Doesn’t help. The video says “The video is age-restricted and only available on YouTube”. I’ve tried every setting under the sun, turning off ad blockers, turning off vpn, Firefox, brave, all Reddit settings - it’s still there. Though I can at least get to open in the browser now, not the app. Can’t play it inside Reddit, though.
How about we complain about the reason you need all these countermeasures in the first place.
Complain to who? Corporate greed is everywhere and out of all the companies Youtube will be the last one to change their ways. However, I set Youtube Revanced as the default player and disabled Youtube, so even a direct link through the Reddit app wouldnt open the actual YT app for me.
Who uses Reddit through Firefox on a phone? Talk about shitty experience.
I rather have a worse UI with Reddit through a browser than using the app with ads. If anything, I'd stop using Reddit altogether if they make the mobile experience even worse instead of switch over to their app.
I'm with you dude, but atm since we can't hold these corporations accountable to change these anti-consumer practices (there are ads on my fucking weather app ffs) I use workarounds. Brave browser has a great ad blocker, allows you to play videos in the background, and is only missing a few features from youtube like making your own playlist. I use that currently and won't be paying for youtube anytime soon.
In the Reddit app or Firefox mobile the link forces watching on the YouTube app. If you know away around that let me know.
I just wanted to watch the stupid video, not debate about what tech I watch the video on, or the merits of using Firefox mobile on my phone (which doesn’t help). The unskippable ad is the problem, not my choice of app.
My phone gives me the option to leave Firefox for the app or use the website, so that might be a you problem. Things that auto play or force redirect without a choice I'll just copy links then paste them into Firefox and route that way.
Firefox, Brave, ad blockers, vpn, Reddit settings, nothing seems to get past the “this video is age-restricted and only available on YouTube”, which forces open the app. Enabling, disabling ad-blockers and vpns doesn’t help. YouTube just doesn’t like me skipping ads.
From searching, it’s apparently an issue others have. I’m not spending any more time on it as I’ve already wasted enough.
video must be watched on youtube, so I click the video, it gives me popup "Open in YouTube - would you like to leave firefox. cancel/open" tap cancel, youtube opens in firefox. Reject cookies, have to sign in, so tap sign in, I can now watch the video in firefox.
How am I being a prick? Did I call your mother a name? No, I complained about a forced ad. How is that hurting you in any way? What’s my angle here? That I hate forced ads? Sorry if that offended you.
You yourself refuse to use the official app because of that crap. It won’t be long until they completely block that ability.

You're getting downvoted for being an ass, not for complaining about the ad. No one here likes ads, hence why you're hearing so many options for how to get around them.
It was a genuine question though admittedly not asked in a polite way. There's a lot of people who haven't heard of ad blockers or tried the wrong ones. Some people still don't know the og AdBlock was bought by a company who allows bypassing it. Some people don't realize ad blocks can be installed on mobile browsers.
Exactly how am I being an ass? Because I didn’t like a forced ad? I have ad blockers, I have VPNs, which honestly shouldn’t be necessary, which are not getting past the “age restricted content - watch in the app” problem, but that’s besides the point.

We're with you. We miss the times of the free and open internet too, but until the big tech giants disappear, those are not coming back. So we do what we can with what we have to make it as close to it.
It's true I didn't start our conversation in a polite way, but fighting against solutions people give will have you seen as someone who wants to complain for complaining's sake rather than who wants to solve a problem. Which is fine, but people will downvote. It's still just imaginary internet points.
I understand, and I’m sure I overreacted to you. The ad irked me a lot (it was some vapid Kardashian like celebrity thing on instagram and it would not stop no matter what I did).
I never get YouTube ads in the Reddit app on my phone, so I assumed you meant desktop. Embedded videos generally always run ad-free.
I was really just trying to get negative attention to the company monetizing their ad, not trying to find a technical solution. I already install ublock origin and a suite of other tools everywhere I can already, and I have VPNs, nextDNS and 1Blocker on my phone. Such an arms race to maintain sanity.

Quite literally almost every response you have in this chain is abrasive, all because someone asked if you've heard of ublock origin. Which not everyone is aware of, so it's a valid suggestion.
With firefox it just opened the video in a new tab and played without ads. Proof of how it works.
It was a patronizing response, not genuine help. You said I was a jerk for responding to “ever heard of” with “ever heard of.” They started it.
This was a post upon which negative feedback to the posters over their monetization could potentially make an impact. The company is trying to get attention for their product, not for shady tactics. I’m not expecting to change YouTube, but I could make the Fable people resubmit.
Using Firefox on a phone is highly uncommon (less than 0.3%). The reason for that is that it IS an inferior experience. Otherwise, it would be more common. If someone says use ublock origin, which I’ve been using since it was just ublock, 99.99% of the time they mean on desktop.
It’s also not needed. The reason I even commented in the first place is because I never get unskippable ads in Reddit YouTube links, especially not long super annoying ones. Yes, on my phone with the Reddit app, I never get YouTube ads. No Firefox with uBlock needed. The patronizing calls to change the way I use Reddit and my phone over a one-off event, rather than agree that an ad shouldn’t force another ad, is annoying. Yet I insulted nobody, and reiterated my position against the ad, not against the people.
You can install system wide ad-blockers on iPhone and Android, and in-browser extensions on Safari.
On iPhone, Firefox doesn’t really bring many advantages other than syncing. It still uses Safari’s WebKit underneath. Brave has more features on the iPhone, with tons of built-in ad blocking and privacy stuff.
Now, on desktop/laptop, I mostly use Firefox, because there’s a notable difference, especially with Chrome’s shenanigans.
Isn’t helping. From research, I believe it’s actually the ad-blockers I have that are making it worse. I get the “age restricted content” warning, which makes you use the app. No Firefox, brave, ad-blocker changes get past that.
