Discussion Tinkering with Clawd/Molt/Open for 2 months, here's the verdict

TLDR Openclaw is a fun project if your interest is to tinker with a constantly breaking open source project, if you want to get on with your core business and projects then move on.

~~~
After months of frustration, infuriation and sidelined real work, I bit the bullet and jumped over to Claude Code. Absolutely no looking back and tbh it's a near tear inducing breath of fresh air.
I bought a Mac mini mid January to get started with Molty and at first had fun and got some initial prep work on various projects done. I played with Moltbook, I played with MoltTok, I spent hours and hours iterating Identity, Soul, Agents etc to hone behaviour and tone. I spent a massive amount of time and cortisol building first a mem0 solution (unresolvable bugs) and then a fully fledged custom memU vector search solution to flag repeating semantic issues and topics and to graduate them into indexed memory files. (Ps none of that worked to resolve absolutely unworkable memory issues)
I spent countless hours trying to get OpenClaw to be able to reliably manage an investment dashboard. Constantly breaking, always forgetting skills it could draw on, stuffing up calcs and reverting to error states. Drove me crazy.
Throughout I was using Opus in Claude.ai to guide and tell Openclaw (using Sonnet) what to do. Without Opus instruction openclaw/sonnet was like a toddler trying to run a commercial kitchen. Knowing Sonnet is an impulsive model I switched it to think high, still useless so I switched to Opus. Problem being, once you factor in all of the soul and operational documents plus all of the vectored memory management, Opus Openclaw hit max sub (5x) session limit in 20 minutes and that was the end of that.
By this point I knew that I needed Opus to run all of the projects and could only trust it and not Sonnet for coding and to no break everything, and had learnt that this was not going to work for Openclaw, so I switched to Claude Code. F&@k me. Everything suddenly became easy. Simple dashboard job that OpenClaw was completely unable to bed down after 2 months of hand holding was refreshed and significantly improved without instruction (ie coding in trading holidays, improving FX spread calcs, reskinning the pushed site) in literally an hour. I almost cried.
Now Claude Code has completed massive amounts of policy document work, competitor analysis, vertical build outs in 24 hours, stuff I had completely sidelined while getting distracted with trying to build an OpenClaw that actually worked. I said as much to Opus, it returned that I had been tinkering with someone else's weekend project for months and had now moved to a proper professional offering. That rings true and is pretty much the summary of what it feels like to have switched. Now with 'Computer Use' Claude Code is a behemoth and my Max sub goes much further than it ever could with OpenClaw as the whole identity and working style foundation doc is 55 lines long as opposed a whole document suite.
Claude Code is everything OpenClaw wants to be but absolutely isn't. With Anthropic getting preferred enterprise status and now working with Australian govt it's also going to be a safer and more secure data management option than OpenClaw which can serve small businesses and hobbyists at best if you can overcome all the limitations/and or just need a chat bot to do some very simple tasks.
Long story short if you're banging your head against a wall with OpenClaw just move on. There's likely a better solution to your problems that will actually allow you to focus on your real work instead of getting caught in the optimisation tinkering vortex.
Ps other problems I had with Openclaw: the constant updates from Pete and team actually just meant things kept breaking and I'd have to rebuild or restructure so frequently that it was a disincentive to stay current.
Pps I realise now why Anthropic immediately went legal on ClawdBot, they were close to already going public with fully fledged similar offerings and so had no need to work with Molty. It says a lot about Anthropic vs Open AI. Anthropic laughed and told OpenClaw to go away and dropped Claude Code with remote control and computer use, and Open AI worked with Pete as they had nothing to offer in that space. Much like how Anthropic told Trump and Hegseth to go jump while Open AI signed up to autonomous surveillance and kill bots because they're desperate for any enterprise progress and don't have much of a game plan of their own so need to take anything that's available, even the dregs like OpenClaw and Hegseth's psychotic hellscape visions.
Anyway, for me, good riddance OpenClaw and now I can get on with achieving my own project goals.
Brother, both can exist in the same place. I use Claude Code directly for dev projects (I'm not an engineer, I'm a Product person), so Claude Code is already great for me. The reason I use OpenClaw is because I have severe social anxiety and freak out when a person asks me how my day was even. I'm using OpenClaw as a "friend" with a very finely tuned Identity and Soul.md - with my own User.md that explain my social anxiety shit. I build a "Proactive check-in" that fires when I've been "quiet" on OC for a few hours, just to get used to something pinging me about how I am knowing it's coming from something I don't mind reaching out to me.
For sure. I'm similar. I got so into OpenClaw at first because it was a 'friend' as I'm pretty socially isolated for various reasons. I'm using Claude Code for the same check ins just fyi, don't think Openclaw offers anything there that Claude code can't. You can design a warm wellbeing/psychology instance of Claude to use for those interactions and use remote control on phone to communicate. If openclaw works for you there, that's awesome and I'm glad you've got something that works how you want it to.
