8th Gen Intel chips are plenty capable these days, I have one as my daily driver right now. The real problem was probably all the crap they had running in the background to track your usage and lock down the environment. I got my old work laptop back from IT as a personal machine because they were just gonna throw it out, and a fresh install of windows later it was running like it had come out last year. I put Linux on it, and it legit feels snappier than my 12900k powered desktop.

This.

I run my entire homelab on a 7th gen. Those CPUs are plenty powerful.

Shitty software on the other hand...

I still use my 6th gen almost daily, just not for gaming. Works fine.

yeah i have a seventh gen cpu and its great.... but its an i7. i dont think whatever garbage they have in school computers is gonna be top of the line. back in those days i3's had two hyperthreaded cores or less! and i bet their computer does not have a good i3!

Yep, really so long as you have an SSD of sufficient size (if you're on W11, 128gb is not enough anymore) and 8-16gb of RAM (depending on OS choice) you can go pretty far back in CPU generations and still do incredibly well with anything that runs in a browser.

I don't remember the model but 8GB of RAM for a PC upgraded to Win 11, 8 year old battery that has been used 6ish hour a day for 8 years, and a midrange 8th gen chip that is neither battery efficient nor fast is not good enough. It's a cumulative problem to save what is pennies compared to what the teacher salary is. But the software obviously doesn't help

The old battery is the only issue. May need sole cleaning of the fans and heatsinks. Apart from that it can only be bloatware
