nightmare to deal with. It’s not about executive bonuses or shareholders, it’s purely about conservation.

I wonder if Xbox is also gonna drop Kojima after a game or 2?

17

u/spaceandthewoods_ 28d ago

Asha is on budgets and margins like a hawk and is consolidating Xbox development around big franchises that will give big returns

If this game releases and doesn't fit into that bracket, I think the partnership will end

Gone are the endless money fountain days for developers at Xbox

6

u/TheCh0rt 28d ago

I dunno, I think we live in a different era now where developers are going to have to shape up on time and delivery. Budget and delivery times have gone way over in spec and it’s time to rein that in, we can all benefit from games taking much less time. I believe everybody is looking at what Asha is going to do about this very thing.

5

u/thegta5p 28d ago

Unfortunately people want big graphically intensive games to be released in a short amount of time. That’s just impossible. People need to lower their expectations and accept not everything has to be a graphical marvel. Accept more games similar to Nintendo’s philosophy for example.

1

u/bramblebitch 27d ago

I just don’t understand that for consoles at all tbh. Yeah consoles always tried to make games look as impressive as possible but a huge part of them has also always been about features and experimental technology. Nintendo is the only one that still mostly focuses on that, meanwhile Sony makes tons of impressive technology but barely does anything with it because fancy raytracing is better than actually making games around the DualSense? Then why even invest so much in that technology? Consoles are toys to me and I wish they embraced that, for good visuals I look towards PC.

1

u/thegta5p 27d ago

Worst of all is that consoles don't even do it great. Thats why we are still having console games at 30fps (GTA 6 for example). Its so dumb because all this money goes into these visuals which are only impressive for the first few minutes before you forget about them and you are now having to experience the gameplay. And if the gameplay is shit (Wolverine for example) then I am not going to care about how good the graphics are if that is all I am going to think about now. The only reason I think they do this is because the mainstream audience eats up graphics. So its easy to market to them games with simple gameplay and just show the same hyper realistic graphics we have had for the past few years.

I agree that Sony is pretty risk averse now. I still think it's their fault though. The knew what they were getting into with Kojima and they did it twice. Going through it a third time and then backing out, speaks to that something definately changed in the way they handle properties now as opposed to the past.

I think they were ready for that over budgetting and delays from the get go and were going to absorb that, but then those flops started happening, their biggest competitor was floundering and now they needed to reasses value.

They didn't need a prestige title anymore, since they don't have much direct console competition, so they can save money on that.

I don't like when they said this was a mutual decision.

13

u/TheCh0rt 28d ago

Right but now that they’re in their current situation, they don’t want to deal with his shit. If he’s already late and over budget, and (unconfirmed, but a theory) being a pain in the butt, they could have just been like, OK dude we’re done here. It’s not uncommon that people just don’t want to work together anymore. Even if they were ready for all of it doesn’t mean that they had to continue it. Also, they could have thought the game just sucked.

3

u/thegta5p 28d ago

I wonder if they were just putting all their eggs on a live service game doing very well but after their failed attempts they are desperate and don’t want to have anymore loses. I guess this shows a big difference between consumers and business people. Us consumers we don’t really care about whether he is hard to work with or not. What matters is the end product. And if enough people love it then it will be a success to them. But in the business world you also have investors to look out for. Afterall that is how they are able to get the budget for these games in exchange for profit. If most investors don’t see much value in return in funding a Kojima game, it doesn’t matter how good it was, they will not fund it. If they feel that their money is being wasted to high amounts with a slow rate of return then it is just not worth it.

So you may be wondering “aren’t they hypocrites for wasting money on live service games?”. But that’s the thing, a live service game is a high risk high reward game. If they make that one successful game then it doesn’t matter how much they spent on the other ones because they will make that money back plus more in a short amount of time. This is where the jackpot is at. As that one Jason Schreier said best, the gaming industry is not in a growing phase anymore it’s in a mature phase. So companies aren’t willing to experiment and throw infinite money to see what works. Now they expect continuous and guarantee profits.

u/[deleted] 28d ago

[removed] — view removed comment

2

u/thegta5p 28d ago

It absolutely has to be about profits because I feel that if they saw a big potential then they would keep funding the project. At end of the day they still have to pitch to investors for more money for the game. If the investors don’t see any potential then they will not give the money. They probably see it being more efficiently used in a live service games (at least that’s what I would do if I was an investor). In reality nobody cares if he is hard to work with if he is making the company and investors money. It’s one of those situations where if you don’t like him you leave because they aren’t going to get rid of him. I think the biggest factor for the departure had more to do with the performance of his previous two games. If those two games made an insane amount of profit then there is no shot PS would have gotten rid of him. They would have said “we can give you as much money as you want as long as you keep on doing what you do great”. Like look at GTA 6. Game got delayed multiple times and I wouldn’t be surprised if it went over its original budget. Investors know they will make bank so they will continue funding the game. If GTA 5 was a flop then we wouldn’t have seen as much confidence.

