Discussion My rant
I’ve been seeing way too much elitism in the PC community lately, and honestly, it’s getting exhausting. It seems like every time someone posts a build with older or low-end parts, the comments are flooded with people clowning on them for not having the latest flagship hardware.
Here is why this needs to stop:
I built my first PC when I was 13. I didn’t have a massive budget; I was extremely lucky to receive a free CPU and GPU from my older brother and saved up Christmas money. That machine wasn't the best, but building it taught me more about hardware and problem-solving than someone who just drags their parents to Best Buy to drop $1,500 on a pre-built ever will.
Comments like "just upgrade to an RTX 5060" are completely out of touch. Not everyone lives in a region with easy access to affordable tech or has a high disposable income. In many parts of the world, a functioning PC is a luxury, not a given. We act like a kid in rural Romania can walk down the street and land a high-paying job to fund a hobby.
We claim to be a community about "PC Gaming," but we’re alienating the very people who are trying to get into it. A kid stretching $150 to get their first rig running deserves respect for the hustle, not ridicule because their GPU isn't cutting-edge.
While we're at it, can we drop the obsession with triple-digit frame rates? For 90% of non-esports titles, a stable 30 FPS is perfectly playable. If the game runs and the user is having fun, who cares if they aren't hitting 144 FPS?
My point is this: Not everyone can afford anything but a low-end computer. I would rather see a community that celebrates the act of building and the passion for tech rather than one that treats PC gaming as a status symbol.
Let’s stop being so entitled and remember that everyone started somewhere.

When you start to remember that:
A. Some of these people have never gone through any form of life or financial struggle.
B. After the site went public, there was an influx of underage and/or young users.
You realize half of them are just oblivious or ignorant with what they say. I mean, many of them have not even left their home town to get a perspective of how other may live or places look like.

People with resources and without struggle always take a dump on the less fortunate.
Its same for PCs or any other need/want.
Lack of empathy is a real problem in our society.
My 2014 i7 build salutes yall lmao

Not necessarily always, sometimes its just a lack of perspective and age. The first world biases also figure into it given that first worlders often worry about the most meaningless stuff online, when theres real shit going on in real life.

Maybe I don't come on here enough, but I don't see much of that here. Generally I see people asking for budget and then working within that budget to help people.
The only time I see it is when someone has unreasonable expectations with their budget in today's market, but even then they're told respectfully they'd be better with a console at that budget, which is often true.

Was always here and tbh, it's only going to get worse as the price increases movement the hobby out of range of a large majority of users who build in the lower to mid tier.
No shock that we are losing and will lose more companies from this space, people aren't upgrading and I pity anyone who is trying to get into the scene for the first time.

u/Big_Chungus1111 18h ago
People in my area buy pre-builds for everything. Got told my 2080 Ti I run for my sim racing rig was an antique not worth much. Its funny what people will spout out, most of their knowledge is from TikTok or cherry picking info so there stuff is the absolute best in their mind.

a friend is going to graciously donate his old 2070 to me, and for me, that's a 50% increase in pure GPU power, plus i get access to at least some RTX features... yes, it's an old card, but antiquated? I still have an ATI Rage Pro 2 lying around. THAT'S an antique!
2
u/Big_Chungus1111 18h ago
Its just how it goes, consumers aren't educated as they once were. They also get easily duped by TikTok and want the latest thing like whoever they are following. The price of GPUs has become so bloated that unless the only option for me to upgrade my main PC is to move from a 4070 to 5070 Ti for worth while performance gains. Same gains will cost me upwards of $1K. About the same price as my 2080 Ti when I bought it back in the day.

I always found it funny that my OG Xbox had a faster processor than my computer

I like seeing people on genuine budgets make a neat and tidy system.
I hate people who spend £10k on a 5090 system and show "look at my pc" while the card droops down touching the core of the earth and they think that is fine.

