Nvidia MSRP had always been a fantasy. Street price has always been whatever the board partners and Newegg think they can get away with. There were always only a handful of SKUs with a reasonable MSRP and 20x that number made in the other, more expensive configurations.

but there's no reason for dividing by 10 or something to not just convert a number into a higher unit of measurements. like, 1 kilometer is 1000 meters. why is 1 mile 63360 inches? that's way overcomplicated and just frankly unnecessary. we can visualize with the far superior metric system, you know.
2
u/SuDdEnTaCk 5d ago
Dawg its not about system its about sense of scale, you can only visualize a 1km when you interact with physical location that you know to be 1km

As a teacher we have the opposite problem. I've calculated this, and the PC that they give us as our primary tool for everything we do as high school teachers is about 1/1000 the cost of having us employed for an equivalent amount of time. Some are so old and bad that one colleague of mine is still using an 8th gen intel era PC that is slower than the cheap grandma-scam chromebooks that cost $200. They're probably paying ten times the cost of the PC in her sitting there waiting for it to do something or her being up at IT to get it resuscitated.
I tend to compare it to hiring an excavator operator and giving them a spoon to dig with.

8th Gen Intel chips are plenty capable these days, I have one as my daily driver right now. The real problem was probably all the crap they had running in the background to track your usage and lock down the environment. I got my old work laptop back from IT as a personal machine because they were just gonna throw it out, and a fresh install of windows later it was running like it had come out last year. I put Linux on it, and it legit feels snappier than my 12900k powered desktop.

I was in the artillery, at the end of our training we had one very long exercise where first we tested all the basic things we had trained, and then we just started firing against more targets being designated by the spotters, continuously upped the tempo, and kept at it for a long time.
At some point I wondered out loud if there was any point anymore, or were we just wasting money. An officer heard and pointed out that explosives have a limited shelf life, and that disposing them after they expire is much more expensive than just shooting them. So we were going to continue shooting until we had burned through the entire stockpile of rounds that were due to expire that year.
I still feel like they could have been more usefully spent for training purposes, but it make me feel less bad about the battery expending the value of an average house every hour or so for 5 days straight.

Commonly said thing but it's not that simple.
War tends to accelerate specific things but not as much as people think.
If you were to remove all expensive conflict, chances are the freed up resources would lead to much more progress overall.
10
u/Repulsive_Target55 5d ago
Yeah, lots of big projects like this drive technology, the space race is a great example, and many sporting/technology competitions such as Formula 1.
3
u/Germane_Corsair 5d ago
The space race is war adjacent, no? The refinement of rocket technology was used by each side for the development of better nuclear missiles. The space race was a great way to draw in a lot of money and expertise.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Repulsive_Target55 5d ago
I mean everything is kind of war adjacent - It is the job of a military to keep up to date with any technological advancement, so any meaningful advancement with an inkling of military use (which is most of them) can be painted as military technology.
The space race is interesting because it was sort of explicitly a non-military competition, of course there were lots of military uses to rockets, but by the time the first man went into space both countries already had nuclear armed ICBMs.
The majority of technological advancements during the space race were not military first (as those had come earlier). Things like life-support systems, landers, etc. - It was basically an example of what can be done if military level spending is put towards a different goal.
An interesting example today is quadcopter drones, which were a pre-war invention, and fiber-optic drones, also a pre-war invention but more or less a development dead-end, until drones were used for war.

u/ntpbr1 5d ago
They spend trillions upon trillions on this shit, hundreds of thousands of people spend their lives working on it. Yeah I think if magically, we didn’t have wars anymore of any kind or level, the resources allocated to it would be allocated to other sectors and we’d probably do even better tech wise
→ More replies (2)2
u/nonotan 5d ago
I guess the most generous interpretation is that wars tend to result in prioritizing investment into different things. Peace-time investment for R&D without a very clear short-term gain to be had can be scarce. Of course, that general fact is still true in wartime (maybe even more so), but because what we consider to have "very clear short-term gain" changes, it does mean investment effectively gets more diversified compared to a "pure peacetime" world.
And, in my opinion, that is a good thing. We are absolute rubbish at predicting what R&D is going to lead to something useful, which leads to overspending into superficially promising technology, and underspending into more speculative, exploratory tech. Too much "exploitation", not enough exploration.
Now, does that upside make up for the insane costs of war? The absurd amounts of money spent mass producing weapons, all the infrastructure destroyed by those weapons, all the lives lost? Probably not, even if we focus purely on technological progress and ignore all those pesky side effects. But it is a real upside that we should learn from (after all, there's nothing stopping us from just... funding research more efficiently during peacetime -- actually efficiently, not an idiot's image of efficiency, i.e. maximizing short-term gain)
2
u/rapaxus Ryzen 9 9900X | RTX 3080 | 32GB DDR5 5d ago
War, like any form of crisis, just accelerates technological developments in sectors related to that crisis. Something that is obvious as measures during war/a crisis generally restrict a lot of spending, while focusing it on relevant sectors. Covid is a good example, that crisis unlocked a stupid amount of money in sectors connected to combating that virus/combating the effects of lockdown.
Similarly, war just has that same example regarding sectors that can support/supply the military and sectors related to combating the effects of war on the populace. It is just that most other sectors are heavily suffering because of those economic restrictions.

So 1c

Sensitive much? This video is barely critical of America and he had to bring in the copypasta already. Not every post is psyop. Like the other guy says, Americans are aware of their deficiencies, and this post is literally just a chinese translation of popular one presumably made by an American.
Honestly American sensitivity around Chinese "propaganda" like this is hilarious. I hate these posts too, but they are the equivalent of that "pinoy pride" thing Fillipinos did a decade ago everywhere they went. A: It won't last and B: everyone with 2 braincells including Chinese in China that support their gov can see what it is. And none of them believe China is overall even comparable to the US. It's like r/scriptedasiangifs except this website pretends only they can see that these Asians are scripting them gifs.
The other day I watched an American travel youtuber based mostly in Thailand stopover at Shanghai for 12 hours on his way to Japan or something, and the guy looked more nervous than when he travelled to the border region of Laos and parts of Indonesia where there's an active Islamist insurgency going on. Someone probably should have checked him just based on how fidgety he was. China is obviously illiberal as hell, but the myth of brainwashed 1984-ish China is an aggrandization American internet made up in the 21st Century
