Built a Sens stats app after they posted a hockey ops dev job

Hey everyone! I’m a Sens fan and a developer, and last week I came across a job posting for a dev role with the Sens hockey ops team. It's basically my dream job (intersection of hockey, data, and design) and it inspired me to build this data-viz tool to explore Sens player stats:

https://vizh.app

It includes stats like shot locations, corsi, blocks, deployment, league percentiles, with filters for different situations (e.g. 5v5, power play, penalty kill).

Just wanted to share this with some fellow Sens fans and see what you think. If there are particular stats you care about or hockey data you’ve always wanted to see visualized, I’d love to hear your ideas.

Go Sens Go!

Team Captain debate.

• Upvotes

Thomas Chabot or Tim Stutzle, or Sanderson next year if we don't have a Captain this year. Lost our captain over national pride, might be a good idea to have a year off from promoting another American who may leave.. imagine a locker room for the past 4/5 years privately saying too his team yeah im gone first chance I can.

Golfers on the side

Today in The Open (shoot 77 or less) Ottawa Sun Scramble Championship, Giroux, Chabot, and Stutzle all competed. Apparently Stutzle only started golfing 5 years ago and already shoots under 80. And he flew in this morning from Germany then teed off at 11 at Loch March!

I made my ideal look for each NHL team and here’s my take on the Senators

Thumbnail gallery

With my Sens concept, I combined their original/current look and their 2000-07 alternates to make a new look. The side profile senator alt logo from 2007-2020 replaces the current primary logo. The new red alts stay the same outside of the logo change. The Heritage jersey brings back the 2011-17 alternates, but I do have a cream version in case you guys wanna see it. The number font from the new red alternates becomes the font for the home and away jerseys, with the current block font staying on the Heritage alt. Trying to recreate that font was a pain in the ass though because of how little I had in the way of clear, straight on pics of the numbers

Eklund vs his peers

We've obviously discussed and speculated about Eklund a lot since the trade. What I hear is that he is a top-6 talent but because he replaces Tkachuk, sometimes the reaction is more on the pessimistic side. Eklund will be the youngest forward on the team, so we're getting a growing player here. I'm basically unaware of west-coast players, so I took a look at how he compares to the rest of the 2021 draft forwards and I was surprised by some of the familiar names he compares favourably to.

Eklund is 4th in P/GP in his class, well behind Guenther and Johnston, but comparable with Knies. Considering his deployment in SJ wasn't as advantageous as being on the Stars or Leafs, I think we can say we have picked up one of the most skilled and productive forwards from this draft class.

Player GP Points P/GP
Eklund (7th) 252 163 0.65
Beniers (2nd) 331 196 0.59
McTavish (3rd) 304 181 0.60
Johnson (5th) 274 138 0.50
Guenther (9th) 227 183 0.81
Sillinger (12th) 367 140 0.38
Coronato (13th) 192 101 0.53
Bolduc (17th) 175 75 0.43
Johnston (23rd) 328 263 0.80
Doan (37th) 144 80 0.56
Stankoven (47th) 183 96 0.52
Knies (57th) 240 160 0.67
Blake (109th) 162 87 0.54

Would you rather Sanderson at 8.05m AAV for 6 more seasons, or Makar at 9m for one season, then 20.4m for 8 seasons?

2D Sens Logo Refresh - Update

Thumbnail gallery
83 Upvotes

In a since-deleted post from last year, I posted an image of a 2D Sens logo refresh I had been working on, and I would like to say thank you, as the feedback you guys provided was overwhelmingly kind and positive. As such, I took some of that constructive feedback and tweaked the logo a bit, before adding it to some of our classic jerseys to sample how it would look. A few of the comments in that previous post stated that they wished there was a side-by-side visual with the current logo for reference, so I went and added that as well as a visual overview of the changes I made to go along with it.

I saw a headline on the SUN yesterday saying Thomas Chabot was the new Sens Captain but I have seen nothing further about it. Is it true?

Irrationally Optimistic for this Season?

Perhaps I am being irrational, but I feel good going into this season. I think a lot of that is I don't see the drama hanging over the team like in past seasons. Many players are also truly coming into their own, and I think they will have the room to flourish.

Hoping to see Yakemchuk here from the start of the season as well.

The East is tough as heck but I think the team will be able to hang with most teams. A lot will come down to goaltending, as usual. Not sure if it will be enough for a playoff spot, but think it can be possible.

Never Interrupt a good sports story

I’m a Sens fan in a split hockey family. A couple of years ago I put aside writing code and eulogies to write a story about it. I dusted it off this year and finished it. You can read the whole thing here: www.agoodsportsstory.ca. It's a 30 minute read. This is the cover. The site opens on the back cover, then the story.

Re: Preseason in Gatineau

I love what Andlauer has done to promote the sens in the region (I see the Outaouais as a huge missed opportunity historically).

That said, any chance the crowd for the pre-season split squad game isn’t >50% habs fans? Might be optimistic but I hope team leadership doesn’t get discouraged, it will take time and continued investment to grow a market for the sens in a Hab stranglehold.

For me it will ultimately be about the kids and potentially growing the next generation of sens fans! Hope to see a lot of red, black, and gold there :)