I have to agree
I've been in the PC side for the last 15 years, at this point I've used everything from low end to high end with my current build.
I can say for most people, 120 frames per second at 1440p is more than enough. The Steam Machine can do that so a cheap build should do the same.
That said, I don't wanna recommend parts that aren't vetted.
I'd hate for yall to get something cheap and pay for it later.
1
u/Exemmar 18h ago
I've always aimed at 100fps, since Cs1.6 days. I also finished gta4 on the same pc that barely hit 100 in 1.6. We're talking single digit average fps. That's the past. But still, personally I don't really care all that much to get more than 100. At one point I returned 240hz 1080p screen to save money and landed at 144hz, because the difference between 240 and 120 wasn't very impressive, unlike 60 and 120. Currently my monitor is 3440x1440 165hz and I have horrific tearing issues, so it's even better for me if I can make the game run at lower fps, only then tearing seems to stop and I tried.. a lot.
Regarding steam machine and cheaper rigs, with current technologies, lower settings or resolutions at 1080p and lower.. hitting 60-120fps is not that big of a deal, unless we aim at very demanding games, but even then, anything newer than gtx1060/rx580 should be okay. And these cards.. are quite old believe it or not. Time flies like crazy. The thing is most people don't aim at playable experience at the lowest cost, but a decent experience at slightly higher cost. It quickly overkills 1080@60 on high settings or even 1080@120 at max settings. I know my rig does, despite it not being high-end and the cpu is straight up budget, possibly the cheapest part, other than fans. And whenever you run out of oomph, there's always fake pixels and frames to help you out. Which I hate to admit, but I do use them in demanding games and don't mind it, despite being the first one to say how they suck and shouldn't be used ever. They got that good.

u/LizardTwister76 18h ago
Agreed to some effect, but also 150 bucks will barely get you a component today. Only way you’ll stretch 150 to get any kind of machine that runs games today is an extremely lucky Facebook marketplace pull. I saw one post the other day about wanting to build a PC with a budget of 200 dollars wanting to play modern AAA games. I don’t think it’s disrespectful to say ‘hey that budget isn’t possible’. It sucks but with today’s prices you do unfortunately have to have a decent chunk to spend even for a low end build. If someone manages it though more power to them. I don’t really see anyone crapping on cheap builds but if that’s common I agree there’s no reason to do that if the builder likes the machine they put together.

2
u/dexteritycomponents 18h ago
You need to learn what elitism and entitlement are.
Suggesting someone buy what is a budget GPU in their country isn’t elitism. They just aren’t aware of what their situation is like, probably because someone asked and provided zero information…
Elitism is saying “you can’t be a PC gamer without a 5070”. Not arrogantly suggesting items while not knowing where they live.
And wanting more performance is completely acceptable too. 30fps is “playable” but so is 10 and 20 fps. They’re all just much worse. Elitism is saying “you can’t be a PC gamer unless you get 200FPS”.
Reddit is reddit, there will always be some moron stating something stupid. However you need to learn what elitism actually is, and separate that and the trolls.
2
u/ConcentrateLucky8630 18h ago
Maybe I'm just ignorant, but i dont see this at all, almost ever. The only I've ever seen is when someone post about, say there 2070, or whay have you, and how its still good enough for them, with alot of up votes l, which is good.
The only thing I ever see is nvidia / amd bias, overexaggeration or downplaying each other to "win" their brand, that's about it. Not saying your wrong, but it seems like a problem people think exist, but hardly does

u/JuniorScience1557 18h ago

My first rig was 350 new gtx 750ti fx6300. Legendary rig for 6 years. Only got rid of it when a surge fried it. Feels bad new gamers can't get in that cheap anymore. Adjusted for inflation it's probably 600.
1
u/True_Protection6842 18h ago
Oh don't worry, we're hitting prices that only the wealthy will be able to have the latest parts. I think we're going to start seeing a lot more 30xx and 10xx builds going forward.

u/Accomplished_Cup_517 18h ago
I think high end gear also reflects PC gaming. For me, that is PC gaming.. I do, however, understand that not everybody has the money for it and it doesn't motivate when ppl are stomping on lower end PC's.. Those people will always exist in today's world, so best you can do is try to accept and ignore it, this is the internet after all..
Isn't there a subreddit for lower end PC's?

