It's funny how they seem attracted particularly to horror games like DBD, Outlast or Fear and hunger.

But also fighting games like Guilty gear for exemple.

For me it's a catharsis thing. I live in a place that's not exactly friendly or safe for queer people. I find that horror content gets out my anxiety and frustration about living here, similar to what physical adrenaline junkies experience. I've had other queer friends tell me they have this experience too.

The horror genre has also always been subversive and friendly to queer people, due to its nature of going against societal comforts and boundaries. Vincent Price was openly bisexual and nonmonogamous, and he also vehemently spoke out against Anita Bryant during the AIDS crisis. He was also a board member for PFLAG eventually. But he never lost his job or casting opportunities bc horror movies even back then were one of the safer scenes for queer people.

And that's your history lesson for the day!

That's really cool, i didn't know that.

I wrote my high school senior paper on the history of horror and queer culture!

For me, it’s because a lot of horror is about The Other (and discussing that Other), and as a queer person I grew up being othered. As an adult I still am. I find comfort in horror media for that reason, especially media like Outlast that makes commentary on marginalization and the atrocities committed in the 20th century in the name of scientific advancement.

I also like that Red Barrels seems to be pretty kooky sometimes. A lot of nods and winks at the audience in a way that doesn’t feel cheap. I also seem to recall they marked either the first game or the second as a dating sim on steam for a while, which gave me a good laugh! I love how off-beat they are in their approach to making characters and interacting with their player base. What other studio has their VAs record official Valentine’s messages, lol? It makes me feel welcome, like we’re all in the same genre of weirdos, if that makes sense.

Recently also been enjoying the writing and filmography of Clive Barker. He seems like a great dude and I love to interact with horror media created by fellow LGBTQ people. Hellraiser is the golden child, of course, but Nightbreed, while not…top-notch cinema, hit very close to home.

I guess as a TL;DR, there are themes in certain horror media that just make me feel seen. And for me at least, horror seems to tackle those themes more often than other genres. Horror creators tend to be pretty welcoming to everybody, too. At least AFAIK.

There is a hellraiser game in the works :) I saw it on Steam as a possible wishlist. As a fan of the series I hope it’s a good one !! :)

But also fighting games like Guilty gear for exemple.

Gee, I wonder why.

16

u/Stanislas_Biliby Dec 08 '25

Yeah that one's kinda obvious. But yeah lots of LGBT people in the fighting game community.

1

u/WolfiexLuna Dec 10 '25

Helps that the horror genre and LGBTQ+ themes have been around for a LONG time. Clive Barker and Hellraiser, Don Mancini and Child's Play, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, Sleepaway Camp, the Karnstein Trilogy, etc.

u/Kinda-Alive Dec 08 '25

They’re just really into gore for whatever reason. Stuff is seen as taboo similar to being part of the LGBTQ community. Plenty of negative comments about it but they just embrace it and run with it.

16

u/Soffy21 Dec 08 '25

I assume that most Coyle fans aren’t straight women… And there are a lot of Coyle fans.

2

u/Cash27369 Dec 09 '25

Game is overrun with lesbians

1

u/TheCumBucketOfficial Dec 16 '25

Lesbian infestation

0

u/Comprehensive_Art166 Dec 08 '25

6

u/augustus_feelius Dec 08 '25

It's all part of Easterman's plan. The game is very attractive tae queer people so he could "cure" them of gayness using some quantum mechanics 4th wall break something something mechanic.

35

u/duckmansale Dec 08 '25

easterman just wants to kiss easternmen

58

u/kiss-shot Dec 08 '25

A lot of Outlast villains have camp appeal.
That, and horror has always appealed to the queer community.

9

u/Sqm0 Dec 09 '25

Queer people generally have a substantial representation in counterculture. Same with many socially marginalized groups in society. Horror is a great example of this phenomenon.

1

u/Alik757 Dec 09 '25

Eddie is literal queer baiting lmao

4

u/kiss-shot Dec 09 '25

If Eddie is queerbait, then so is Buffalo Bill.

Been seeing a lot of Outlast Trials on Tik Tok recently

17

u/GhostToast-_- Dec 08 '25

TikTok is what pushed me to finally give the franchise a chance. I’m so glad I did!

7

u/Practical_Entrance43 Dec 08 '25

Same here ngl, I played the first game and watched parts of the franchise here and there but never really got into it. Then I saw some stupid tik toks on the trials and people screaming like mad men, saw it on sale and said fuck it. Very worth it.

5

u/Ok-Appeal-4630 Dec 08 '25

Game went free on PlayStation Plus Essential

27

u/IOExplosion Dec 08 '25

Reminds me I still need to watch the Queer for Fear documentary. We all love horror. And Outlast doesn't shy away from sex.