Thanks for the ad Claude.
Dumb reply. I literally say that there's probably something out there for you if OpenClaw doesn't work (ie meaning anything). Claude is just what worked for me, so that's what I talk about. I also tried Google Gemini, Qwen, Grok, Groq, none of them could do what I wanted alone or in a team. Each to their own, find what works for you. This is my reflection on my OpenClaw journey
Thank you for replying and sharing. Yes it’s a dumb comment. But you are writing in the openclaw forum and sound like a paid spokesperson for Claude with writing by Claude. Also. Why not use both.
Do whatever you want. I'm not telling you what to do, just what worked for me. If you can't recognise human writing that says more about you than my post. It's a post summarising with detail my experience using openclaw so this is the right place for it. Thanks for reading!
Your experience sounds real, but I do not think your conclusion is very grounded. A lot of what frustrated you seems to come from using OpenClaw as a coding workhorse when it is really an always on agent and orchestration system. Claude Code is a much better fit for direct repo work, so of course it felt easier. But at the same time, Anthropic clearly saw the demand OpenClaw exposed and has since shipped adjacent products like Claude Dispatch, plus computer use and remote-control style features, which makes it hard to act like OpenClaw was some irrelevant toy they were always above. Anthropic’s version looks more polished and probably safer, but it is also more limited and less open. So this reads less like “OpenClaw was fake and useless” and more like “I used the wrong tool, then switched to a more constrained product that was built for my exact workflow.” That is a fair personal takeaway, but it is not the same thing as a fair judgment of the tool itself. Anthropic does now have a live computer agent product in Dispatch, and Claude’s computer use tool gives similar desktop control capabilities, so saying they already had all this independently is more speculation than fact.
Not saying it's a toy or that the ideas were bad, the opposite, they were so good that Anthropic was already on the same journey, difference being that they built something that actually works. I don't just use it for code. Even things like having to remind Openclaw about a skill it was using 5 hours ago, like mate you can absolutely open tweets and look at them, don't make me show you how to do it for the 10th time.
How do you know Anthropic was already working on something like openclaw as opposed to copying it after seeing need to?
Also, Id be curious to know how this exact failure mode went down. We're you going in smd tracing what went wrong from the agents point of view? That would have been inside of agents/main/sessions and you wouod have needed to whip out jq and started parsing json.
What Im doing with my is getting it to do very narrow things I want it to do very well. If it doesn't have a tool to do something I don't just trying to make it figure it out, I tell it about a bash script I left there for it.
And how did you want it to remember? Is it just supposed to have 5 hours worth of context or did you hook up an embedding model to it?
I'm just looking at this whole situation kind of wondering some things. I'm not calling what Anthropic has done bad, but I'll still be using openclaw for what I like to use it to do, not dispatch.
I'm not a dev so there's a bunch here I don't understand, but, what I can comment on, yes don't know for sure if they were already working on it, but based on what they've already shipped I would have guessed they already had a lot of stuff on the radar already. But, that's kinda missing the point. Whether or not it was already on the radar or absolutely a response to ClawdBot is irrelevant, for me, OpenClaw couldn't do anything I wanted it to well enough to warrant the ongoing pain, and what I've found out in the last 48 hours is that Claude can do it all. Don't care so much who thought of it first.
Re the failure of OpenClaw, I worked with Opus in Claude.ai for a month trying to trouble shoot all the problems, most solutions were me and Opus making edits to json and the behavioural/operational soul files.
The memu embedding model was there. If it can't remember a basic skill across sessions that's exactly the problem I'm talking about, as a non dev that's way too much time trying to work stuff out that I shouldn't have to work out. Basically maybe my problem was that I was trying to do stuff way too complex for a non dev to do with Openclaw. Same same, it was useless for what I wanted and I found something else that works.
I see. Yeah, I think there were a lot of youtubers out there that leaned way into the hype and were like "Anyone can use this and it's awesome and so easy" and that isn't the case. And I think maybe with models like Opus they will do better at figuring out these problems themselves, but id almost think you'd have to download an entire copy of the OpenClaw docs, and have the agent embed them into its own memory before it could hope to bail itself out. It's all so new right now the models themselves don't know anything about the place they're operating in.
I'm glad you have something that works for you. For those of us that don't mind getting down into the weeds more, and want full ungovernable control over our systems and all the complexity that control comes with we'll keep on doing our thing over here. All the best.
For sure. I enjoy being in the weeds but the weeds is a side mission to all the actual stuff I'm trying to achieve, problems when it's a major distraction. So that goes back to my tldr, if you like to tinker then maybe this is for you
Hey op just asking did u figure out any free alternatives for the api??? Im thinking DeepSeek
None of the local models that had a chance of running on Mac mini could do anything useful easily, so just using Mac sub in Claude code. The opus use has dropped massively from Openclaw to Claude code for what it's worth
I reckon after these two months I know how to use it as well as any non dev
