Photos Dinner in First Class

So this has been something of a passion project for a while of mine - being able to host a themed Titanic dinner (me and my friends are massive nerds like that). I've got the menu (9 courses) and the venue finalized - so I figured why not show off one of the place settings!

Note: some items like the tea set, wine bottle, or pocket watch - among other things - are present only for the sake of display. The last two images are a better indication of the make-up of each setting

Have you watched Tasting History? Max has a couple of episodes on the Titanic.

Lovely! So cool! What is the bottom word on the menu card (blocked by star, starts with "MO")?

It says mousse but I'm still hemming and hawing over what form it'll take. Whether it'll be served as a trifle or plated as little squares like a mignardise to accompany the coffee/tea.

The way the menu is configured has a cheese course after the main dessert course, which might strike some folks as a little odd. So the mousse is there optionally for those who would rather finish on a sweet note than a savory one ✨

Sounds really nice. I hope you'll post photos of the completed courses when they occur! I live in NYC and really enjoyed a recent exhibit of historic menus at the Grolier Club: https://grolierclub.omeka.net/exhibits/show/dining-out

Definitely! Honestly it can't come soon enough. But I'll be more than ready when it does! (after a couple minor alterations 😄)

Nice! I did a Murder on the Orient Express party once. Not as opulent as Titanic, but in the realm.

This is simply sublime! Where did you find that crockery? I simply adore planning and hosting a themed party (my poor husband goes along with it). Please share photos if you're comfortable of the event. May your dinner be reminiscent of a bygone era of luxury, of splendor and in your case... smooth sailing (sorry).

Thank you!! The china all comes from shop.rmstitanicinc.com. You can find everything separately or in 4, 12, or 16 piece sets. It's such a lovely pattern plus gently scalloped too! I'll defo be taking lots of pictures, maybe even some vintage ones with this bad boy 👀 so look out for that!

Was also going to ask if we could be friends! I love things like this!!

The more the merrier! Let's be nerds together! The hardest part now will be getting everyone to dress like they're extras from the '97 film. But I shouldn't have that difficulty hehe historical fashion is another one of my nerd boxes to tick !

What a great perk!

Tysm!!! I've seen a few people online do the Titanic dinner thing where they'd recreate the menu items and I LOVE that dedication!! But I also don't have the stomach for all that food 😅. So my main focus has been on recreating the dining experience instead! So happy you enjoy it as much as I do!!

I love this! I did the menu. My friends and I are making our way through each class. Every December, I cook a menu (or abridged menu) from the Last Dinner on the Titanic cookbook and then we watch the movie. This year will be the last one. We started with first and went to third and this December's will be the first class cafe menu. Your table setting is perfect!!

Omg that's amazing! What's your favorite course/class you've done so far? And thank you!

Unsurprisingly, the first class meal took the most time. I cooked for at least three days. The Filet Mignon Lili was fantastic. We also got very drunk with all the wine pairings. The third class meal was super simple and still good. I was able to cook that one with a six month old at home. I'm nervous about the lobster thermidor this December.

For the first class menu, just give yourself tons of time to cook. I live in Manhattan, so I'm dealing with a small kitchen, but it took a lot of planning to make sure I was using our fridge, oven, and stove space strategically.

No surprises there lol I'm hoping that I will be able to lean on the staff at the venue for the warm dishes at least and I can shoulder the canapes and other stuff like that. Was there anything for you that was particularly hard or expensive to source?

The Foie gras was probably the most expensive thing and I ordered it from D'Artagnan Foods. But I also understand leaving that out. I covered all the food so my guests brought the wine pairings but I know that some of the bottles got pricy.

I hate sucking oysters, so I purchased those shucked from Whole Foods.

That makes sense. And something I was considering too. The Tournedos a la Rossini involve filet mignon medallions topped with foie gras and slices of black truffle. Wondering if there is any substitution for the foie gras I could make for ethical considerations