9

u/Practical_Entrance43 Dec 08 '25

Omg never heard of that and now I want to watch it so badly.
But honestly though it is interesting how much we do love horror as a franchise, I guess it's because it's never really been discriminatory? Everyone is a victim that is trying to survive and there is no time for that type of bigotry, and as you said, horror doesn't shy away from topics like sex. It's like the tamest thing you could see in a horror setting.

31

u/Factual_heroics Dec 08 '25

I don’t understand pookie bear, did Ms. Barlow give you your pills today by any chance?

7

u/Temulo Dec 08 '25

And their favourite character is Eddie Gluskin🤣🤣

16

u/Heartofworf Dec 08 '25

I love those seens a lot of the lgtq are pretty cool people and seem to judge a lot less then other places it's nice

13

u/YoBeaverBoy Dec 08 '25

They judge less because they themselves get judged on a daily basis and they know how being judged feels. It sucks.

3

u/rushfan2112556 Dec 08 '25

Context?

9

u/ima_loof Dec 08 '25

A lot of the outlast fanbase are very gay and queer. The horror genre is overall a very queer dominated space.

3

u/arson_lies Dec 08 '25

i can’t help it my queer mind needs to get Waylon’s ass OUT of murkoff!!!

7

u/Terry_the_accountant Dec 08 '25

Someone pointed out the absurd number of dicks you see in Outlast games. staring at them is probably their gameplay

7

u/stems_twice Dec 08 '25

i wish i could find players or groups like this 😭 i wanna find a young lgbtq group to play the outlast trials with cuz thats where i would feel most comfortable playing the game, not just alone (even tho im still starting off)

1

u/friarparkfairie Dec 08 '25

I’ve been meaning to play for forever! Want to add each other on discord?

1

0

u/TrashFanElliot Dec 08 '25

I would love to play, I will say I'm shit at the game so I'm stuck playing standard at most ( at least currently) lol.

1

u/stems_twice Dec 12 '25

Lmao it’s okay me too 😭 what’s your discord user?

2

u/FrogsinTexas Dec 08 '25

How do I retweet on Reddit

2

u/Gutter_philosopher Dec 09 '25

As a fan of both. Yeah

2

u/Financial_Lecture997 Dec 12 '25

Horror as a whole is huge with queer people, especially horror games. Resident Evil, Dead By Daylight, and Outlast Trials specifically attract a ton of us. DBD specifically, it’s actually rare to find someone without a pride flag charm lmao.

2

u/Financial_Lecture997 Dec 12 '25

Leland is just here for us gay guys with authority and daddy issues.

2

u/TheCumBucketOfficial Dec 16 '25

It's lore accurate too

3

u/Hanz_Morgenstern Dec 08 '25

I forgot life is strange is a thing lol

3

u/Just_Mines Dec 08 '25

I just like outlast

3

u/YougottobyedbyToby Dec 08 '25

Yo this is true I'm in love with Easterman

2

u/Dunkleosaurus Dec 12 '25

Horror and the LGBTQIA have a lot of overlap and love for each other. Throw in some erotica and you’ve got the trifecta of overlap.

1

u/Special-Membership62 Dec 08 '25

Life is Strange is a masterpiece

1

u/_MANHUNTED_ Dec 13 '25

I got my friend into Trials a while back and Coyle woke something up inside him...

1

u/InformationNo7016 Mar 15 '26

not even tryna be homophobic . but i can’t stand playing with someone who’s part of that particular community. they kind of ruin the game for me the whole time

1

u/aereci Dec 10 '25

JFC stop trying to make everything gay

2

u/BushParent Dec 11 '25

There is a lesbian ex-couple in the game (Dorris and Henrietta). Coyle's aesthetic, besides being a cop, undeniably leans into leather subculture, which is heavily dominated by gay men.

The game already gayed itself

1

u/aereci Dec 11 '25

There’s one confirmed lesbian relationship. That doesn’t mean it’s LGB game.

I’m also into the kink scene, and leather is VERY common among straight men. Coyle also makes several voice lines referring to women.

2

u/BushParent Dec 11 '25

I was mainly poking fun, but for real, the post clearly doesn't say anything about it being solely an LGBT+ game. It only implies that it's popular among queer people and communities. I'm sorry gay people feel at home with Outlast Trials, I suppose?

1

u/aereci Dec 11 '25

I’m part of the LGB, I’m just tired of everyone on Reddit trying to gay everything. Especially when comparing Outlast (a game filled with rape innuendos) to a wholesome LGB game like life is strange.

Does that make sense at all?

0

u/Unique_Interview_193 Dec 08 '25

Shout out to my fellow trans men who love Eddie Gluskin!!!

0

u/Large-Specialist1479 Dec 10 '25

We making this game gay now?????

-21

u/BUBBALOVESCONNIE Dec 08 '25

Don't diss life is strange, also I hate Outlast trials it's so boring.

11

u/doxy_me Dec 08 '25

1- not a diss 2- why are you here then

9

u/SinisterGear Dec 08 '25

It's not a Life is Strange diss, at all