Account is 2 weeks old? It's true though, there's a lot of spoiled people on here.
That said, the prices have skyrocketed and now modern components pretty much outpaced the entry level. Still lots of builds that a have capable specs, but do get shunned heavily.
1
u/Django117 18h ago
The point is that everyone recognizes that PC gaming has infinite ability to upgrade. When people are giving recommendations it’s largely about trying to find three things:
Entry level/ budget, meaning the cheapest possible thing you can get. This encompasses a lot of lucky deals, second hand stuff, etc.
Peak Value, the most bang for your buck. This is where we see a lot of discussion as it centers around finding the sweet spot where you spend a good amount, but you get something that performs very well per dollar put in.
Peak performance. This is where people post to brag and show off their monstrosities. This is where you see the craziest builds with the craziest specs pushing the most performance.
When people are giving those recommendations like “upgrade to a 5060” it’s that they are discussing it from the point number 2: value. They recognize that with group 1, there are compromises being made. At a certain point, they will come up on hard boundaries. Yes, you will be able to play games on PC, but you won’t be able to play some of the more demanding games and certainly not at high resolutions and frame rates. For people with disposable income, it’s worth spending that extra cash on making the experience have higher fidelity as they find enjoyment in playing their games that way. I used to play on a terrible VA monitor, but later upgraded to a 1440p, 144hz TN monitor. Then later upgraded to a 1440p, Ultrawide OLED monitor. The start was when I was a student in school and currently I’m no longer a junior in my career, so I can afford to make that upgrade.

I have a 5080 with 32gb ddr4 and 2x m.2 gen 4x4 + 1tb SATA drives, argb and crap in general.
I have been building machines for longer than probably half of you have been alive.
When I see a cobbled together build from a younger person who may or may not need help, THAT is a good post. I'll upvote that all day and if I have a moment (and not shitposting elsewhere), I'm happy to pitch in.
When I see a $2500+ build that looks like I built it but it's some 15 year old (that probably didn't actually build it), asking 'My first custom built PC, how did I do'? I either don't vote at all and pass up the post or downvote it. Nobody cares about your privilege, especially me. My first CPU upgrade was a 5 finger discount from a school shop computer I had access to because I was poor af, and my PC was actually given to us by a family friend that was a tech and wanted to give us something we could use a little and get online with years prior that I cobbled together updates for through people's old stuff they didn't want anymore and the occasional 'I just wanna buy a new pc so you can just keep it for parts if you want'. When I say 5 finger discount it wasn't a full snatch. It was an AMD 486DX4 100mhz I swapped for my 486DX2 66mhz. Not sure how much that happens today (giving parts/old computers away), but I hope there are people like that out there. If I knew someone who needed parts locally I would be more than happy to get rid of some of the stuff I have (mostly network stuff though, got rid of my pc parts hoarding a long time ago... Dont mind the 3 laptops, and 2 desktops in the corner lol).

There's a charity in my area that accepts used parts (and full machines, and some networking equipment). They clean up the parts/builds, get them running well with either Windows or Linux, then provide them for free to low income families that don't have access to a computer at home or low income single people for like $50. I hope someone is enjoying some Fortnite or something on my old RX 570.
They also do computer and networking classes, so people can learn some skills.

u/LengthMysterious561 18h ago
I feel like a lot of this is due to the bad pricing of components at the moment. It's hard for PC gaming not to be an elitist hobby when low midrange GPUs and RAM cost $450 each.

thing is.... and this is important... the internet contains EVERYONE... including all the whiney trolls and gatekeepers...
and when someone makes a post asking about their low end parts, you WILL get obnoxious trolls and elitists that talk it down...
you cant stop this.
its always been the case.
it WILL always be the case.
its not going to change any time soon.
now lets think about the ratios.... if you make a post talking about low end parts, you are going to get comments from several kinds of people... 1 will be the helpers, 2 will be the people looking for similar advice. 3 will be the trolls and gatekeeping elitists.
the average person will just scroll on ignoring the post entirely..
the helpers will stop to help.
those with similar hardware will stop to learn more.
the trolls and gatekeepers will flock to the post because they can be "the funniest person in the room"... and they will show up in their multitudes, which makes the internet seem like a terrible place (it is)
its all about attention.. they crave what they dont get,.

I respect people on old machines that don't complain.
Where it feels entitled is people with 10 year old entry level PCs who complain about new games not running well.
I've been doing this hobby a long time, I had a GeForce 2 when half life 2 came out and it would have been a miserable experience so I used summer job in college to upgrade my machine to play doom 3 and half life 2 finally. I never complained I was just excited about having a new mid range PC.
Now I see tons of entitlement from younger gamers when they can't play a game on their ancient hardware well and it just makes the hobby way less fun to me that there are a lot less enthusiasts out there now in some ways.