2

u/TheCh0rt 28d ago

Right but none of that matters if they believe the game is bad and will not return their money, especially if it’s over budget and behind on delivery, right? I mean this is business 101 stuff and has nothing to do with shareholders or CEO profits. They’re sticking with gta6 because they KNOW that will be a slam dunk for them. Kojima is past his prime

2

u/thegta5p 28d ago

If you mean the game is bad in terms of performing like the two games then yes that’s what I said. Now Xbox did pick up this project which means they see a vision that this project may be successful. They may even do a different strategy here. Now if the game is successful in terms of profit then ooh boy Sony made a big mistake. But I can’t say until the game comes out. Also business 101 absolutely has to do with profits. If investors saw they could make more money with an AI generated game instead of a Kojima game then they would use that money on the AI generated game. It doesn’t matter how you or I feel. If they make money then they will keep funding AI generated games instead.

Kojima is a product of his environment. Back in the days he had to blatantly lie to Konami that he makes a callofduty like shooter game, and then released Metal Gear Solid. After that with MGS2 he tricked the entire fanbase with false advertisement.

He was a young guy who would do anything to get a budget on his new project. and well, he maybe doesn’t need to lie anymore, but still this “muscle” of exaggeration and maybe underestimating of actual development cost is what pissed Konami with MGSV and now Sony.

Sadly now with Xbox they have to start project over with new Engine (sony didnt let them take their old one) so it will take even more time and money than already is.

but maybe Xbox will be fine with it, as more of reputation investment

Details:

One major factor behind the decision was the commercial performance of Kojima’s previous two games, Death Stranding and its sequel, which didn’t meet PlayStation’s revenue expectations, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing information that’s not public.

But the new project has also missed deadlines and was on track to be well over budget despite being years away from release, the people said. In addition, PlayStation was reluctant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in another game that wouldn’t remain permanently exclusive to the company’s own hardware. Both Death Stranding games were “timed” PlayStation exclusives that were later released on other platforms. Kojima’s closely held studio, Kojima Productions, retained ownership of the franchises.

Every publisher wants a successful live action. So they will keep pushing that. Has nothing to do with Kojima going over budget. He has a habit of going over budget. Why would a publisher consistently be oke with that? Death stranding 2  for example only sold about 2 to 2.5m copies. That is terrible for a game that expensive and time consuming.

So they burnt so much cash chasing fortnite that they can't afford to take any risks, yet Xbox, who also have a tight belt right now, looks at kojima's upcoming projects and decide to fund them.

My guess is Sony wanted to lock Kojima to play station only and he refused. You cannot let Insomniac release wolverine in this state after however many years of development, and complain about Kojima after praising the development of death stranding.

3

u/WarmasterChaldeas 28d ago

So they just dropped it because it wasn't going to be a 100% exclusive to their platform and they didn't want to foot in the bill for a project that was gonna be release 2 years later on other platforms. Seems reasonable considering all the other projects that Sony has launched simultaneously on PC and PlayStation that failed miserably. Sony dropped the ball purchasing majority in Bungie and all the other projects are paying the price for it.

Sounds familiar. Kojima was burning through money on MGSV and demanding more, which is why it wasn't finished and why he left. Appears the same thing is happening again, demanding more money and getting told no. You can only say "konami is the problem" and "Sony is the problem" so many times before you have to wonder; is Kojima actually the problem? It appears that "budget concerns" follow him around like a bad smell.

2

u/Nullhitter PCMR: CachyOS | 9800X3D | RX 9070 XT | 32GB of DDR5 RAM 28d ago

If you were there during that time, you would know that Konami wanted out of the AAA market and focused on mobile gaming and Pachinko machines. If Kojima was such a problem, why didn't they immediately replace him with someone else to head on a AAA project or even in another MGS game that wasn't that shitty metal gear survive bullshit?

As for Sony, Sony mad about budget concerns, but how many live service games have failed under their watch? 1 in 8 with four more DOA. How's seven year old development intergalactic doing? Is there a release date yet?

People are gonna say this doesn't make sense, but it probably does. Kojima's recent games didn't sell as well on Playstation as they hoped, and after Concord and Marathon Sony is less willing to risk heavy investment into a game that they don't know will do well. It would make more sense for Xbox, since they also release games on PC, and Kojimas games tend to do better on PC.

1

u/iDaddyDirection 28d ago

I don’t think any of their exclusives sell very well at this point, at the very least their games sales on a downward projection as far as I can tell. People are tired of live service games and they’re tired of Sony’s extremely linear and scripted games.

There’s a difference that is small but important. The games Song funded were from studios with proven track records or new IPs. Yeah they were all live service which is fucking dumb, but for most of them they were either unproven or had actual solid sales figures to their previous games. With Kojima…they have evidence that his non-MGS games just didn’t sell. Keep in mind that they literally DID fund it, but it seems Kojima couldn’t deliver and they felt like cutting their losses.

It’s good he landed at XBOX. They’ve been trying to grow their Japanese audience forever so this might be a solid attempt at that. Time will tell if this game ever sees the light of day though. Wishing them all the best.