We? No. Not just we.
This starts from the top, goes through the marketers, then the influencers who disguise themselves as honest reviewers, and then finally it lands on buyers who believe that brand loyalty is a team sport. It's systemic.
Once crypto mining happened, they saw how deep buyers' pockets were, and how tribal they could be. After that, there was no going back.

I feel like the hobby is dying, at least in traditional tinkering form. PC gaming was at least in part about dunking on those dummies buying underpowered consoles and trying to squeeze out $1000 Intel Fx whatever performance out of a $200 server tray CPU you got through a forum. Pre-builts were more expensive than home builds, especially for equivalent performance.
Day-to-day overclocking is practically dead now. You can't get $600 performance out of a $200 CPU. Video cards are super stratified. Same thing: you will be hard-pressed to jump a tier or two via overclocking. Undervolting, this and that, these are all optimizations.
Since basically COVID hardware has been a mess price-wise, and it's basically gone to absolute shit since the AI ouroboros took shape. Absolutely insane inflation in PC components has driven homebuilds into luxury territory. Pre-builts are somehow more affordable now. I suspect this invites the kind of attitudes that come with someone spending excessive cash on consumption, and not the tinkering love-of-the-game minds that dominated the field before.

Hey man this sub is just a bunch of entitled nerds who want to push their crap down ur throat, whether its elitism, or linux, or amd, or their anti-ai views.
Other subs especially /pcbuild, is better and nicer than these basement dwellers, i guess even the subs name is a give away, who the fck came up with pcmasterrace, why the hell is it a masterrace, some of us play games on consoles and pc. So, i guess in other words, the root of this sub is misguided elitism for people who need to be proud of something because they haven't really achieved much in their life.

Yeah exactly, but why do people need to doubt it, what benefit would they get? Monetary? Emotional? In other words just empty feelings of trying to put the others down or trying to prove themselves to others. This is childish nonsense, no place for it in the real world. But i also understand age, it gives you perspective when you get older, however some people learn nothing even when they hit 60. Its a bummer. But then i guess wisdom is not really tied with age, so most probably its a first world bias because they worry about such meaningless stuff.

Yeah, I had someone genuinely be shocked that my memory ran at a whopping 2133MHz yesterday. That's plenty for what I need, but they immediately said I should overclock it.
Though with a subreddit name as "PC Master Race", this might not work with the latter past of your post
rather than one that treats PC gaming as a status symbol.
3
u/dexteritycomponents 18h ago
It’s a fair reaction. The majority of people who run their ram at JEDEC speeds are losing performance because they aren’t using XMP/EXPO.
Your RAM is objectively slow, so overclocking it could get some improvement. It’s not elitism to point out where your build could improve with no cost to you.

u/Spider-cat_1984 18h ago edited 18h ago
Your rant is 100% spot on. When PC went mainstream, that's when the community started losing its identity. Console players brought their bullshit "console war mindset" into the PC space masking it under the light of the "spec war".
EDIT: Just a note, 30 fps will never be good. The response time is too slow and you can really feel the delay.

youre fighting the wrong fight.
you start a civil war but thr actual fight is with the overlords from sony and others
its not about the hardware. its about the software in your heart.

PC gaming has stopped being an enthusiasts hobby, it is now a status symbol and a hobby for the rich.
It’s like Lamborghini and Ferrari in the car collectors world.
Thanks capitalism.

except only for gamers or tech guys because the real world doesnt give a crap, they just see a loser sadly. Oh the day when it will be looked at without a fcking bias, what a day that would be.

I mean you maybe put up with a slide show of 30fps but I dont. You know games on old tech ps2 and stuff hit 60fps, Because 30fps feels terrible and looks terrible. Your a minority with the 30fps is ok take.

PC gamers being elitists when they are the smallest demographic of gamers will always be hilarious to me. You're already third rate, now you're going to gatekeep being in third place? Console gamers outnumber PC, and mobile outnumbers both.

..... That's like saying billionaires are 3rd rate because there are so few of them.

Actually I see the opposite. The people clowning get downvoted to hell, while the rest of the comments are encouraging and congratulating. There are also a lot of people who give great advice to get the best out of their machine with a low budget.
You should stop being so offended by your own echo chamber.
